Ubuntu Networking :: Getting To Recognize Wireless Card?

Jan 7, 2010

Moving this to new topic, since it's no longer under wireless connectivity issues. [Noob Warning] I was having trouble getting Ubuntu to recognize my wireless card, as I have changed from the 3965 that came in my computer to the 4965, which added increased range and G band. Anyway, I read one of the threads on here, and this was the advice given:

I followed instructions found on launchpadI installed the ubuntu-firmware-nonfree package from synaptic and rebooted the laptop.dmesg showed that the card is detected and loaded correctly as a Wi-Fi adapter and in the network manager I can see broadcasted wireless networks.I tried to connect to both an open (unprotected) and a WPA network without any success.

General :: Can't Recognize Wireless Card

Jan 29, 2010

i'm run'n knoppix 6.5 (i think) from a usb stick. under 'ifconfig' it finds 'eth0', but when i put in 'iwconfig eth0' it says: 'eth0 no wireless extensions'. i've tried other linux live cd's but to no avail...interestinly enough, when i run a linux (ubuntu) live cd on my virtual pc it hooks up(?..i figure bcuz its reading from da virtual ethernet?) further more, i researched it to the conclusion that the driver is not being detected. i tried ndiswrapper (under 'puppy') but tht didnt work either ( i've downloaded the lastes version of ndiswrapper and i plan on trying it again w/ the installation disk of the wireless card). however, even in my research i've seen there seem to be a difficulty in getting this particular driver to work? (netgear wg311v3 - wireless g pci adapter) how i can over come this problem? i'm kinda new @ linux, but i like the challenge. it doesnt matter wat linux system (the responder) i'll download it. but i'm really trying to get 1 online cuz i have to learn how to work the packaging systems.

My problem is the computer does recognize the wireless connections but when I put the wep key It just start trying to connect and then asks for it again, and this goes on and on and on. Ubuntu Networking :: Get Kismet To Recognize Wireless?

I'm trying to get Kismet up and running with Ubuntu 10.10 and I'm using an Atheros AR928X, but I don't know what to put in the etc/kismet/kismet.conf file under the line source=

Do I need to install madwifi drivers, or are the drivers that come with Ubuntu sufficient enough? I've been reading other forums and on Google that I should put source=madwifi_g,ath0,madwifi but my device is not ath0, it's wlan0 as shown with the lspci command.

Launching kismet_server: //usr/bin/kismet_server
Suid priv-dropping disabled. This may not be secure.
No specific sources given to be enabled, all will be enabled.
Non-RFMon VAPs will be destroyed on multi-vap interfaces (ie, madwifi-ng)
Enabling channel hopping.

In some other forum on UbuntuForums someone said to make some changes under SYSTEM>>ADMINISTRATION>>HARDWARE DRIVERS, but I don't have HARDWARE DRIVERS under that submenu. I don't see an option for it anywhere in my version of Ubuntu (Maverick 10.10).
