View 4 RepliesSo I have Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit, and I'm having strange problems with parts of windows staying up on screen after I close them. Check the attached files to see what I mean. I have Visual Effects turned off, and I've tried removing compiz altogether, but I still see this happen every once in a while.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was running Ubuntu 10.4 netbook version (with Gnome) on my Dell Inspiron 910 and yesterday it told me there was an upgrade available, to Natty. I followed the links, did the download, and left it to install overnight. When I got up today, it said it had a problem, because an application was using a file it needed. I thought I had closed everything before I started the process. I acknowledged the message, and proceeded to restart.
I ended up with the standard 10.4 Ubuntu screen, but with no tool bars, status bars, or anything. Just the wallpaper. Keyring login came up and I signed in, wireless said it was connected. So it looks like things are working, just no UI as such. Poked all the screen edges with the mouse, but nothing popped out.
Ctrl><Alt><Del> brought up the logout screen, and if I clicked on Help, I could ultimately get Firefox to run. (Note: the Help screen talks about Gnome, but it had the new popout scroll bars).
If I hold down <Shift> on startup, I get the GRUB menu. I am running linux generic 2.6.38-8 , but I am not sure where to go from there. Running dpkg didn't help.
I cannot use several keys (1,`, q, a, z & Esc) on my keyboard.I have just installed Kubuntu 11.04, AMD64 version via Wubi. Everything went well w/o any errors. At 1st boot, I also logged in w/o errors, and then tried some apps for Office & Network and shut down. The keyboard was still alright at that time. However, The problem started on the 2nd boot after the installation. Those keys do not response in Kubuntu & Windows 7 login screen and even in my PC's BIOS setup.
My laptop model is Dell Lattitude E6410, core i5, Intel HD Graphics, WD HDD 160GB. And I installed on the other partition, not my Windows one.
when I move any window in unity it often goes full screen by accident.
Is there any way to disable this annoying behavior?
eg. grab a window, move your mouse (and the window) up until it touches the panel, and your window is full screen. This happens several times in an hour.. really annoying.
I prefer using F11 or double-click to archive the same thing. (doesnt happen by accident)
parts of my screen keep freezing and locking in place so that nothing new can be seen in that section, it happens when i click a menu or close a window, the part that freezes only goes away after i log out and then back in
View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to enable the top parts and the borders of windows in openSUSE to be partially transparent? If so, I'd be grateful if someone told me how. Like in this image, the top part where it says "Mozilla Firefox" and the border of that window are all partially transparent (yes, I know that's Windows, lol). I'm running 11.4 KDE.[URL]..
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed a fresh new Jessie (8.1) with the Cinnamon environment a few days a go, and yesterday I started seeing a strange issue seemingly happening at random.
I'm not sure what I do to cause this, but every few hours all the text and some of the icons (launcher, notifications and some applications) on the panel disappear. Most icons in the menu also vanish.
I've just noticed that some windows also disappear, but instead of showing the window behind them, I see my background image (see attached image).
I can't interact with windows which I can't see, but I can move and resize them (they have no border to grab, but alt+middle mouse works).
I can get around the issue by restarting Cinnamon (Alt+F2, r), but that works only part of the time.
Dmesg shows nothing (most recent message was plugging in my mouse & keyboard).
I'm running this on a Lenovo X201 (which uses Intel HD graphics QM57) and an external monitor (dual monitor configuration)...
I have LucidLynx installed on my eeepc 1005PE. I am currently using it under the gnome interface but i also have the notebook version of it installed (probably because i got a notebook remix of it, not quite sure). All is well except for the following: after i power up my notebook, login and i can see the panel i plug the power cord in. And the my screen starts flickering in orangeblack colors. Nothing i do seems to take it out of this state but a good old hard-reboot.
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhen I start my system on the Ubuntu 10.10 CDROM I get a tiny icon at the bottom, then the screen shuts off due to no signal. So I cannot run the Live CDROM. Relevant here is that Debian CDROM runs just fine. (Lenny installs and runs good, but squeeze does not) Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) gets me a pretty graphical welcome screen, then the monitor shuts off just like Ubuntu and Kubuntu.WinXP installed and runs without a hitch.

Last month, I agreed to install Ubuntu on my sisters Toshiba NB 305. Ubuntu was fine, but somehow installing it and GRUB hosed both the XP partition and the recovery partition. The Windows splash screen would appear for a second or too, and then Windows BSOD'ed.
I managed to coax the recovery partition into resetting the netbook, and told my sister to be happy with XP for the moment because I had to study for exams.
But she still wants her Linux. So I was wondering if there was a way to ensure that the installation would be OK.
When I minimize windows they completely disappear. Doesn't matter if its a program or my home folder, anything I open disappears when its minimized.I can run the system monitor and check running processes and they are still running. I just cant see them. All I can do is kill them with the system monitor.I can log on as another user and they work fine. It's just in one account. Is there a way to fix this, or to completely reset my desktop to the default settings? I know it's something I did but I can't find out where to fix it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have two monitors set up on my Asus N61J laptop, but have a weird problem:When I move the mouse to right-hand edge of the Left (Primary) screen, it disappears. To get it back, I have to either keep moving it to the next screen, or move it over something that will cause it to change shape. It also happens if I move it to the left-hand edge the Right (Secondary) screen. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this? It's a little annoying, as it makes it hard to select the Logout/Shutdown/Status menu

View 10 Replies View RelatedI've this problem since I started to play videos through the internet. Whenever the videos is on full screen, it makes not only to stop the video but sometimes it becomes choppy. Also, when I try to play a video and another one is still buffering.. The video I attempt to play is still loading until I close the another that's buffering.
I'm frequently using Google Chrome.
I for one find Unity not as bad as others. What I despise is that screen edges don't work any longer for me. Respectively corners. In the 'old' Gnome, I used to have full screen applications on the desktop; for example Virtualbox running something in full screen. Then I would have compiz set to expose all desktops by an upper left corner mouse event. Then I could easily click on another application to switch to it.
With the event of Unity, this doesn't work any longer.
Worse, the launcher doesn't pop up when I create a mouse event on the left edge in Virtualbox. So I cannot switch between Virtualbox and other applications any longer, except by un-full-screen Virtualbox in order to navigate. Is there any possible way, for example by setting, that the unity launcher overrides the present screen (Virtualbox) like it did before for edge events?
I have random lines near the top of the desktop, as seen in the image on the top right. The spotify app, under wine also shows the same lines that are quite annoying as they make it difficult to navigate.
View 6 Replies View RelatedSometime yesterday, I noticed that I couldn't turn off the computer using the indicator in the top right corner because of a glitch in how the clock is displayed. As you can see in the screenshot below, the indicator applet is hidden and I had no idea how to "refresh" the panel so that the indicator applet would show again. Although this doesn't happen often, I encounter this problem from time to time.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop. I'd like to be able to dual boot into Windows or Linux on my PC so I've installed in on an ext4 partition on a separate drive from Windows. The installation process ran smoothly and the dual boot functionality works as planned. The problem I'm having is that after logging in, the login window disappears (as does the options bar at the bottom of the screen), and then nothing else appears, just the mouse cursor (sometimes the loading icon, sometimes not) and an empty background image, no icons, no menus. It doesn't matter how long I leave it for, nothing ever happens from this point on. I am technical, however, unfortunately ,I'm very new to Linux (something I'd like to remedy) so I'm a bit stuck with what to try next.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using: ubuntu 10.04 64 bit proprietary fglrx drivers for ati 4890.
When shaking the mouse to bring up the computer, the screensaver will freeze and not display the dialog box to log back into my profile. However, even though I can't see it, if I blindly and correctly type in my password it will work.
[update] I posted this question while at work where I do not use Ubuntu...sadly. Anyway, when I got home, I locked the screen, the gl fish screensaver came up. bam, no login dialog box. ok, tried the gl matrix screensaver, bam, no dialog box. Finally, I tried a non-gl screensaver, and what do you know, there's my login dialog box. Something is up with the gl screensavers.
Just to reiterate, when I activate the mouse or keyboard during a gl screensaver I do not see the login dialog box.
I've got a cd from China. Wanted to open it with rhythmbox. For seconds I see the tracks (track 1 etc., instead of title) and then music brainz pops in suggesting me adding tracks to db... But the tracks are gone and I can't play cd then. How to get it to work?
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter I upgraded to Naty Narwhal (I'm using Ubuntu Classic, because my GPU cannnot process Unity) few days ago, Opera began to hide both menubar and disable its own control bar (not sure how should I call it - the close, minimize, maximize thingy). View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been using a kubuntu 10.10 till last week when it could not complete do-release-upgrade, so I downloaded kubuntu 11.04, specifying that I did not want my /home partition to be formatted, and went ahead with the installation. I used ext4 under 10.10 and selected ext4 again for 11.04, yet when I first rebooted after the completion of the installation, I could not find any of my files in that partition (except a newly created user home folder with the same user name as the old one). But when I looked at du -h, it's 92% full. I know I have set the mount point correctly, so it shouldn't be a fstab problem. What I should do to recover the files?
View 6 Replies View RelatedIt all started when I couldn't set up my Unity bar to touch only and not the slide across for the dock. I tried installing Compiz, but it failed so I uninstalled it along with Unity and reinstalled them both. What I am looking at now is a panel-less desktop with only my background and 2 files on my desktop. Also, when I bring up the Change Desktop Background, it has no top bar consisting of the X Minimize or maximize buttons.
