I'm trying to stop all boot time messages from appearing -- basically I'd like to have a simple blank screen from grub to xdm.
I tried everything -- used the "quiet" option in grub's config, added dmesg -n 1 to rc.local, changed console=ttySx, set kernel.printk in sysctl.conf to 4 1 1 7, and even eradicated rsyslogd altogether... to no avail. I still see all sorts of messages on my screen.
An issue that has been hassling me for years since I started using Linux (Debian!) is related to the boot messages that quickly scroll on the video during the boot process. The main hassle is related to the fact that I cannot get a log of those messages. The second hassle is due to the fact that with my brand new netbook (Toshiba NB200) I cannot even stop the scroll and go back along the message stream with SHIFT+PageUpDown to understand what's going on. Of course I know that I can get a log of the boot process with 'dmesg' but I get the feeling that the very first lines show some problem I cannot grab at all.

The process to mount partitions seems to be happening before the service /etc/init.d/lvm2 is started. I can get it mounted using "mount -a" command, but not during the boot time. What should I do get it automatically mounted on every boot?

One problem I have is that resolvconf (which is installed) does not start at boot time, but if I start it manually then bring the NIC down and back up, it works OK, with no error/warning messages.

With the newer Grub in Squeeze I am without a clue! I want to set up a ramdisk, say 128 Megs in size, and add that to my boot parameters so that it is created every time the machine starts. Do I set something in /etc/default/grub ?

It is laptop configuration, no NFS server(?) lenny with few installs from backports (open office and .30 kernel - for Intel 5300) vmwware (7), as well firestarter firewall
Can I disable it or change the boot order (via sysv-rc-conf ), so I can speed up my boot time?

However, if I run the command as root after the system boots it works fine.Been using this method on other distros for over a year. No idea what the problem is.
I am running Debian-Squeeze with apache2. However, apache2 doesn't start at boot time, even though there is of course the required script in init.d. I can start it later on using "/etc/init.d/apache2 start". I have checked the configuration with "apachectl configtest" - giving the answer "Syntax ok". How do I get it to start automatically at boot time?

View 3 Replies View RelatedLet me quickly state that I am returning to Debian after quite a long break. I am trying to relearn some things. I suppose I'm somewhat old school. As in I originally installed from rawright, back in the days when you had to do practically everything by hand. I was quite happy with config and make. I actually learned a ton back then, as I started out knowing nothing. I guess I can learn to catch up with the modern linux world.
Anyway here is my question? In the old days if I wanted something not to be mounted I would simply comment out the entry in /etc/fstab. I notice that my USB drive is mounted but does not appear in the fstab. It is in mtab, and lsusb does show it.
If I wanted to secure a system, but not totally remove usb support from the kernel, how would I prevent the automounting of USB drives? What are the configuration files that govern their operation?
How can I change the automatic fsck execution at boot time to be above 30 boots? I reboot the system sometimes 3 to 4 times a day. Intel 3 GHz, tower, i386 lenny vmlinuz-2.6.31-686
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to 10.04 through the Update Manager. During the updated however I got an error telling me that it was unable to install something. Sorry, I can't remember what it was; it didn't stop the updated so I assumed it wasn't that important. Anyways, I don't know if this is because of that error, but during the boot process and when shutting the computer I get console messages. When I boot it tells me that "mounting none on /dev failed No such device" and when I shut down I get these messages.I see this was asked before and that it isn't a big issue, but I'd still like to solve it. The problem is that I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux in general I don't know how to follow the very general instructions given in that thread.

However I am still seeing console messages at boot. I used grub-install after the changes.

I'm building a Debian Live system, [URL], and I've pared it down to a very light distro. It is using the IceWM, has the basic linux commands, and very very little else.
When I run "top" and "ps aux", I see that I have multiple terminals and logins waiting to be used. It's a small amount, but I'd like to make that RAM usable elsewhere. The indicated commands are: "/bin/login -f" and "-bash", and I have one of each associated with each tty[1-7]. I may want to keep tty1 and tty2, just in case, but I can't imagine wanting 3-7.
So, what I'm looking for is a way to stop tty[3-7] from even starting in the first place.
I saw on one forum the suggestion of modifying the /etc/init/tty[1-7].conf files, but these files aren't present, I presume because it's a "Live" system.
is there any way to disable kernel messages on the console? The problem I have is that it is almost impossible to work on the console due to a flood of file system errors from the kernel.
I've checked /etc/syslog.conf and disabled kernel logging to the console. Even with syslog turned off the messages still flood the console.
I have a Insprion 14R (N4010) and when I hibernate it will usually restore without a problem, but maybe 15% of the time it will reboot while loading. I would like to figure why, since I'd rather not lose anything... My swap space is 5.9GB, I have 4GB RAM (video uses 1gb, so I have 3gb usable)

I have a small LAN. I am in the process of installing a Debian Lenny/Squeeze system into the LAN. I want to send and receive system messages using rwalld and wall.I can send a system message from my Debian system to another box using rwall. I can send a local message within the Debian box using wall in a console.I cannot send a local message using wall Konsole in KDE 3.5.x. The KDE Write daemon fails to provide any pop-up window./usr/bin/wall is installed from the bsdutils package and is set to -rwxr-sr-x.
The ktalkd package is installed. The KDE control center shows a configuration option in Internet & Network settings called Local Network Chat.When not in X, mesg is set to y at the console. After starting KDE and I open Konsole, mesg is always set to n. I don't know how this setting toggles. Further, setting mesg to y in Konsole has no effect on getting wall to work.mesg is set to y when I run xterm in KDE. Then wall works within that terminal window. However, the KDE Write daemon does not see the message in xterm.When I send a message from another system to the Debian system using rwall, xterm receives the message but not Konsole or the KDE Write daemon.
I am *finally* getting around to rebuilding my file-sharing computer. I'll be sharing files with both Linux and Windoze machines. It's a home network, so there's nothing fancy needed. I know I have to tweak my smb.conf file until I'm satisfied with the features and security. I'm using SWAT and I'm starting with a bare-bones conf file. It's not secure but I can see the server and selected files/directories from my other Linux box.
My really dumb question is, do I have to reboot both the server and the client machines every time I change the SAMBA configuration? I thought I just had to stop and restart the SAMBA service in the SWAT software - but then the server disappears from my client. It looks like I need to reboot both machines for the client to see the server.

Every hour, I get an e-mail complaining about the first line of the crontab:

I get the same complaint from the other entries: It looks to me as if cron, or anacron, is trying to execute the user (root) as a command. Predictably, the shell doesn't like it, so barfs and triggers an e-mail about it. Why is this not doing what the man page says it should do? The 2nd problem I believe is related to exim, not cron. The e-mails I'm getting above are being bounced from my ISP because they are directed to root@myisp.com, rather than my regular e-mail address. When the message bounces, it bounces to my regular e-mail address. In /etc/aliases, I have root: [URL]... and in etc/email-addresses I have root: [URL]... Adding the entry to /etc/email-addresses allowed the bounce to find me because the sender's address is [URL]... but how can I get cron to send these messages to me in the first place, instead of root?
Installed 6.01a from DVD 1 on a system with 4GB ram. Installer installed amd64 version by default. When I try to install amd64.deb files I get "wrong architecture" error messages from the package manager.

I've got a Shorewall (Shoreline?) firewall up and running, but it's logging to /var/log/messages. I'd much rather have it logging to another location e.g. /var/log/firewall but can't find (a clear enough) explanation on how to do this. Apparently, it varies greatly depending on the distro, the kernel, and the version of Shorewall that is running. You'd think it would be something as simple as setting a path in a config file, but apparently not. I'm running a stock Lenny kernel on the firewall machine. It comes with version 4.0.15 of Shorewall.

I have an Ubuntu/Win7 dual boot system with GRUB as my default bootloader, and I am often distracted by other things when I boot up my PC. Is there any way I can stop GRUB from loading linux automatically after it times out? I would prefer if it never timed out, and I could eternally have the OS selection on the screen until I decide to select an OS.Have been reading the GNU Grub Manual, but I can't make heads or tails of some of the more technical stuff yet and I do not know enough about Terminal to know all of the commands they are throwing at me.
