Nov 2, 2010I am trying to store the results of my code to a separate text file.But the problem is, as my results comes from a loop, my text file shows only the last result, not all of them.Like if the loop runs 5 time the text file shows the result for the 5th step.But i need to store all of them (1 to 5).Can I use awk to print the output field and store to another file and creat a new line so that the next output field goes to a new line?(just an idea, dont know).

Apr 2, 2011I put a text file on my desktop and added a couple lines of text with gedit. File type shows text/plain. Double-click opens the file in gedit which is what I want. I'm using the file to temporarily hold some snips of code that I copy from file to file, but when I copy some html into the file and save it, now file properties show it's text/html and a double-click opens the file in firefox, which isn't what I want. Is there some way to keep the file type from changing itself?

Apr 4, 2011I remember using some dos program that would scan text files for particular words/patterns. It had an ncurses-like interface and if I'm not wrong its name was "Concord". Is there anything like that on linux? The main functionality was as follows:
1. support for regular expressions
2. print lines containing a particular word or pattern (highlighting it) and printing the surrounding lines.
3. print lines containing a particular word or pattern only if another pattern occurs within N words to the left/right.
The second point is easy to achieve in grep. The 3rd one could be done in awk. The problem is that as much fun as it would be to put it all together and embellish with some nice ncurses interface(eg. with dialog), I don't want to reinvent the wheel. Besides, I have just relocated and have been waiting for my phone line welcome pack for almost 2 weeks now (ie. no internet apart from work and mobile phone), which makes it difficult for me to get anything done.

Feb 6, 2011im trying to output a list of running processes via a shell script. At the moment i got this which outputs the processes to a text file called out.
echo $(ps aux) >>out
The problem is though, the processes are all just one big block of text which makes it hard to read. Does anyone know how to sort the output to a text file so that it prints to the text file at 1 process per line? I know its probably simple but im very new to linux.

Aug 11, 2010after update f12 to f13 geany stopped to work correctly on remote storage (sftp). Geany opens file correctly, but when I try to save, it saves empty file. I tried "notepad" and "gedit", they work good on f13. Geany on f12 worked correctly too.

May 18, 2010I just switched from Windows to Linux. I've been using EditPlus for many years mainly because of it's ability to save locally, and then send the file via FTP, with easy keyboard shortcuts (ctrl-s to save, ctrl-alt-s to ftp).
I also need syntax highlighting and basic code editing features. Is there anything for Linux that can do this? I don't want to run EditPlus via Wine
I need to save locally and remotely simultaneously, or at least with a few keystrokes. I already know of plenty of ways to edit remote files.

Jan 9, 2011I installed squeeze on my eeepc 1015ped and downloaded the correct firmware-brcm80211 drivers but every time I scan for my network using iwconfig wlan0 scan or wicd, my computer completely freezes. I previously had a solid install running xmonad, and wicd was working like a charm (using the same broadcom driver) but i tinkered too much with it and decided to do a fresh install. I haven't quite run into a problem like this before.

I wanted to load this data into a different database product (one that forked from Postgresql, so its syntax is very similar).I needed to change the syntax of the "COPY" command in the pg_dump output, remove references to "public", and change the table owner name. sed did these for me (albeit slowly). The output from pg_dump is a file called "pg-dump-output.sql".
