I have an old laptop (Acer TravelMate 350TE) which I would like to turn into a router. So, I downloaded i386 - Small CD and installed to that computer. Setup finished, system restarted but computer stuck at grub screen. A menu comes like this:But neither enter button nor arrow keys are working. How can I solve this ?
View 4 RepliesI installed Ubuntu 11.04 today as the main OS on my laptop.I had deleted my XP partition, and repartitioned it according to a guide I had found. (http:url)......Basically it was setup like this: 500mb ext2 primary partition, has the grub folder, I believe this is either the '/' partition, or the '/boot' partition 2gb swap space logical partition
10gb ext4 logical partition -- this is either the '/' or the '/boot', it contains the 'bin,boot,cdrom,dev' etc folders 243gb (the rest of my hard drive, with the exception of a partition that contains documents and files from my XP OS, formatted to NTFS) ext4, this is the one that has all my desktop/documents/etc folders.After Ubuntu was done installing, I had some message pop up about installing an ATI proprietary driver for my ATI graphics card (an ATI Radeon HD 4330, I believe, I may have messed that number up). I installed it and rebooted, no problem.
Next, I had another update window pop up with 198 items checked and ready to download and install. I went through all of this, and rebooted, again, no problem.Next thing I did was install some apps that were essential for me to have to use for my work (an ide, chat programs, etc). No problem with any of that.Last thing to install was the OSE Virtualbox, and then I installed WindowsXP Pro and Windows Vista Business, then installed the guest addition addon for VB. This all worked without any issues whatsoever.
Time goes on, and I notice my computer is heating up much more than (seemingly) normal. I begin to wonder if its my graphics card. So I shut down the computer and let it cool down. Reboot, and no problem, still working fine.Then I opened a couple of apps and tried a simple game (can't remember the name) I believe it was a simple 3d topdown, as I wanted to test my graphics card. This is where things seemed to start to go wrong. My laptop began hanging, not even allowing me to access the terminal via ctrl+alt+f2. The screen flashed and I saw the blue/green/grey fuzz that I get when the graphics card is starting to heat up too much. Then everything hangs and I can't do anything at all, including move the mouse. I did a hard reboot (I believe this is what you call pulling the plug/pressing the power button, correct me if I'm wrong). I then rebooted, saw a chkdisk, then it booted seemingly normal, but it hung right after the purple screen after the grub screen.
This is pretty much where I'm at right now. I strongly suspect the fault is with the ATI drivers, but have been completely unsuccessful in my attempts to fix it. I've googled just about everything I could think of, along with searching these forums. I've tried just about everything listed in the forums, but to no avail.I've tried the commands that are supposed to purge the ati drivers, but all I get are errors that say they can't remove the 'virtual drivers'.
Right now I'm booting off a live cd, so I know the computer still works fine, just not my actual installed OS. I'd really like to get the issue resolved without having to reinstall, as it took quite awhile just to get it usable in the first place, but this has already taken so much time, I may just resort to that if we can't solve it any other way. Got too much work to catch up on as it is.As a re-instated note, perhaps if you have any tips, but not particularly about fixing the OS, my laptop (I'm strongly guessing my graphics card) is heating up much more than normal, compared to that when XP was installed. Is this more than likely just a driver issue, as is the rest of it? Also, I did have Compiz installed, though I didn't choose for it to be installed, I believe it came pre-installed. I've heard it could cause some issues, though I have no idea as to the validity or relation to this particular issue.

I just remembered while searching for a solution, I found a post somewhere that said something about the information not being sent to the monitor from the graphics card properly, thus no desktop. I'm guessing that'd still fall under the driver issues, but again, I'm unsure. I would think that wouldn't be entirely true anyway, since I can still see my mouse fine, just no desktop, only a black screen.
I recently partitioned my hard drive so that I could have Linux in addition to Windows Seven on my laptop. For some reason, at boot it it showed not only Linux, a Recovery mode for Linux, and a Windows 7 OS, but also a Windows Vista OS that I never installed. Yesterday, A friend of mine borrowed my computer and chose to open Vista. Since then my computer has been stuck at the grub rescue screen with nothing other than the message: error: no such partition grub rescue>
View 9 Replies View Relatedmy computer is currently stuck in "Grub Rescue mode" I don't know how to get it unlocked. I tried installing the latest ubuntu from wubi after I deleted the partition for 11.04 beta I had already had (I had some issues with 11.04 so I went to windows (it's a dual boot machine) and cleared the partition) After I got rid of ubuntu from there I don't think it automaticlly got rid of grub, which I was unaware of. So I continued to go through Wubi for to install 11.04 side by side Windows and to be used with the windows loader.
After I got thorugh all of that stuff I was instructed to restart my computer (as usual) and I did. But as soon as my computer came back on it came into "grub rescue>" with the error message at the very top of the screen "error: no such partition." I am currently using a different PC to type this. I would like to know how to get out of the rescue loader and at least back into windows (I have windows 7). I don't care to much if I can make it into Ubuntu as I have most of my more important files on Windows. I'm kinda scared atm, because I read somewhere earlier that I can't really do anything unless I have the windows boot disc, which I don't.
I am new to Ubuntu and I am running v10.10 through VMPlayer on Windows 7. I wanted to run the updates through the Update Manager. After downloading them and installing them, my VM rebooted and has not worked properly ever since.
When it boots now I get a screen which has my computer name "jason-virtual-machine" and its just frozen there. I tried the "recovery mode" but that does not boot up either.
What happened and what can I do to fix this?
I thought I'd have a go at putting back sysvinit to run the start up daemons, after I discovered that upgrading to jessie removed it and slapped on systemd.
I didn't have any problems at all with systemd, infact it was pure speed at start-up, but after some reading I thought I'd like to go back to usual start-up scripts.
What I did was to boot a Live Debian and mount and chroot into my Debian system, then I ran

sudo apt-get install sysvinit-core sysvinit sysvinit-utils
On reboot, I hit a grub rescue prompt which says error: file not found.
Trying the methods to get that sorted out gets stuck with "unknown file system" after I use ls and ls(hd1,msdos2) -as well as other combinations - it only seems to work for a plugged in flash drive.
Then I chroot again and run update-grub and grub-install /dev/sdb but reboot still stops at grub rescue.
So I wonder, firstly, why replacing systemd mucked up grub. Then, besides re-install of systemd, how do I get a booting system?
I'm new to the world of linux I've started using it just one week ago.I installed Debian Lenny without problem, and after 2 or 3 days managed to make my wifi and ATI card to work. Today I tried installing compiz, through the packet manager that comes with the system. It was downloaded and installed successfully, so I rebooted to see it effects (I guess) but after that, I wasn't able to get to the login screen anymore, it just gets stuck at the "gray" screen before that (I took a pic of what screen i'm talkin about). Then I accessed in console mode and removed all the compiz packages, tried dpkg-reconfigure gnome and gnome-core, then reinstalled the ati drivers, but the problem is still there.I don't want to reinstall the whole system, I don't think a simple problem like this is enough to do so, but sincerely I'm completly lost.
View 14 Replies View RelatedIt happened when I updated my php5.4 to 5.5 version on my small Debian 7 server. I am only getting GRUB right after BIOS boot pass, then none of the keys working even C or Shift buttons to go to command promt except CTRL+ALT+DEL.
I have tried rescue mode with live CD, selected myserver/root/ partition to install GRUB but not worked.
How to recover my server, I have some important data in it and I don`t want to destroy them.
I am having a re-occuring problem with Grub. The problem seems to occur about once every 15 or so times that I start up. Basically, it gets past the Samsung branded screen but before it goes to the Grub screen, the computer will restart - it just continually gets to this point and restarts until I shut down with the power button. The problem is easily fixed by re-installing Grub using an ubuntu CD. Things will then run fine for about a week and the same problem will occur.

Well I can't use my PC, both of my operation systems are non-functional.Windows get stuck (which is something completely typical for Microsoft stuff) on Windows logo screen, or safe mode loading files..Debian installation is messy.Firstly I installed Debian 6.0 on a Virtual DVD Disc mounted. I followed the installation process strictly and move forward to Debian startup.It asked me for account. root as "username" and the password as "password" didn't work so I logged in as "localhost" normal user.
However.. I started to realize that I actually also had to install the Graphical Environment in order to have Debian with the desired GNOME Desktop.. I went to aptitude to install the Graphic Environment Package but it said that I have no root rights.. I tried to log-in again, using the correct details but failed.I tried to get in, using the sudo command, but the sudo command also didn't work. Of course.. since I can't install packages, I can't either install sudo."su -" or "su" also prompt me to select a password which I apparently have no clue of.
Then I went to Debian Recovery, because there I was logged as root. It also pointed out that "Root Account is locked". I went to install packages finally.. But when the installation started to proceed It asked me for disk insertion in a specific folder?There I got lost completely.
So I have 2 ide hdds but whenever they are both connected, grub gets stuck at GRUB loading stage 1.5. how can I resolve this problem?
both are Maxtors with ext4 fs. primary is 20 gb and secondary 80 gb.
Jumpers are set to cable select.
Boot order in bios is correct. (primary first, secondary isn't in the list at all)
another post about this. I just don't know how to handle this, as I'm pretty nsee the grub loading menu, but screen just freezes after, no way I can reboot, or open a console. In recovery mode I can log as root in console, though.I run Debian 6, 64 bits. I have an intel q6600 and a nvidia geforce 9800GX2.

The specs aren't the greatest (Pentium II processor, 94 MB RAM, and an 8 GB HDD). I chose AntiX 8.0 as my OS. Anyways, I got through the installation just fine, but when it said "Try rebooting your computer without the CD"...So I did, and what happened? I got that error. I've tried rebooting with different Live CDs to no avail. Is there anything I can do to get back up and running?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed another Linux distro, Kali Linux, alongside my Debian 8 and discovered to my chagrin that my computer boots to Kali's grub rather than to the Debian grub. I had spent some time customizing Debian's grub and would hate to see that effort go to waste. Is there a way I can get my computer to boot to Debian's grub instead? I tried deleting Kali's boot partition with gparted but that did not seem to do anything.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed debian server on a custom built intel computer, with a 2.5 ghz dual core processor, 3 Gb of ram and a 500 GB sata hdd, I had originally installed debian server to use it as a web server, but for some reason after a few hours it completely freezes, mouse wont move I cannot connect to the webserver or ftp server, I restarted it and it will do it again, it isnt a specific amount of time it just does it randomly sometimes it will take 2 hours another time it will take 2 days, anyone know what could be wrong, I am quite new to linux and am not sure exactly how to view logs and such.

I was unhappy with the lock screen on Xfce so I removed xscreensaver and wrote a short custom locking script, which basically involves using i3lock along with some additional commands to make things pretty. I was able to change the default locking behaviour by modifying /usr/bin/xflock4 to run my_lock.sh.
Unfortunately, no lock screen appears whenever I suspend ie after waking the computer from suspension I don't need to type a password in. I would like to force Xfce to lock the screen with my_lock.sh before actually suspending, but I don't know how to do this.
I know that Xfce runs Code: Select allxfce4-session-logout -s when suspending, but xfce4-session-logout is a binary file which I cannot edit.
I updated my server via SSH from another computer. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my old laptop. I updated it at the 1/3. But now i experience problems! Since the update there where Radeon driver updates which made Ubuntu not to load X. [URL] You can see the update @ 1/3. The computer is a HP 6715s. As I can remember there is a Radeon X1250 in the computer. How can I get the old version working again without reinstalling?

I just loaded up the Ubuntu 10.04 onto a newly scratch built computer. It went to the desktop after loading up and asking for my password. I then navigated to SYS>ADMIN>DRIVERS and preceded with download of recommended drivers for Nvadia G430 on-board display adapter. Restarted the computer to activate the new drivers and it's stuck in Command Line Mode. I tried Ctrl/Alt/F7 to escape, along with a bunch of other things but nothing will kick this puppy into the desktop.
View 4 Replies View Relatedmy Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed a new graphic card after my old one started to go belly-up and it works nicely in X with twinview. The card have one VGA, one DVI and one HDMI. I have the monitor connected to the VGA and my projector connected to the DVI. However, when I boot the monitor (VGA) don't receive a signal. It is dead until X comes up (and when X comes up it does exactly what I want, it uses the VGA monitor as the main screen).
I had this setup on my old card to and it worked fine. Grub and boot console showed on both screens and I never had to tweak anything to make it do this.
how to enable the VGA outlet, either have boot enabled or only the VGA enabled (either way is fine by me but I really want to see Grub and the boot console on startup).

I was deleting some space off my C Drive and I believe I may of accidentally deleted Fedora, or some of it! I have a dual boot with Fedora and Windows XP so when I started my desktop up it would load into fedora by default or I could press a key to load XP! (It rhymes!) Now, however, it instantly loads up into "Grub"
And that's it! Run, Or Exit, or anything really, doesn't work! Except Reboot! So I'm a little stuck. It's an old PC and the Windows XP disc is long gone, if I ever had one! I had this thought that perhaps if I reinstall Fedora from a CD it many bring back the old command prompt and let me get back into XP again? Or, is that crazy talk??
I lost power during my Ubuntu update and when I powered back up ubuntu was broken. Now the stupid bit. My hdd was partitioned into 3 bits, vista os, data, and ubuntu. In vista I deleted the ubuntu part and merged it with the data part. Now when I power up my computer it goes straight to a black screen that says...

Got the network settings set up, tried to open firefox - nothing, wouldn't load. went into update manager and started updating the software. View 9 Replies View RelatedI currently have a problem where when xubuntu is restarted using the power button, it will prompt the user with grub asking which selection to boot (xubuntu recovery or xubuntu) this feature itself is fine, but for some reason there is no timer, which means that unless you hit enter, it will always be stuck on the GRUB selection screen. I am wondering if there is any way to change this, is there anyway to enter a timer into the system so no matter what, after x seconds it will boot xubuntu?

I am able to boot from a flash drive and have run the boot script. This laptop did not have a dual boot system on it but it did have windows on it at one time, converted to ubuntu.
