I am having the following problem, and it has been persisent over several distros.
Often, when presented with a nautilus window, and asked to drill-down to select a file, the window will not completely open, leaving the 'Open' and 'Cancel' buttons invisible below the lower gnome-panel. I will then have to click the maximize button, to get the window to fill the screen and make the 'Open' and 'Cancel' buttons visible. This also seems to happen with some of my apps...
For instance, I never have this problem with Firefox, but I always seem to have it with Ubuntu-Tweak, and some other apps. This 'appears' to be happening randomly, although it could be related to 'inode-meta-data' about the window state not getting updated.

How do I completely delete the Windows partion using GParted in Ubuntu? I heard that the boot option for Windows still shows even after deleting the partition using GParted
I had Windows. Installed Linux 10.04 over it. I want to switch back to Windows. When I pop in my Windows XP disc I get and error after it loads a bunch of stuff. I tried booting from m 10.04 disc, going into Disk Utility and changing the file system to NTFS no luck. Tried burning another copy of XP and still same error. Now I burned a copy of Windows 7(desperate times call for desperate measures) but its on a DVD-R instead of a CD-R and every time I try to boot it, Linux just boots.
When I minimize windows they completely disappear. Doesn't matter if its a program or my home folder, anything I open disappears when its minimized.I can run the system monitor and check running processes and they are still running. I just cant see them. All I can do is kill them with the system monitor.I can log on as another user and they work fine. It's just in one account. Is there a way to fix this, or to completely reset my desktop to the default settings? I know it's something I did but I can't find out where to fix it.
I dual boot with Ubuntu and Windows, and I just about an hour ago upgraded to 9.10 from Jaunty. After I restarted my computer two versions of Ubuntu could be booted, Windows was not on the GRUB menu. I am new to programming, and am completely clueless as to why this happened, and how I can fix this.
When installing Debian, I had to left out 2 windows partition because I originally thought I could install Debian into Windows C: drive. Then I knew I had been wrong. After I moved the data of the 2 partitions out of the hard disk today, I want to merge these partitions into the linux file system.Is this possible without a reinstall? How can I do this?

I have an 8GB PQI USB stick, which has been giving me a hard time lately. Sometimes a file can't be read, other times uploading files to it gets stuck.
I was thinking about reformatting it completely, probably even erase the partition and create it from scratch?
I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 available. What should I do with the USB stick to "restart" its life?
I had windows 7 preinstalled.Then I created 10GB space for ubuntu-9.04.Somebody tried to restore windows 7 completely on my laptop.As a result Now following error occurs

aftter I booted my Ubuntu today I was wondering why my Desktop was empty (my icons have gone) and the Ubuntu theme wasn't the same as before.It started opening many windows (about 100 or so) called "Startet File Manager".These windows come and go (i think randomly but Im not sure)
After running for a while, often after starting a program that displays graphics, such as Shutter, Gimp, Ocular, or maybe simply having previews in Dolphin (as some of my folders default to large previews)most menus, and some windows will go completely black. I've been running openSUSE 11.4 for a while now and this issue is starting to get more and more annoying, as well as more frequent. Sometimes when I open an application, GNOME doesn't spawn the window but it will still capture mouse events and completely block the top left of my screen. It isn't until I log out and log back in that everything is back to normal.
It's like it starts up the app but just doesn't render the window. It started to do this with the terminal but now it's doing it with other apps like Totem. I am running GNOME 2.32.1
I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. The problem is that very often, when I move the mouse without clicking any button, a lot of multiple windows (trash, add to panel, or other applications) are suddenly opened.
I have switched to Opera because my Firefox eats my CPU and makes everything go slow (it even makes my music lag!) when I have a few tabs open or try to scroll on a fairly big site with pictures and flash stuff.
These problems are completely gone with Opera, but I would like it to behave more like my Firefox does. I use multiple workspaces all the time, so it really bugs be when Opera insists on opening new tabs in the window already open in another workspace. That takes away some of the point with multiple workspaces, if I need to drag opera along all the time. Making it show in every workspace is not an alternative, since I try sorting different tasks to different windows.
What I tried was to add the -newwindow flag to the opera launcher. This works, but however, I have to open the first tab manually (duh!) which is kind of unnecessary.
So how do I make Opera open new windows WITH a tab when I use the opera shortcut launcher? And if someone could throw in how I can make a startpage open instead of the ballot screen, it would be nice!
Im having a problem with firefox. I left firefox running overnight yesterday only to wake up to a totally unresponsive karmic. Everything was frozen and i couldn't get anything to run. I restarted the ubuntu and everything seemed to be ok until I tried to open firefox. Almost immediatly the first window opened it was followed by what looked like fifty more. It kept opening windows until ubuntu crashed. I restarted karmic again and did a couple of google searches using opera and found out that it might be a adware problem. I have thought of getting rid of my cookies but i do not know whether that will help.
I have another thread going about my issue but i have go no responses so i have been trying to fix it myself so on my journeys i thought it would be helpful if i could open my .disk files so i can access the logs so i can see what errors im getting. other thread is [url]
Every time I start Ubuntu, to enable copying files, I open two Nautilus windows and I then have to drag those windows into the places on the desktop where I'd like them to be. It seems silly to manually do this 800 times a year! Is there any way to automate this? Would a script be able to achieve this?
I am using the latest version of ubuntu(10.04 LTS) Desktop edition 32Bit. My problem is, after I open the firefox browser for first time after booting, a chain of new firefox windows start opening one after the another. In a matter of few minutes, there are like 15-20 instances of the browser opened.
I reinstalled the OS, but it is happening again and again. Is there some flaw in OS, something related to OS not compatible with my computer or some problem with the keyboard where some key(combination) is in a "press" mode (however, I dont see that happening on Laptop, the keyboard looks fine, plus Windows XP is working just fine).
This problem is forcing me to spend a larger time on Windows (which is bit cringy, after you get used to Ubuntu!).

Have installed Wine - version 1.2.3-Oubuntu1-ppa2-maverick1(wine1.2) from the Ubuntu softwear center . Downloaded windows executable PAF5EnglishSetup.exe which is a Genealogy softwear program from a trusted source (familysearch.org) .
However , when i attempt to open with Wine Windows Program Loader i get the pop up window saying the file is not marked as executable then reference to "executable bit" . I then see the following:
"You should only mark a file as executable via the file permissions if you know what you are doing." I do not know what i am doing . Therefore , reluctant to go messing with something i am not familiar with but i really need this softwear installed .
i installed the new ubuntu on my system as a side by side installation, i've been using it for about 2 weeks now. ported over or found linux equivalents of any applications and games i use onto my ubuntu partition, and now i've decided i want to have ubuntu use the entire drive and just delete windows! The problem is, i'm not sure if i can do that I shrank my windows partition half a gig and booted lupu (the ubuntu partitioner wasn't even showing this half a gig of free space) to see if i could just extend my linux partition (in the case that this did work, i was just planning on deleting my windows partition and just extending my linux to the full size of my drive). I really want to avoid a full reformat of the drive because i have customized my ubuntu a decent bit and i don't want to have to redo all of that (not to mention the data, but i could always back that up on an external hdd). Here is a screenie of gparted: i don't really know too much about partitioning. so is there any way to remove windows and give linux the rest of the drive without having to completely reinstall ubuntu?
Is there is a way in compiz to open all the minimized windows in the taskbar? Since I want to use the "scale" feature in compiz for all of the windows. As what you already know is that, the "scale" feature only works for the open windows not the minimized ones. So I want a way to open all the minimized windows with a shortcut(using compiz or any thing else) and then use the scale feature again.
Having an issue with the new distro. I can't stand the new default UI (too cluttered) and don't currently have the time to learn how to customize it the way I want it, so I've reverted back to Ubuntu Classic.
I've now noticed that I cannot move or resize windows. If I try to click and drag on the title bar of a window, nothing happens. If I try to resize a window using the mouse, the mouse cursor will change to the resize cursor, but beyond that nothing will happen.
I've also noticed that some windows, like terminals or the "Shut down the computer" window are completely missing the title bar.
I have some text files (Just plain text files, not OpenOffice files or anything) and when I try to open them in Windows they are all one line. I think I read somewhere that Linux uses for new lines whereas Windows uses or something... I am using Kate to edit them, and I have a LOT of files to fix so...
Upgraded to 11.04, tried Unity for a month but hated it, reverted back to Gnome today, now I have no wobbly windows.
I've enabled WW in CCSM and all the settings are defaulted. I've tried removing all traces of Unity using synaptic, but it just doesn't seem to have made a difference.
I've read a few threads about this, but so far haven't seen a fix other than "it just started working", so any pointers or ideas would be great as it hasn't just started working for me.

I'm a photographer and use Windows to run Adobe CS for most of my photography tasks, but sometimes I need to do editing in Ubuntu, the environment I use on a daily basis. However the image editing/manager programs I use just don't seem to work properly in Natty, so even for a quick RAW edit of one image, I end up pulling my hair out whilst in Ubuntu:
RAWTherapy - Refuses to load folder contents after clicking on them - Once I got as far as opening a RAW file, and then RT crashed. I've never been able to open up a RAW image since then
Digicam - Managed to open folder contents and selected a few thumbnails but when trying to upload to flickr, it crashes
Flickr Uploader - No option to create a new set (OK, maybe not a Unity issue but annoying all the same)
Any Upload Window - when trying to upload an image to flickr, or to my blog, I cannot view my images in thumbnail view. So if I am searching for a specific image to upload I can only do so by image name. This is ridiculous. I have attempted to flag this up in a past thread and did not receive a response on this. Since this is the one action I do the most, I get constantly frustrated with having to open Nautilus, learn the image name, then locate it when in the upload window. - When uploading to flickr the upload window increases to about 150% width of my screen, so I have to horizontally scroll to the 'upload' button after selecting my images
Thumbnail View - Loading up image thumbnails in Nautilus is painfully slow. Windows is much faster. - Increasing the thumbnail size to 200% is useless. It is not 200% of the original image size, but just 200% of the thumbnail. I can't view any larger than this 200% figure. Useless. - When viewing thumbnails in Nautilus, it doesn't double up column view as I reduce the size of the thumbnails, they remain in just one column irrespective of the thumbnail size, culminating in loads of white space either side of the thumbnail
The Gimp - I'm not going to slag The Gimp off because I understand it is an on-going project supported by just two developers and they have done a marvellous effort. It is very different from Photoshop but this is digressing from my main issues.
With these fundamental flaws in Unity/Ubuntu, I end up booting up Windows and working in my Adobe Creative Suite instead, which is a pain when I want to edit just a couple of images.
I was always led to believe that Linux was 'faster' than Windows but from my experience it is not the best environment for image editing. Nautilus is much slower than Windows Explorer and Digicam is a ridiculously complicated file manager on steroids. Adobe Bridge runs far fast in Windows 7 than Digicam does in Natty, which surprises me. I was recommended RawTherapy but this was by a Windows user who clearly doesn't experience the basic problems I have been running into whilst in Ubuntu.
Do any other photographers have these issues, or any others for that matter? More importantly, are there any work-arounds to these problems? I'd be interested to hear from serious photographers (editing and managing up to 1,000 images a month) who spend a lot of hours processing and managing their photographs. I don't know of any other serious photographers who use Linux: they all use Macs or Windows.
I have a multi-head system (three monitors). Using KDE 3.6 I was able to specify that new windows were to open on the monitor on which the mouse cursor was located. I don't recall where the setting was configured but I can't find anything like it in 4.3. Is there somewhere I can set this option or is it no longer available?
Some windows programs won't run after I have installed them with Wine. They either won't run or they make the screen go to a black painting screen (screen goes black and you can paint over it with your mouse to make the desktop reappear). I have tried changing the windows version and made no difference. I have even tried opening it in a virtual window and made no difference (Window opens then closes)
