I am a newbie in ubuntu. I did clamscan on my ubuntu /, and I got the result message as follow. it shows "486 errors" I am wondering if the result is OK or I need to do some action on it.

Also, my engine is 0.96.5. The latest version is 0.97. But "aptitude upgrade" can not upgrade the engine to 0.97. I understand 0.97 is still on testing. I am wondering if I can just stay with 0.96.5 and wait for the 0.97 passing all tests. if so, does it cause any security issue?
I have network shares automounted in /media and I want to exclude them from my automatic scheduled ClamAV scan in Maverick. How do I do this? I can't find any CRON link or script that actually starts the scan. Is it the Daemon that does this?

I have installed ClamAV 0.95.3 into Ubuntu 9.10 (i386) fully patched
I am behind an authenticating proxy, so I've entered these details into freshclam.conf:
HTTPProxyServer myproxy.com
HTTPProxyPort 1234

So I changed the perms to 0700 (user is clamav).
Now I get:
$ sudo freshclam
ERROR: Can't open/parse the config file /etc/clamav/freshclam.conf
I checked DNS resolution with this (which I found in a thread somewhere):

This started happening sometime yesterday afternoon on a server that's been trouble free for years.
My Ubuntu update is scheduled to run every month on the 5th, so this was roughly 10 days after that. So it seems to me it's not update related. The only thing I've done on the server lately is update a spamassassin rule which required an amavis restart. That was done earlier in the week.
I've already reviewed issues at [url] and all the conditions are correct for the more recent How to.
I can also confirm that, in fact, /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl does not exist.
I have two servers complaining about ClamAV being outdated:

Doing an aptitude update says I don't have to upgrade anything. Why is this? Must ClamAV be updated manually?
Neither my Simple Scan nor the Xsane image scan facility appears to be able to scan a typed document to editable text. Is there software available to enable this facility on Ubuntu 10.10 using my HP Officejet 6313?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed squeeze on my eeepc 1015ped and downloaded the correct firmware-brcm80211 drivers but every time I scan for my network using iwconfig wlan0 scan or wicd, my computer completely freezes. I previously had a solid install running xmonad, and wicd was working like a charm (using the same broadcom driver) but i tinkered too much with it and decided to do a fresh install. I haven't quite run into a problem like this before.

I decided to check out nautilus-clamscan, in which all it does is add an option to scan the selected file or folder for viruses in the context menu, and while it works fine for some things highlighted, for some that I've randomly tried it freezes, and won't complete scanning. using the usual method of scanning for viruses through Clamtk, it scans those files and folders just fine, so it's not those themselves that's causing the freezing.

This is not a problem for normal folders, but it becomes one when a music folder contains several thousand files (I haven't yet tried with folders containing large amounts of non-music files). In such instances Nautilus sits there scanning and I can hear the hard drive seeking for a good while before it presents me with the contents of said folder. My music folder, for instance, contains some five thousand ogg files, and I have to wait *counts* a full minute before it displays its contents. I tried telling it to never count the number of files in the options, but it didn't help. So far, the only solution I've found is to use pcmanfm instead, which apparently does no scan and displays my music folder practically as soon as I click on it. Still, I like Nautilus more for everything else, so I'd much rather use that instead.

Request help with scanjet 3500c operation. xSane .996 in Ubuntu sees scanjet and scans. As soon as scan completes, the xSane windows(2) disappears and there are no copies in the intended save folder in Documents. Upon original attempt, the xsane windows had an additional third "Preview" window which has not returned since that first scan attempt?
One is not a computer guru by any imagination!
Info; the scanjet worked very well on the other "doze OS" and seems now, does not in the Ubuntu OS. In Doze, there was also a program for a HP PhotoSmart 3200 running and when I added the scanjet it might have been happy with that driver. Currently I do not have access to the driver disc for the 3200 with me. Too, it now takes ~45+ seconds for the scanjet to begin as compared to 2 - 3 seconds on doze.
Some internet self help searching seems to suggest the xSane 1.0.18 is the driver choice to use with the HP 3500c scanjet. When attempting to download, an archive "Failed" notice appears. I am a bit lost from here.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Windows Installation is infected even with Eset installed! I don't know how to clean it. Already tried safe mode scan, but that doesn't even clean it. The only reason I installed ubuntu was so that I could download infected files without any conserns of my windows parition being infected. When ever I download a file, I move it to the NTFS partition from where windows can access it. But just about a week ago when I booted into Windows, my whole drive was infected, not only windows installed partition but also all my NTFS partition. Can anyone please tell me how can I CLEAN the files rather than qurantine all the files which CLAMAV does!
Also, what steps should I take in advance before downloading a virus infected file? I know the virus could've have gotten in when I disable eset for some software installation but it should clean after boot or after being booted.But there should be a way to clean all my NTFS partition .... how? I don't know how to used CLAMAV properly because whenever I try to scan anything, it always returns with '0 files scan' because I think the directory scan doesn't work the way it should!
what a horrendous piece of software. Ive been at it 3 days trying to do something that ought to be simple and everytime i solve one problem another problem arises. at first I removed the old clamav 9.5 or something. I got the latest ubuntu release btw, and Clamav used to work when i first installed it in the previous ubuntu release. anyway, it asked me to upgrade, so since synaptic doesnt have the latest, i downloaded from sourceforge. I did the whole ./configure gave me errors like need build-essentials-- which i then did, error: need zlib.dv--- I did that one too. Now two more errors that i need to fix so I can compile it.

Still the synaptic has different version of clamav in it, one has 0.96.4 and the other has 0.96.5.Even one other installation of 10.04 has the 0.96.5 in the repository. Why can one installation show different version then the other?
I uses the Googles to search for an AntiVirus to install on Ubuntu, to check for viruses that attack windows. The only thing I could find resembling an antivirus is Clam Av, does it work well?
