Networking :: How To Make Nslookup Return Failure If DNS Server Fails

Mar 23, 2011

I'm trying to find a command to tell nslookup, "I want you to try to resolve hostname X using DNS server Y, and if the lookup fails, just output failure do NOT fail over to some other DNS server as a backup and use it to try to resolve the same hostname."I'm trying to follow the man page instructions for doing this, but it doesn't seem to work. The man page for nslookup on my system (CentOS 5.5) includes the line:

"[no]fail Try the next nameserver if a nameserver responds with SERVFAIL or a referral (nofail) or terminate query (fail) on such a response."But if I try using that option, the output seems to indicate that after the lookup failed on ns1.afraid.org, nslookup failed over to 208.67.220.220 (the first nameserver listed in my resolv.conf -- an OpenDNS nameserver) and used it to resolve the hostname instead.

Ubuntu :: CTRL-ALT-F7 Fails To Return To X11?

Aug 13, 2010

This is a problem which has been plaguing me ever since the upgrade from Karmic to Lucid.

I used to be able to log into any one of the seven TTYs.

CTRL-ALT F1-six all work fine. Problem is if I log into one I can't get back to the GUI.

Immediately after the upgrade, I was told by some people that this was deprecated along with startx and I should use sudo gdm service start instead.

This doesn't work for me If I have to open a terminal when a nasty game freezes and I have to kill it from a terminal.

I am trying to see if something it aliased correctly but i cannot list all the names a system is know by.

I am sure its something simple I am missing with a switch.

Networking :: Nslookup Returns Connection Timed Out

Feb 4, 2011

I am not so experienced with networking in Linux. I've successfully installed Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5.2 on a VMware host. When I issued nslookup command, it returns "connection timed out" error as follows:

Code:
[root@rac1 ~]# time nslookup rac1
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
real 0m15.038s
user 0m0.000s
sys 0m0.000s

My questions are:
(1) Is that error normal?
(2) Is there a way to decrease the 15.038s value? rac1 is the local hostname, so why it takes all that time to resolve it.

Following info may help:
Code:
[root@rac1 ~]# hostname
rac1.mydomain.com
[root@rac1 ~]# cat /etc/hosts

# that require network functionality will fail.

Networking :: Nslookup Returning Multiple Names On RedHat With Windows AD

Jun 11, 2010

Recently I installed RedHat Enterprise 5 on a windows machine. The machine is configured to use DHCP, but I have been seeing some strange behavior if I do nslookup on the machine's IP:

[someuser@lin01 mydir]$ nslookup 10.5.x.x
Server: 10.10.x.xx
Address: 10.10.x.xx#53
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = xyz.something.
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = lenovo-d1690047.
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = pqdlds.
x.x.5.10.in-addr.arpa name = lin01.mydomain.com.

Where only the last entry of [URL] is actually correct, how can remove the other entries? I spoke to my IT Manager and he cannot see these stale entries in the DNS (we are using windows AD)

Programming :: Bash - Automatically Build A Set Of Packages And Redirect Output Into Logs - Failed Make Should Return A Non-zero Value

Jun 27, 2011

I have a set of bash scripts that I'm running that automatically build a set of packages for me and redirect their output into logs. Basically, I have a bunch of lines that are something like this: ${CONFIGURE_DIR}/configure &> ${LOG_DIR}/log or cd ${CONFIGURE_DIR} && make &> ${LOG_DIR}/log, etc.

This is supposed to make the entire process silent. However, sometimes with some packages some output leaks to my console (either stdout or stderr). I'm thinking that maybe the configure scripts/make are executing commands within new shell instances that don't inherit my redirect, or something to that effect.

Another reason for thinking this is that in another part of my script I detect errors when running make by testing with "if [ $? -ne 0 ]", and if the redirect leaks to my console and also the leaked output indicates that the build failed ("make: Error" and so on), then my $? test fails (i.e., it thinks that $? == 0, whereas a failed make should return a non-zero value). It's as if my original script can't "see" the results from child commands executed from later scripts.

Ubuntu Networking :: Headless Server Fails To Load GUI Without Attached Monitor

I am running a server that is mostly headless, but does run the Gnome environment (I have ubuntu-desktop installed). I usually administer it via VNC over SSH. My problem is that when I reboot the system over SSH, the system fails to fully load the GUI, which prevents me from connecting via VNC (although SSH still works).

When I connected a monitor and rebooted, the system booted up fine. It appears that the GUI will not load without an attached monitor, which never happened before in previous Ubuntu versions. I do use many commands but prefer a GUI for certain tasks and visualization of my work since my system has the resources to spare. Running Lucid Lynx

Networking :: Connection From FTP Client To PURE FTPd Server Fails At MLSD

May 13, 2010

I have a "friend" who hosts a couple of websites that I maintain. I have always used filezilla client to connect and update the files on the website.I lost access for a little while and he said that "The profiles had accidentally been dropped".He reinstated everything but now I cannot complete a log on session. I maintain several other websites which have the same PURE FTPd server at their end and I can connect to these OK.The delicacy of the matter is that, with no changes at my end, and my other sites working, logic suggests that something has changed at his end. I have very patiently worked through all his suggestions but to no avail.I can't suggest that he is at fault when he claims expertise in the field and I am a complete lamer when it comes to FTP.

I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to review the log on result below and see if they can throw some light on the situation for me.(I have anonymised the IP address and other information for security reasons)

Server :: How To Change Postfix Return-path

Nov 29, 2010

I just set up an internal mail server for my office using Postfix, Dovecot and Squirrelmail. It works great except for one tiny problem. When I send mail, I address it to user@myoffice (no .com, .net, etc) and it works perfectly. However, somewhere in my work, I screwed up and for whatever dumb reason put myoffice.net somewhere in there and now the return-path always shows up as user@myoffice.net instead of just user@myoffice. Does anyone know how to fix the return-path so that when someone clicks reply it goes to user@myoffice? I've Googled and searched here without finding my answer, apologies if it's out there and I've just failed to see it. Rest assured I have done a couple hours of searching before finally asking for help.

Server :: Run Firefox Or IE6 SP2 The Rows Return In About 9 Seconds?

Jul 15, 2010

We're currently running a web site on CentOS 5.5 running Apache - Tomcat - Mysql. A part of the web site runs slowly or it would appear to be.

The part in question returns records from mysql about approx 200 - 400 rows of data.

The first point of call was the SQL database we've managed to fine tune this. The problem I have is with IE7 and IE8 when I run Firefox or IE6 SP2 the rows return in about 9 seconds. I use IE7 or IE8 and it takes about 20 - 25 seconds.

Could this be an APACHE problem?
