Basically, I know my card is connected to something, because firefox can do a google search, but I'm not sure what network it is connected to, since there are a couple open networks in my apt complex. Is there a command to list the ssid? that I'm connect to? and, I'm new to all this so I'm not sure if ssid is the correct term. I have a consumer grade netgear wireless "router" that I bought from bestbuy which has a "passphrase".

I have a desktop machine with two ethernet interfaces, eth0 and eth1. Etho is connected to the cable modem and that seems to be working fine - well, I'm posting here, right? Eth1 is connected to a Linksys WAP54G wireless access point. I have eth1 set to 192.168.1.240 and the AP set to 192.168.1.245 (the default). The desktop runs CentOS and I have dhcpd running, and I have focused on the dhcpd.conf file, which I have changed many times. Here is the latest incarnation:

So theres this project I'm going to try working on during my free time and part of it includes using a wireless NIC as an access point. The way I see it, if a wireless NIC can send and receive wireless signals to a wireless router/WAP, why can't it be treated like one as a router/WAP? A router is a specialized computer after all.From what I heard this idea is possible but I'm having trouble finding results, since search engines don't know exactly what I'm talking about. Does anybody have any idea how I can accomplish this?

My wireless is 'almost' working, but frustratingly not quite there. Debian Testing (squeeze). I have two different wireless adapters. Both work flawlessly from an ubuntu live CD in the same machine, connecting to the same unencrypted access point so the problem is not faulty hardware, weak signal, overpowering signal, interference from other AP's, MAC filtering, or anything to do with WPA.
I have loaded the correct (I think) firmware packages for both adapters. dmesg is not complaining about missing or incompatible firmware. I have googled the various error messages reported in dmesg and found that the /etc/Wireless/RT2860STA/RT2860STA.dat missing config file is normal. I could not find anything that I understood concerning the BSS returned, data->length messages but since I see the same thing in Ubuntu (where the wireless is working flawlessly) I assume they are also normal and not related to the problem.
Both adapters can see all the available access points (using iwlist {iface} scan or using gui tools such as wicd, wifi-radar) NEITHER adapter will associate with any access point (and I've tried three different unencrypted AP's so far). I can connect to all/any of these AP's from an ubuntu live CD using the exact same hardware, so this is NOTHING to do with MAC filtering, etc... using 'iwconfig {iface} essid' as root to set the essid "appears" to work, but simple does not set the ESSID on either wireless adapter.
Using the GUI tools (which are only a front end for the command line tools so I have no idea why everyone thinks a GUI front end like wicd will magically work where the command line tools don't!!) I simply wait a long time for "getting network address" before it eventually fails. LOTS of information in pastebin, please make the effort to read it before asking me for things I have already supplied. And please keep any "RTFM noob" or "go back to ubuntu" replies to yourself. I HAVE read the f*cking documentation and I do not want to go back to ubuntu. I just want to get my wireless working in debian.
My wireless is a libertas 88w8335. Suse 11.4 just installed. For this one, I need a windows driver with ndiswrapper. ndiswrapper is installed, and the driver as well.
I can see my networks with iwlist scan my network is set up in yast with ifup (I can scan the networks and find mine), but I cannot connect to my Acces point : there is no SSID with iwconfig.
i keep reading about hostapd but i never figured out how to get the daemon working properly, heck i haven't figured out how to get the ethernet card ti bridge to the wlan card through command line
ps the wireless interface i want to set up as an access point is an SMC usb card that uses the zd1211rw firmware, i checked and it supports AP mode.i was told that you don't have to put the card into master mode all you have to do is configure the hostapd.conf daemon correctly and start the daemon, it will automatically brodcast an ap without an further configurations.
I'm able to configure my Wireless network to connect with an AP with WEP key but...
Now I'm at home, I've a WPA2 key (my router now is supporting both, WPA and WPA2). I used WICD to connect but no success at all! It just stops with "Connection failed: Could not contact the wireless access point"

View 9 Replies View RelatedI clicked "Network Settings", and I found that the ip address was wrong, which is "192.168.1.10/24", and netmask field is empty, so I modifed the configuration file located in /etc/sysconfig/network, named ifcfg-wlan0, added one line(NETMASK= '255.255.255.0'), saved it and reboot the system. After rebooting the system, I still found the ip address is wrong and netmask field is empty, so I have to use ifup command to activate my card manually every time the system starts.

It is evidently due to patchs Canonical has added to the drivers). In a nutshell, I need a Debian-based Gnome distro with good driver/codec support built in that doesn't worry as much about "free-ness" nor legal pitfalls in certain countries about codecs.This is seen at bug report:
http://intel 3945ABG Sad, too, is that Canonical seems to not be interested in fixing this bug. In fact, with each new distro update, the bug seems to get worse. With this track recored, I don't have high hopes for Lucid. I really need to update the laptop it is on. I am looking for a good Gnome-based debian distro, but prefer one where I won't have to do a whole bunch of downloading "non-free" things like drivers and such (not even sure how to do this since medibuntu is for Ubuntu base distros and I'm not sure if it will work with a "non-patched" Debian repo.
Seems like most debian branches are in fact also Ubuntu branches. I had high hopes for Mepis, but it is KDE-based, and I don't want to go that way. After making the switch to Gnome almost a decade ago, I'm not wanting go mess with KDE anymore.
I have to avoid the Ubuntu distros as they have the same problem (for example, Linux Mint is what I have on this laptop as the wireless sort of worked if just browsing the web but download large files breaks it. It is essentially non-function in Jaunty and Karmic.) I will keep using Ubuntu Netbook Remix on the 4 netbooks we own. And Mint on the desktop and My personal laptop. I would just like advise on a good Debian to use for this other certain laptop.
I decided to change my DSL internet connection to cable and WiFi. So far so good, and under Windows, the system is very well working.
I use openSuse 11.1 but I can't establish contact between my computer and the new Wireless N acces point.

I mean I was connected and everything and the next time I restarted It could not detect any wireless network. I deleted the wireless network card in hopes that the OS will automatically detect it on startup and set it right but NOPE. When I check the hardware information in YAST, it is listed there and it is also working under Windows.

OK, what I want to do, I think is possible but I dont kno name of it or how 2 do it under even windows for that matter. I have my current PC connected via Ethernet directly to my house router. Now on this Motherboard, I also have a wireless nic that I have no plans on usin. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a complicated situation due to my goals and network structure. I have in mind a potential solution, a bridge, but I do not know whether it is feasible or what hardware it will require.
The network:
My apartment community provides residents with free Internet access through an ancient T1 line. We do not have the option of other Internet providers, so having a router and modem in the home are not an option. The T1 line is split among some 24 switches, one for each building, and each switch has one port per floor. At each floor, there is a D-link WAP, and each has a separate SSID and WEP key. Additionally, they control access at the switch level using Access Control.
My goals:
I'm used to being in control of my networked environment. I like to have friends over often, and most of them have a laptop, a smart phone, or both, which makes Access Control a pain. I don't want to have to think ahead and get their MAC addresses to the IT consultant while he's here during business hours. My wife and I have 6 devices, two of which require an Ethernet connection.
I use a few applications for streaming that utilize UDP (I'm not sure if the WAPs are smart enough to even handle this) and I don't like having my traffic muddled with my neighbors.
I should note that I tried extending the network with my Airport Extreme router, which apparently only works with other Apple devices. I've also looked into WDS, but that seems to require an unlikely amount of cooperation from the IT consultant on site.
The potential solution: a Linux server that acts as a router. Ideally, it could act as a webserver for a small static site as well, but let's focus on the routing. I'd like to bridge two NICs and use masquerading (Internet Connection Sharing). The public interface would connect to the WAP using WEP. The private interface would allow up to 8 devices to connect to the server.
It seems easy enough to configure the public interface, and even to bridge the connections. What I've never done before is purchase a wireless card that can accept multiple clients. Maybe they can all do this?
I have a Sonicwall access point, which I am able to set up through the interface, but after that I am unable to achieve a connection through my wireless card. I have a good understanding of everything involved, but really have no hands on experience when it comes to networking.

Also, I should have mentioned that @ the interface for the Sonicwall it said that "no DNS server had been specified", but I set it up for DHCP, and I thought my ISP is using PPPoE (which I also thought used DHCP).

I just installed the wicd network manager and when i was setting it up it said it couldn't find the ip address so when i input the address its saying it can't connect to a wireless access point. I am using wireless that has worked with the default network manager but will not work with this one.

I also have a second problem, which is that I want to use WebMin to manage this server, but I cannot figure out how to get the ADSL client module configured -- RP-PPPoE version 3. It seems to expect to work with pppoe-start, pppoe-stop, and pppoe-status, but when I try to run pppoe-status it says "Link is down", even though my ppp connection is actually working.Is is possible to use the WebMin ADSL client module with Ubuntu? I spent a lot of time trying to get pppoe-start, stop, etc. working but it was a complete mess and never seemed to behave.
