General :: Moving Data From Computer To Windows Computer
Jun 28, 2011I have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network.My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

Jul 8, 2011So, first of all, this is my sisters computer so I am not sure exactly what happened. I had installed ubuntu alongside WinXp a couple of weeks ago. Today she booted into xp for the first time and accidentally launched some system restore option. A dialog box appeared and told that if she continued, everything on her disk would be erased. apparently, there was no indication of how to not to continue, so she shut it down by holding the power button.
Now, it won't boot. Not even to grub, it just cycles where the screen comes on, a courser blinks in the top left, and then it automatically restarts after about 5 seconds and repeats (unless one launches BIOS configuration). I assume something about the MBR has gotten messed up. I tried booting off a USB thumb drive, but it just accessed the drive for a second or two, and then went back into the cycle (I tried every USB socket, and the BIOS was configured properly to boot off external USB, also, I was able to boot my computer from the USB)
how to proceed if I can't even boot off of USB. Oh, the computer is Asus Eee pc netbook (no CD drive).

Jan 13, 2010So I'm in need of VM'ing a couple OS's to keep from repartitioning and dual booting my desktop. The first I'm trying to boot is a 64bit version of windows (have XP and 7 disc, trying XP for now) as I need to convert some of my work's ancient programs that still use DOS functions.
I choose Virtualbox over VMware just for the sake of VB being in the repos. Install and initial config went fine, but when I try to start (run) the VM the screen goes black, then the computer completely stops responding and needs a hard reboot. Pasting what I believe to be the error part in the log. If you need the entire log I can email or host it - too big for a post. Kernel Version - 2.6.32-trunk-amd64. Debian Sid

General :: Delete Protected Windows Executable Files Via System?
Oct 26, 2009I use Ubuntu 9.04 exclusively on my own machines, but I have a couple of flash drives that got infected by some corrupt windows executable (*.exe) files, probably by somebody's trojan (they are Cruzer 4GB so came with installed fancy programs that I dont need but didnt remove and Windows keeps installing unwanted ini files and other trash every time I use them in somebody elses machine or in an internet cafe). I deleted quite a few files, but some are stubborn.
$ sudo chmod +w-X doesnt seem to work. How do I unprotect and remove them? The filesystem is vFAT.
I suspect the files were created by some kind of a trojan as my work requires my flash to be pretty promiscuous.
When I 've backed up all the good files I need, I'd be happy to reformat the flash drives as straight vanilla data storage and retrieval, provided I can still use them on a variety of machines running MS windows as well as on my Linux machines. Any guidance on reformatting?

The disk will not start up, if I restart and try to boot from load i just sits there and says boot from cd. The disk drive plays music cd's fine, so i dont really know what the issue is.

Feb 13, 2010I'd like to have my Linux box (a QNAP TS-210 NAS) send the order to go to sleep (or hibernation) to my main Windows 7 computer.As the NAS is running Linux, I can't use psshutdown from SysInternals' PsTools. Is there any Linux equivalent? Or some "magic packet" that can order the Win7 computer to sleep.I know I could install a SSH daemon and trigger a shutdown command from the Linux box using ssh, but ideally I do not want to install anything on the Win7 computer. I tried booting from m 10.04 disc, going into Disk Utility and changing the file system to NTFS no luck. Tried burning another copy of XP and still same error. Now I burned a copy of Windows 7(desperate times call for desperate measures) but its on a DVD-R instead of a CD-R and every time I try to boot it, Linux just boots.

Often, when presented with a nautilus window, and asked to drill-down to select a file, the window will not completely open, leaving the 'Open' and 'Cancel' buttons invisible below the lower gnome-panel. I will then have to click the maximize button, to get the window to fill the screen and make the 'Open' and 'Cancel' buttons visible. This also seems to happen with some of my apps...
For instance, I never have this problem with Firefox, but I always seem to have it with Ubuntu-Tweak, and some other apps. This 'appears' to be happening randomly, although it could be related to 'inode-meta-data' about the window state not getting updated.
