When installing Debian, I had to left out 2 windows partition because I originally thought I could install Debian into Windows C: drive. Then I knew I had been wrong. After I moved the data of the 2 partitions out of the hard disk today, I want to merge these partitions into the linux file system.Is this possible without a reinstall? How can I do this?
View 7 RepliesLibre Office can be removed from Ubuntu 11.04 without making a mess of an installation but when I began ot attempt the same with Debian I was concerned it would take too much necessary stuff with it requiring a fresh install. I use Abiword and don't need Open Office. Can it be removed somehow cleanly? How would I do this? I partly want to do this as there seem to be a lot of Open Office-related Updates which is waste of my Mobile Broadband limit.I am using Debian 6.01, 64 bit Gnome edition.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Debian testing system on a laptop that used to have Windows 8 on it. I kept the EFI boatloader and its partition, but now every time the system boots, it first tries to boot into Windows (which isn't there anymore). Removing /boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft just leads to an error message when booting, with some component of Windows still trying to load and not finding those files.
The workaround for now is to go into the UEFI boot menu on every boot and selecting the "debian" entry, which works but is a bit cumbersome.How can I get rid of the Microsoft loader completely? I find a lot about repairing or re-adding the Windows bootloader, but nothing about removing it.
I like to install Redhat linux 7.2 but want completely remove window xp. How to do the partition since there is only one hard disk on the PC?

Depending on whether I launched it with gnome do or the main menu I got a different 'version' of spotify, I could tell this because it had different searches remembered. I tried removing wine and spotify and gnome do via synaptic and completely remove and then the option to remove configuration files left over. I did a search and there were loads of wine files left so I just deleted. When I reinstalled wine, spotify and gnome do the same problem occurred.
Also Firefox started crashing ubuntu, just freezing it, so I tried to uninstall completely, but when I restarted it kept the same add ons and still crashed. So I uninstalled again and tried to delete all firefox folders but I can't work out how to do it as root.
I've reached a point in my Slackware journey where I feel confident enough to remove my Mint 10 linux. It used to be my 'go to distro' when I trashed my Slackware installation. Now, I have Slax on a USB and I think that is enough.Mint 10 occupies /dev/sda5 (root) and /dev/sda6 (home) while Slackware occupies /dev/sda7 (root) and /dev/sda8 (home).If I delete the /dev/sda5 & /dev/sda6 partitions, can I very safely resize /dev/sda7 and /dev/sda8 to use the space freed up?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded to Jessie and everything seems to be OK apart from printing from a windows machine to my print share. This was working previously under wheezy. I can print a test page from Cups without any problems, but when I try and print from windows, Samba seems to crash completely and is constantly writing these messages to the logs. Then I lose access to the other shares, presumably while it repeatedly crashes.

I'm currently dual-booting Squeeze & Windows XP on a machine i use frequently.
In my experience on the desktop, i now see no reason to have Windows XP as a boot option, & wanted to try & avoid a full re-installation of Debian in order to remove XP (merging it's partition with / ).
I have a checklist that i put together, but wanted to be sure this was all correct before going forward.
1. Perform full back-up of all data.
2. Boot into Debian, through GUI -
System Tools > Disk Utility
- Select HDD (80GB Hard Disk)
- Select windows partition ( /dev/sda1 )
- Format /dev/sda1 to Ext4 Filsystem
3. Boot Live CD
- Use gParted to extend /dev/sda2 (was 38GB, will extend to 78GB)
4. Remove XP from the boot menu.
( Note: My ~ folder is on the same physical drive as / (same volume), but i actually store all Media on a separate physical drive which is formatted in NTFS. I plan on reinstalling XP using a virtual hard disk, & sharing that with the virtual machine.Here is a screenshot of my Disk Utility - [URL]
I recently downloaded and installed and updated Debian squeeze. Its a dual-boot machine and the migration process is going to take its own time. In the interim, I want to look at the ext4 partitions through windows. I know/knew about ext2ifs fs-driver.org but somehow I'm not able to view the ext4 partitions even though they show up in Control Panel as ext2ifs drives.
If you guys know of any other softwares which can do the same work or better please lemme know. I also tried something called ext2explore but that one crashes all the time around. Lastly, does somebody know which is the best way to be in the know of Squeeze development and the milestones within it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

Last time I re-installed Windows after Linux I ended up having to re-install Linux again afterwards as well, because I couldn't recover it (seemingly due to complications from encryption). So this time I'm wanting to plan and avoid that.

As there is a "Microsoft Reserved" partition and a separate Microsoft directory within the EFI partition, if I just go ahead and reinstall Windows will it install it's boot loader/image to one of it's own partitions? And NOT affect anything else like Grub and other Linux things?
Logic tells me yes, but there seems to be many issues on the internet about installing Windows after Linux.
My primary concern is whatever happens with Windows or anything to do with dual loading etc, is that Linux will still just boot, or I can get it working again without much hassle.

How these work. It is possible I've set them up wrong, or with redundant partitions, but both systems have been booting ok for months.
I'm running Debian Squeeze AMD64 with full disk encryption and LVM. After reinstalling Windows 7 I lost GRUB from the MBR. I managed to install GRUB after following this guide and using an Ubuntu 10.04 graphical installation disc, but I only get to a GRUB CLI when booting, so I can't actually choose an OS there.
I tried following this guide but I'm stuck after "# Mount the partitions to /mnt/root" and don't know what to do.
Does anyone know how I can fix GRUB so I get to choose between Debian and Windows 7 there?
I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had Windows. Installed Linux 10.04 over it. I want to switch back to Windows. When I pop in my Windows XP disc I get and error after it loads a bunch of stuff. I tried booting from m 10.04 disc, going into Disk Utility and changing the file system to NTFS no luck. Tried burning another copy of XP and still same error. Now I burned a copy of Windows 7(desperate times call for desperate measures) but its on a DVD-R instead of a CD-R and every time I try to boot it, Linux just boots.

Often, when presented with a nautilus window, and asked to drill-down to select a file, the window will not completely open, leaving the 'Open' and 'Cancel' buttons invisible below the lower gnome-panel. I will then have to click the maximize button, to get the window to fill the screen and make the 'Open' and 'Cancel' buttons visible. This also seems to happen with some of my apps...
For instance, I never have this problem with Firefox, but I always seem to have it with Ubuntu-Tweak, and some other apps. This 'appears' to be happening randomly, although it could be related to 'inode-meta-data' about the window state not getting updated.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been running openSUSE 11.4 for a while now and this issue is starting to get more and more annoying, as well as more frequent. Sometimes when I open an application, GNOME doesn't spawn the window but it will still capture mouse events and completely block the top left of my screen. It isn't until I log out and log back in that everything is back to normal.
It's like it starts up the app but just doesn't render the window. It started to do this with the terminal but now it's doing it with other apps like Totem. I am running GNOME 2.32.1
When I minimize windows they completely disappear. Doesn't matter if its a program or my home folder, anything I open disappears when its minimized.I can run the system monitor and check running processes and they are still running. I just cant see them. All I can do is kill them with the system monitor.I can log on as another user and they work fine. It's just in one account. Is there a way to fix this, or to completely reset my desktop to the default settings? I know it's something I did but I can't find out where to fix it.

I had windows 7 installed in my 4th drive and windows vista as my boot drive. I formatted my windows 7 drive using vista and installed ubuntu 10.04 in its place. But still, when i update grub it shows windows 7 as one of the operating systems and my vista OS has been renamed as Windows 7. Please help. How can I remove windows 7 from the list, while i update grub.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi installed the new ubuntu on my system as a side by side installation, i've been using it for about 2 weeks now. ported over or found linux equivalents of any applications and games i use onto my ubuntu partition, and now i've decided i want to have ubuntu use the entire drive and just delete windows! The problem is, i'm not sure if i can do that I shrank my windows partition half a gig and booted lupu (the ubuntu partitioner wasn't even showing this half a gig of free space) to see if i could just extend my linux partition (in the case that this did work, i was just planning on deleting my windows partition and just extending my linux to the full size of my drive). I really want to avoid a full reformat of the drive because i have customized my ubuntu a decent bit and i don't want to have to redo all of that (not to mention the data, but i could always back that up on an external hdd). Here is a screenie of gparted: i don't really know too much about partitioning. so is there any way to remove windows and give linux the rest of the drive without having to completely reinstall ubuntu?
