Debian :: Disabling The Nautilus File Scan?

May 18, 2010

Whenever I open a folder with the default browser (Nautilus), it does a quick scan of the contents. This is not a problem for normal folders, but it becomes one when a music folder contains several thousand files (I haven't yet tried with folders containing large amounts of non-music files). In such instances Nautilus sits there scanning and I can hear the hard drive seeking for a good while before it presents me with the contents of said folder. My music folder, for instance, contains some five thousand ogg files, and I have to wait *counts* a full minute before it displays its contents. I tried telling it to never count the number of files in the options, but it didn't help. So far, the only solution I've found is to use pcmanfm instead, which apparently does no scan and displays my music folder practically as soon as I click on it. Still, I like Nautilus more for everything else, so I'd much rather use that instead.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Clamscan File Or Folder Scan Freezes

Aug 13, 2010

I decided to check out nautilus-clamscan, in which all it does is add an option to scan the selected file or folder for viruses in the context menu, and while it works fine for some things highlighted, for some that I've randomly tried it freezes, and won't complete scanning. using the usual method of scanning for viruses through Clamtk, it scans those files and folders just fine, so it's not those themselves that's causing the freezing.

I previously had a solid install running xmonad, and wicd was working like a charm (using the same broadcom driver) but i tinkered too much with it and decided to do a fresh install. I haven't quite run into a problem like this before.

Debian Multimedia :: File Search In Nautilus Hangs

Jun 26, 2014

As of today I can't seem to use the search feature of Nautilus (in GNOME 3). Say I open my home folder and press Ctrl-F to get the search bar. Whatever I type, as soon as I stop typing and Nautilus should start the search process, it just freezes completely. The cursor stops blinking and that's it, all I can do is run `killall nautilus` from a terminal. According to the System Monitor nothing is really using CPU.

General :: Old File System Discovered After Disabling Ext4 Journaling

May 7, 2011

I bought a ssd drive for my laptop, installed it, installed Windows 7, installed Kubuntu 11.04. Till then everything worked fine, and I had following partitions on my disc:

Code:

/dev/sda1 ntfs ~100MB win boot,
/dev/sda2 ntfs ~170GB win main,
/dev/sda3 extended

[code]....

It worked fine. While using 11.04 I encountered a serious bug in nvidia 270.41.06, and decided to switch to Kubuntu 10.10. I installed 10.10 on the very same /dev/sda5 (clicking a checkbox to format it). Everything worked fine, grub was installed and pointing to win7, and kubuntu 10.10. I disabled ext4 journaling as above, rebooted, and found, that grub now points to win7 and 11.04, and that system (which should have been removed during installation of 10.10) loads perfectly fine. I checked where 11.04 had been installed - still /dev/sda5. Win7 loads fine as well, so no linux on /dev/sda2 I checked if there was 10.10 kernel in /boot - no. File system on sda5 had no trace of 10.10.

I formatted sda5 with gparted, installed 10.10 again, disabled journaling and situation repeated, whole file system on sda5 changed. Enabling journaling did nothing, 10.10 didn't come back. I deleted sda3, sda5, sda6, made them again, installed 10.10, disabled journaling, and finally had my 10.10 on ext4 without journaling. So this is kind of solved, but I would still like to know that the hell happend? For the moment it looked like two file systems coexistened on one partition.

Debian Configuration :: Disabling Usb Mounts ?

Apr 7, 2010

Let me quickly state that I am returning to Debian after quite a long break. I am trying to relearn some things. I suppose I'm somewhat old school. As in I originally installed from rawright, back in the days when you had to do practically everything by hand. I was quite happy with config and make. I actually learned a ton back then, as I started out knowing nothing. I guess I can learn to catch up with the modern linux world.

Anyway here is my question? In the old days if I wanted something not to be mounted I would simply comment out the entry in /etc/fstab. I notice that my USB drive is mounted but does not appear in the fstab. It is in mtab, and lsusb does show it.

If I wanted to secure a system, but not totally remove usb support from the kernel, how would I prevent the automounting of USB drives? What are the configuration files that govern their operation?

Ubuntu :: 'safe' Poweroff - Freezes On Disabling The Swap File And Doesn't Do Anything

Jan 9, 2010

Due to some reason not known to me at this moment, my regular shutdown doesn't work. It freezes on disabling the swap file and doesn't do anything. Now, until that problem is solved, I need a way to properly shutdown. I found one, which is poweroff -f, but it is hardly graceful, and would amount to 'flipping the switch' I guess. The other is hibernate, which is what I now use. This does work, but I rather completely shut down the system. For one, regular boot is quicker than resuming from hibernate.

My main question is: is there any way to make the poweroff -f command, e.g. combined with manually disabling the swap file or whatever,"safe?" as in, I can imagine a sudden power off meaning more chance of damage to the HD, which I don't want.

Debian Multimedia :: ATI Catalyst Keeps Disabling Second Display?

May 20, 2011

I have an ATI Radeon 5850 card with 2 17" monitors, plus a 46" TV via HDMI (disabled, except for BD plaback under windows) under Debian 6.0/Squeeze. When I first installed this system, it worked fine with all 3 screens (only 2 enabled at a time). Sometime in the past few weeks though, it's decided to revert to a single-display setup. I can't find any errors in the logfiles, and it works perfectly fine when I re-enabled the secondary display via the ATI Catalyst Control center.

The auto-generated xorg.conf isn't configured to use the second display (even after re-generating one using "aticonfig -initial=dual-head"), and it is not being modified when I change settings in the Catalyst Control Center.Updating display settings after every boot is just a bit annoying.

Debian Hardware :: Disabling Laptop Lid-close Action

Dec 17, 2011

Dell Latitude C610 laptop with Debian Squeeze.I am using the computer as a print and file server, accessing it with ssh, so I don't need the display (which is busted anyway). I want to close the lid without having the computer suspend. Could not find a way to make it happen with gnome-power-preferences or the BIOS settings. There is a script, /etc/acpi/lid.sh, that runs when the laptop lid switch changes. Part of the script is shown here:

Code: Select allgrep -q closed /proc/acpi/button/lid/*/state # this is a file of 1 line like "state:   open" or presumably "state:   closed"
if [ $? = 0 ]                               # The brackets evaluate to True when the lid is closed.
then
    if [ x$LID_SLEEP = xtrue ]; then
        [ -x /etc/acpi/sleep.sh ] && /etc/acpi/sleep.sh # i.e., if this file exists, then run it.
        exit
    fi
... there's more ...

The stuff that gets executed after the if [ #$ = 0 ] is the stuff that suspends the computer. So I just replaced the brackets with something that is certain to be false, so it will never happen:

Code: Select allif [ 1 = 2 ]
I admit this is FAR from an elegant solution, but it seems to work and it doesn't fubar the system.
