Debian Multimedia :: Network-manager - Openvpn Does Not Ask For Password ?

Mar 9, 2011

I have setup my laptop to connect to a VPN server running openvpn.

This works fine if I from the client, start OpenVPN from the terminal. /etc/init.d/openvpn start

It then asks for a password for the certificate, which is should.

I have then installed the OpenVPN option for the Gnome network manager (network-manager-openvpn), so I could use the nm-applet for this, instead.

But it seems to be that there is a little bug, so I does not prompt me for the certificate password, OR use the password this is actually set for the certificate. (kinda irritating)

I get the following error on on the client.

nm-openvpn[2936]: ERROR: could not read Private Key username/password/ok/string from management interface

It seems like an very old bug, I tried the following without any luck (Yes I noticed it was for Ubuntu). [url]

OpenSUSE Network :: Network Manager Requires To Enter Password Every Time - Login To Unlock Password Keyring?

Jan 29, 2009

I've tried Ubuntu, Arch, and most recently Fedora but the SUSE GNOME environment blows everything else away!

The only problem (so far) is that Network Manager requires you to enter your password every time you login to unlock the password keyring. I want to disable this.

I think some distros disable the prompt by using the login password to unlock the keyring, but I use auto-login (if that makes a difference).

Ubuntu Networking :: Openvpn Using Network Manager

Apr 28, 2011

I've seen this issue and it never seems to get resolved maybe this time I can find a fix.I'm currently using ubuntu 11.04 although i've had this issue since 10.04 and 10.10When using openvpn in windows it works perfectly fine but when using openvpn on ubuntu that's a completely different story I import my .ovpn file from clearos it loads the keys just fine but when it tries to connect it say's "no valid vpn secrets"

On clearos it gives you 3 certs and a .ovpn file the file sets it to use password with tls certs but it still comes up with this error, i've been quite stumped and it would be nice to possibly shed some light on this so I can finally get ubuntu to work with openvpn if possible.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Network-manager-openvpn - Emacs ?

Oct 4, 2010

It's been a while since I meant to resolve this emacs-related issue when installing basically any package.

Since I really need network-manager-openvpn, I decided to finally try and ask.

This is a known bug I believe, with no fix if I understand well. My question is: is there a way to go around it (instead of fixing it)

Here it goes : when installing a package (in this case, network-manager-openvpn), emacs gets in the way like this:

Code:

And the package is not installed.

I have already tried uninstalling emacs. Doesn't work...

Ubuntu Networking :: Config OpenVPN Client For SwitchVPN In Network Manager From Windows Ovpn Files?

Jul 17, 2011

I have ovpn configuration files for Windows from SwitchVPN. They do not provide configuration files for GNU/Linux. They said I can extract the certificate and key files from the ovpn files, but I'm confused about how to do that.First of all, I don't know which Authentication Type to choose: "Certificates (TLS)," "Password," "Password with Certificates (TLS)" or "Static Key."

Second, I don't know what to put where from the ovpn file. I see a <ca> </ca> section and a <tls-auth> </tls-auth> section, but I don't see how those correspond to any of the Authentication Types. "Certificates (TLS)" and "Password with Certificates (TLS)" require two certificates and a key, "Password," requires one certificate and no key, and "Static Key" requires a key and key direction but no certificate. When I connect to SwitchVPN in Windows, it asks for a user name and password. Here's an example of the ovpn files (certificate and key contents removed):

Quote:

route-delay 3
fast-io
client
dev tun

[code]...

how to get what I need from the ovpn files, and which Authorization Type to choose in the Network Manager VPN configuration GUI, and what to put in the blanks?

General :: Way To Prevent Network Manager From Storing Password For Wireless Network

Sep 27, 2010

Our corporate wireless network uses continuously changing passwords with RSA tokens. So every time we need to connect to the wireless we need to enter a new password off the RSA token. For extra fun using the wrong password a couple of times in a row causes the users account to be locked.Network manager automatically stores and reuses the password, with the net result that it is constant getting my account locked. Is there some way to prevent it from storing my password for that network?

Ubuntu :: Network Manager Password Problem.

Jan 2, 2010

After forgetting my general password/password lost by Ubuntu (uses @...) I use the Psychocats lost password guide: [url]

This allowed me to reset my password but now after login the Network Manager applet pops up and demands a password.

This password is the original password that has now been changed. Putting this original password works.

I've now changed my password back to the original one to avoid the Network Manager prompt but I can't find where to change the Network Manager password or tell it to use my general password.

If I change my general password Network Manager asks for the old one.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Forgetting WPA Password

Jan 23, 2010

Booted up my laptop with wireless disabled (using the little switch on the laptop). I flipped the switch, network manager showed all the wireless networks, but didn't connect to any. So I picked mine, and it asked for the WPA key. Now normally (if I had booted with wireless enabled) it would connect without asking for the WPA key. So I rebooted again with wireless enabled this time, and same deal. It seems that it's just forgotten the key altogether.

I put in the key and it's all back to normal, but I'd like to know where/how network manager is storing the WPA key, and why it forgot it.

Debian :: WICD Network Manager Does Not Detect Any Network / Resolve This?

Jan 16, 2011

I have installed WICD on Debian . I can now access a new a Network Manager screen, which did not exist before, but it does not display/detect any wireless networks. It is like dead. Before installing WICD I did at least have a wireless WPE encrypted network, which was detected, although it often disconnected for no known reasons. Now even that Network has gone and I can't go on line. Can anybody help here? How can I configure the WICDNetwork Manager to detect an existing network or create a new one? In the latter case, would I have to reconfigure the Router settings to setup/connect to a network in Debian? May be I have to do this, because Tor/Vidalia changes my IP address and so my Network Adapter ( Linksys) can no longer connect to the router.
Also, when trying to follow troubleshooting leads in this connection, the Terminal screen on Debian ( CMD) would often return a PERMISSIONS DENIED message.

Debian :: Network Manager Can't Share Network Connection?

Nov 13, 2015

In Googling around it appears that the Network Manager used to have a nice simple (obvious, logical, straightforward, intuitive, easy-to-use... ... can you tell I'm a bit surprised that there's not a simple button to do this, it's pretty common functionality ) option in the IPv4 tab called "Shared to other computers" allowing you to share your network connection with any computers connected to yours... kind of like this:

[URL] ....

Professor Google seems to indicate that this may have existed in Debian at one point but, I don't see this option anymore. How do I get it back (or is there another gui way to do this without editing the /etc/network/interfaces file... if there's no other way to do this... that's fine but I'd prefer an easy method of enabling and disabling sharing)?

What I'm trying to do... I have a Beaglebone Black connected via IP over USB. When I'm ssh'ed into the BeagleBone, I want to be able to use aptitude install to grab new packages etc... and that kind of requires access to the outside world. Everything I've found so far seems to to require a modification to the interfaces file but since (according to the interfaces man page) the preferred method is to use the network manager if possible... I'm trying to avoid that.

* It should be noted that I'm running sid with the experimental 4.3 kernel so... maybe in doing so I've shot myself in the foot?

Ubuntu Security :: Get Openvpn Start-up Script To Ask For A Password?

Jul 20, 2011

I have to say, I'm a little astonished at how anxious people are to bypass password checks on networks, all for the convenience of having things come up automatically. But given the world as we find it, I'm seeking a different approach.

I have an OpenVPN network. It works fine, but for my laptop, I've selected a client certificate that requires a password, so that if it falls into nefarious hands, the thief will not have immediate access to the VPN.

I'm trying not to have any data at all on the laptop (yes, a waste of a 500GB drive). So I want the VPN up even before I log in through the GUI.

It would be nice if the boot-up sequence would pause for the openvpn start script to ask for this password. I see the script contains a line "# X-Interactive: true" which I understand from documentation is supposed to accomplish this. But it doesn't. OpenVPN simply fails to start, which is better than the alternative, but a pain.

I have already disabled the splash screen (having been around Linux for over ten years, I am more comfortable seeing boot-up messages anyway, though even on this x86 they flash on so quickly I'm not sure I'm really gaining anything).

What am I missing?

Software :: Debian Network Manager

Jan 10, 2010

I have been trying to get network-manager up and running in order to connect to my work's VPN easily, but it is proving to be a real pain. I am using Debian Lenny.

I then added myself to the group netdev and rebooted but it is still not running. What's more, when installing network-manager, aptitude has also installed resolvconf which screwed up my /etc/resolv.conf. It decided to make a symlink of resolv.conf to '/etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf' which doesn't exist and 'run' is itself a symlink to '/lib/init/rw/resolvconf' which doesn't exist! Talk about simplicity. So I just manually created and altered a new resolv.conf.If anyone knows what is going on with network manager then any help would be much appreciated. One last thing: I read that I need to comment out any configuration of eth0 from /etc/network/interfaces in order for network-manager to manage said interface. I previously had eth0 setup with a static IP. I trust network-manager will allow me to do this once it starts behaving?
