When I watch any video on YouTube my screen will turn off (no HDMI connection) and then it will turn on after a couple seconds (10 -40 seconds). When I played Borderlands 2 the screen is completely fine.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI decided to update all the software on my computer. Fortunately, it upgraded kernel version 3.14 to 3.16. I was happy to learn that suspend now worked on my laptop by calling pm-suspend, but it did not worked by closing the lid. So I search and found on debian's website that installing systemd and adding some config lines in /etc/systemd/logind.conf would sove the issue. So I followed the procedure and did like instructed, to end up with a computer that boots on black screen.
The last verbrose line I see on boot up is "kvm disabled by bios" and then it shutdown down the screen. The computer works, as I can login and shutdown by doing those operation blindly.
I tried removing systemd but it still does not work. If I use the old kernel 3.14 I can boot without any problem, but if I use kernel 3.16, I boot to a black screen. I remember successfully booting in 3.16 before installing systemd.
I installed Debian 8.1 with iceweasel 38.2.1esr-1~deb8u1
Whenever I want to open a youtube fragment I do hear the sound but the screen just remains green. I already googled the issue but found no solution that works.
I'm using Debian Squeeze with Fluxbox and I'm having a problem with xscreensaver. I've set to blank screen after 10 minutos of inactivity, but the problem is that when I'm watching a movie, the screen is blanked after 10 minutes too. So I have to manually kill xscreensaver before starting to see a movie, or I have to move my mouse / press keyboard every 10 minutes to activate the screen again.
I've done some search before posting and I only found something about a SMPlayer's option named "Disable screensaver", but it is already on and it has no effect preventing xscreensaver to work. Here is a screen shoot of my SMPlayer configuration window:

Apparently, xscreensaver isn't being able to recognize that another program is running. Could it be related to dbus?
PS: I had a dbus problem when I first upgraded to squeeze, my multimedia keys stoped working in banshee (whenever I clicked to play/pause/next etc, another banshee process was started), but I solved it by adding this line to my ~/.xinitrc: eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"
I am wondering if it is possible turn off my display with a key of my laptop's keyboard. I mean if I press ctrl + o then my display turn off and then if I press ctrl + o my display turn on.
My system goes through slow periods where it just crawls and others where it's fine, but I'm wondering which service settings are OK to just shut off to give me a bit more oomph when I boot up.The others I'm pretty OK with like spam assassin, dictionary server and so on, but some of the others i wonder if they only serve to slow things down..Also..I live in a very dusty environment and I KNOW the fans and other parts get caked with dust and it wouldn't surprise me if the dust got so bad it just stops the fans completely so once in a while I use my air compressor to blow the crud out and I usually get covered myself, but how safe is using the compressor? It's not the type that typically fills up with condensed water droplets so that isn't a super critical issue..It's a small 1 hp deal, elect drive and so on.. Safe enough? It's all I have and/or can afford..

I have Lenny installed on an Imac G4, running command line only. It's primary purpose will be SSH.
I would like to know how I can turn off the screen when I'm not using it. It will be left on running other things for periods of time, and I want to save power. (and the screen)
Since the screen is built-in, it might have a similar solution to what I would do with a laptop. On the other hand, there are no shortcut keys to dim the screen like on a laptop.
Because it is command line mode only, I will need to know what commands to use to dim or shut off the screen, or to configure an auto-off time limit.
WRT "no flash youtube video"? OS is debian wheezy with iceweasel 31.80. I have completely removed adobe flash (I think). I have installed the html5 video everywhere addon, and have allowed youtube to set cookies. However, when I go to youtube and attempt to play a vid, noscript prompts me to allow googlevideo.com scripting. I am somewhat reluctant to use any google services, and am puzzled that youtube, which proclaims html5 as default (now), would need the googlevideo service? Note that I have removed flash because of its past insecurities. I guess the real question: "Does youtube (or iceweasel) really support html5?
View 11 Replies View RelatedIf I watch a video on YouTube, the browser crashes when I try to change to another webpage. Typically, the video will play through but a few have crashed midway. It always crashes on changing the webpage after a video starts (whether it finishes first or not). There is no error message. I have searched the forum for 'iceweasel crash' and didn't see anything quite matching my own problem. I did look at related posts and none of them solved my problem. I'm not sure if the videos are HTML5 or flash. Perhaps a mix of both.
There's no problem with browsing regular pages, even if they have video advertisements in a sidebar. This seems to only be happening on YouTube. I have turned off all browser extensions and plugins with no improvement.
I've searched the internet and seen where there was a security problem with Flashplayer a month ago and the symptoms (if hacked into) sound similar to what's happening to me but I am using the latest version of Iceweasel and this bug is supposed to be fixed.
My Debian install is only about a week old and was a clean install to a formatted partition. I've added a few minor apps since install but nothing that would effect this. I also installed nVidia's proprietary graphics drivers. I can watch dvd movies, MP4's, .flv files, etc with no problems.
System: Debian 8 - Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 280X Free Driver
With Iceweasel, when I watch HTML5 Youtube videos, I only have the quality 720p as the highest.
In the same machine, Windows 8.1, I can watch in 1080p in Internet Explorer.
I guess that it's not a problem of Iceweasel but about how Youtube serves the videos to my system. Is that correct?
I initially installed Debian Lenny on my system but couldn't get sound to work so I upgraded to squeeze hoping that the newer kernel would somehow fix that. Unfortunately, the update caused the screen to flash on and off starting at the login screen - I'd get a split second with the screen on and then it would go off for a second or two. The boot screen still allows me to boot from Lenny's linux kernel, and that still works. I also had this problem when I installed ubuntu on this computer so after some searching around I remembered that adding radeon.modeset=0 as a boot option fixed this. Now the screen no longer flashes, but everything is really slow - I think that disabled graphics acceleration? After some searching around it seems that these problems are probably caused by something called KMS in newer linux kernels but I don't really know.
Anyway, does anyone have any ideas as to how I could turn on graphics acceleration again without having the screen flashing on and off? Or suggestions for making sound work? I think in the past (on ubuntu) I ended up having to enable the proprietary graphics driver, but on the other linux distros i've tried I used proprietary graphics and flash and my computer got slower and slower and started to crash, so I'd rather stick to the open source driver if possible - i don't need really need 3d acceleration. Stability is the reason I switched to debian. And when I write ifconfig or iwconfig is displayed in the console interface wireless card.
And when I come in the panel on the network card, it immediately pops up a window that you can not load the network card modules.
I don't know what could have happened, I do not recall that I recently messed with the system.

When i turn on my monitor the screen goes blank, but the 'on' button is lit up. Any ideas of what the problem could be?edit: When i turn off and turn on my monitor, it displays what's on my computer for a couple of second and than the monitor turns off again.

I wrote y bash script that opens YouTube playlist using youtube-dl and VLC applications: the output of youtube-dl is the input of VLC. The only problem is VLC needs to be closed after each playlist item unless I get the error message of the operating system:
"ERROR: unable to write data: [Errno 32] Broken pipe".
I understand the reason but I don't know how to resolve it: it is possible to close previous STDIN of VLC without killing the entire VLC process so that a new youtube-dl instance can connect to the same VLC instance? For some reason, when I watch movies be it Totem Movie player or VLC player, and even if I leave my computer for a few minutes, the screen goes black. I have to giggle the mouse for the screen to come back. What could be causing this and how can I fix it. My settings are disabled. Is there anything else I forgot to check? I am using Ubuntu 10.10

Whenever I am not using the keyboard or mouse, the screen powers off after 5 minutes. When I am watching a movie. I cannot leave the mouse alone for after five minutes of watching the movie, the screen goes black. I'm not sure if the problem is my Nvidia card or Xorg or what. Any ideas how I can get a hold of this? Let me know what you need as far as diagnostic info. I actually have to leave for about 8 hours so.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been trying out the new Slackware 13.37 and I have found that KDE will crash anytime I am watching a full screen video with Firefox 4 and attempt to adjust the audio levels using the keyboard buttons. If I use the mouse to adjust the audio level through the audio mixer gui, it seems to work fine. Both of my laptops ( a Gateway MP6954 and a Dell Inspiron 1520) are exhibiting this same problem. Both have the Adobe Flash Player version 10.2.159.1 installed.

I am currently using it under the gnome interface but i also have the notebook version of it installed (probably because i got a notebook remix of it, not quite sure). All is well except for the following: after i power up my notebook, login and i can see the panel i plug the power cord in. And the my screen starts flickering in orangeblack colors. Nothing i do seems to take it out of this state but a good old hard-reboot.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I start my system on the Ubuntu 10.10 CDROM I get a tiny icon at the bottom, then the screen shuts off due to no signal. So I cannot run the Live CDROM. Relevant here is that Debian CDROM runs just fine. (Lenny installs and runs good, but squeeze does not) Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) gets me a pretty graphical welcome screen, then the monitor shuts off just like Ubuntu and Kubuntu.WinXP installed and runs without a hitch.
