I just installed, and evolution doesn't seem to think it has internet. The icon with the power cord in the bottom left is unplugged, and send/receive is greyed out. Internet is working , but it is not using network manager, since network manager says no internet is connected. Maybe this has something to do with it?
View 1 RepliesI'm trying to use network-manager in sid and it's incredibly frustrating because every 2 minutes or so it seems to scan for wireless access points, during which time my SSH connections completely hang and screw up. Pings start dropping packets as well. By doing an "iwlist scan" I can reproduce the behavior. Has anyone else dealt with this? I haven't been using network-manager, but I am currently due to mobility and needed VPN functionality... WICD with no network-manager works better but there's no gui-based VPN support. I've got an Atheros wireless device and I've read that supposedly it should be doing background scanning since kernel 2.6.32, but I haven't seen anything like that, and I'm on 2.6.32-5-amd64 currently, 2.6.32-3-amd64 behaves the same too.

I tryed with wicd who said that the connection is WEP (and it's not, it is setup to WPA on the router and the network-manager conncetion) and when i try to connect i get bad password. I tryed with network-manager uninstalled and no chance.
I recently installed fedora 15 on my computer but I have a huge problem. I can connect to my router wirelessly for a couple of minutes only. Afterwards my computer has no Internet connection although the network manager and the icon on the upper bar says that i am still connected. I tried editing the /etc/rc.local and /etc/resolv.conf as mentioned in other posts in here bit no luck so far.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just reinstalled debian on my computer, I've had it working for a long time, only difference is I used to have Cable Internet and now I use DSL. Anywho, I reinstalled debian from the kde CD on the debian website, it auto-configured my network out of the box. My network is connected to the computer, pinging google works perfectly, and ifconfig shows that eth0 is working correctly without any errors. However on both Konqueror and Iceweasel, every time I try to connect to a website, it tells me the server cannot be found. Basically it acts like I don't have internet. Using the terminal works though, I have installed KDE-FULL from the terminal and wicd, so I know I do have internet. I don't know what it could be, like I said, I installed from the cd and this happened. Maybe there's a bug on the KDE debian cd

When i disconnect those devices and connect my Debian PC only then my PC connects to internet but other devices connected to it later do not get inernet connection.
When I connect my Debian PC using LAN Cable to the same router all devices work fine.
I'm currently running my own postfix server which is the MX for my domain. This is hosted in my house at the moment on the end of an ADSL line with a static IP. However, I'm trying to go totally mobile so I can kill the ADSL and the line rental and switch to 3G. Does anyone know a solution which allows me to accept (or ask for delivery) of SMTP when temporarily connected and queues it externally? Sort of like a hosted mail queue which pumps SMTP onto my laptop only when I ask it to.

Since a recent update on Stretch, I have been unable to use the network-manager to connect to my home wireless network on my laptop. It was working fine before. I did not change any settings on the WLAN router. I can still connect to other wireless networks at work and university, just not this particular one at home. All other non-Debian devices in my household are still able to connect just fine.While figuring this out, I have tried connecting manualy with ifup but I don't really know how that works. Right now there is only the loopback entry in /etc/network/interfaces.

I just upgraded my Debian stretch via apt-get and I noticed that the network manager is missing at least 2 icons: the mobile broadband icon and the settings icon. I haven't found any bug reports or other information about how to restore them. The icons were there after initial installation of version 8.2.0 from DVD.

After fossicking around I can not find anything around that I can invoke in a terminal to configure settings in network-manager. The applet(?) on the task bar doesn't ask for a login, so options are grey/grayed out. The "program" in the applications menu is similarly grey/grayed out.
If it was a once off, then I suspect that it would be simple as login as root to start X, but I have a series of config files to edited each time of their initial use. also, there is the ongoing problem of vpn target switching.
woops; wheezy with xfce4 and everything is uptodate.

After today's squeeze update the nm-applet (it updated it to version 0.8.4-1) crashes when trying to connect to my vpn (pptp). I'm pretty new when it comes to this so I'm not sure what to do. I tried looking at the log file (applications--> system tools-->log file viewer) but I don't know what to make of it.

I have a new install of Debian Squeeze from debian-6.0.0-amd64-kde-CD-1.iso but I'm experiencing problems with the wireless internet applet in the taskbar.When the computer boots, it doesn't connect automatically eventhough I have it set as such. I have to fiddle with it until I get the request from KDE Wallet Manager to insert the password to complete the connection. I didn't have this behavior in Kubuntu.

But recently I installed Debian again on a new laptop that I recently bought and unfortunately it's being very different from my first successful installation. The first problem is that Network Manager is not picking up internet on the new laptop. The Wireless tab is grayed out, so I can't click it and look for a new one. I've been using Wired internet since, but if I want to take it to work I have to have it be Wireless-able. Currently my Wireless Card is a Broadcom 4313 802.11 b/g/n which I'm fairly sure is supported. The second problem is installing Firefox. On my first installation it worked fine, and the bin file loaded and everything. However, for this second one that's been a completely different situation and the bin file hasn't worked (by this I mean I can't double click it to open it).
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just updated my Squeeze system. The update included a newer version of network-manager (and it can not be more than a few hours old). After the update all network functionality on my machine (via knetwork-manager) is broken. The GUI applet has no effect.
Hence can anyone help me: a) Downgrade network-manager by one version; b) Find out what is causing knetworkmanager to break; c) See if the problem is with knetworkmanager or network-manager.
I am currently using Debian Testing, managing my wireless connection with NetworkManager and the Gnome nm-applet. Both have just been updated: network-manager from 0.8.1-6+squeeze1 to 0.8.2-6 and network-manager-gnome from 0.8.1-2 to 0.8.2-4.On installation of the new packages, I have no problems. However, on a reboot, I can no-longer connect to any wireless connection. I am not prompted on start-up for the password to unlock the Gnome keyring and when I left-click on the nm-applet icon and then click on a network to connect to it, nothing happens.I do not think this is a driver or NetworkManager daemon problem. If I run "nmcli dev wifi" or left-click on the applet icon, NetworkManager seems to scan for wireless networks properly and returns a list including the one I wish to connect to.

Today, I have an ADSL box which is my gateway to internet (192.168.0.1).
I have a Raspberry pi (RPI) which I use as a dhcp & dns server (192.168.0.2).
Recently my mobile phone operator installed a 4G antenna beside my home, and the bandwidth and latency are much better with my mobile phone than with my internet provider (ADSL).
I would like to install a wifi dongle on my RPI (I would get wlan0 & eth0 interfaces)
When RPI detect my shared phone connection (tethering) I would like RPI to automatically route internet:
- from authorized devices on my network to my mobile connexion (wlan0 -> mobile phone).
- from other devices to the standard ADSL internet (eth0 -> ADSL box).
I don't want any device to use the shared 4G connexion, best would be authorized devices to be selected by MAC address. How I should properly setup such a network ?
I can connect to the wireless at my school, but the connection drops frequently and regularly. Network Manager still shows bars indicating the network strength and shows that it's connected to the network in the dropdown. Selecting the network again causes it to indicate that it disconnects and reconnects. At this point I have wireless until the connection drops again. Possibly relevant details: This is the Purdue PAL2.0 network, which can be tricky to connect to, particularly for Linux users. It's a hidden network using WPA2 and PEAP. My computer is a Dell Inspiron 1420n laptop, circa August 2007.

I'm using SuSE 11.3. I have installed this betavine stuff with which I can use my Vodafone mobile connect usb device. (vodafone-mobile-connect-2.10.01-1.noarch.rpm + dependencies.) I was able to get it to run, it can connect, I can even send text messages (SMS) with it.
However, if I try to use the internet, the system behaves as it wasn't connected to it at all. ping doesn't see anything, neither does firefox etc. I have turned off all proxy and firewall settings.
I suppose I should tell Linux to use this connection for the internet, but how? Do I have to configure something with NetworkManager?
I have a compaq cq40-133tu laptop. I have windows vista ultimate and ubuntu 9.10 parallely installed. Most of the time i use Ubuntu for programming purpose. But for internet connection i have to go to windows. This is because ubuntu is getting connected to the network but is unable to access internet, whereas the windows can. I want to totally abandon windows. Recently i got internet connection in ubuntu for just 15 minutes or so when i ticked the option AVAILABLE TO ALL USERS. but after that the same story continues and iam not able to access internet. View 9 Replies View RelatedOn the 25th of January, one of my computers randomly stopped being able to connect to the Internet. It was running a dual boot (Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS & Windows XP SP2), and is connected to the network via an ethernet cable (no wireless). According to the Network Manager, everything is working okay (there was no change from when I was able to access the Internet).
When I would use Firefox, I would get the message "Waiting for (page)...". However, this is not a Firefox only problem, as every program requiring Internet access (e.g. Evolution) is unable to connect to the Internet.
I compared the Internet settings to those of my father's Windows XP SP1 computer, which is able to connect to the Internet. There was no difference, except for the IP Address and Hardware Address. Because of this, I incorrectly deduced that either the actual Ethernet cable or the wall plug was faulty. I tried using a different cable and connecting to the Ethernet wall plug used by the aforementioned computer. Nothing changed. I was still unable to connect.
I didn't worry about it until Tuesday, when my other computer had exactly the same problem. It is running a triple boot between Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS, Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP SP2, and I am unable to obtain Internet access using any partition. As with the previous case, my computer showed no change in the Internet settings, and the computer also shows it as being connected to the network. It is also connected via an Ethernet cable.
I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000, and I installed Ubuntu before and it worked flawlessly until I decided that I had to go back to Win7 because of certain program compatibility issues.I'm back here trying to set it up and am having no issues except for with my wireless. I can see all of the SSID's, I am able to connect to my wireless, and it displays that I have been assigned an IP and all of the other settings given by DHCP.
I have been trying to fix this for hours, googled, searched these forums, and have spent time with some people on the Ubuntu IRC channel and we are unable to come up with a fix.

The strange thing is that although nothing will load when I try to visit facebook.com, google.com, or any other website... I opened the update manager and I noticed that it would download for 30ish seconds, stop and do nothing for 60ish seconds, resume for another 30, stop, resume, etc. until it finished. I am able to ping my router, and 8.8.8.8, but I am unable to ping [URL].
I just installed a dualboot win7/F15 on my laptop (dell XPS 15) and everything seems to be working fine except that when I connect to my network it is connected and the network is accessible (I can visit my gateway/ router) but when I try to visit a website it simply never ends loading it.Internet is working on win7 so it isn't my network's fault.Now I found somewhere that updating could help but since I dont have internet I can't update

View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to 10.10 the day it came out, and haven't had any problems with internet stuff. My wireless card works without any proprietary drivers. Last night, the computer stopped connecting to the internet. I am still connected to my wifi network, but I can't do anything online. I had assumed that my internet connection was just down in general, and tried resetting the computer, shutting down the computer and then turning it on again, and rebooting the modem, but then my Xbox connected, and my laptop running 10.04 connected, so I'm confused as to what is going in. Any ideas?
