Ubuntu Installation :: Remove Windows And Give Rest Of Drive Without Having To Completely Reinstall?

i installed the new ubuntu on my system as a side by side installation, i've been using it for about 2 weeks now. ported over or found linux equivalents of any applications and games i use onto my ubuntu partition, and now i've decided i want to have ubuntu use the entire drive and just delete windows! The problem is, i'm not sure if i can do that I shrank my windows partition half a gig and booted lupu (the ubuntu partitioner wasn't even showing this half a gig of free space) to see if i could just extend my linux partition (in the case that this did work, i was just planning on deleting my windows partition and just extending my linux to the full size of my drive). I really want to avoid a full reformat of the drive because i have customized my ubuntu a decent bit and i don't want to have to redo all of that (not to mention the data, but i could always back that up on an external hdd). Here is a screenie of gparted: i don't really know too much about partitioning. so is there any way to remove windows and give linux the rest of the drive without having to completely reinstall ubuntu?
I would like to completely erase my hard drive and install Ubuntu 10.04 on again fresh. I think some files have become corrupted from a power cut that I had last night whilst the laptop was plugged in (and turned on).
I'm not bothered about completely wiping the hard drive since there are no important files on it (at most there are just a lot of packages I downloaded from the repro...) I don't have any Windows installations either - it's just a simple; wipe the hard drive and reinstall all over again case
So in essence, my drive has become a cluster of random partitions, multiple Ubuntu installs, and random windows systems. It's gotten so bad that on my entire 250gb system my main Ubuntu install only gets 40gb of memory. Could anybody give me a step by step guide to do the following:
1. Completely wipe and departition my disc. 2. Install Ubuntu from a backup .tar file 3. Install a 40gb windows 7 partition
I know the install is diffrent for 10.10 so figured removing would be diffrent as well. but im wanting to remove ubuntu and give back the partition to windows. i love ubuntu but i am a photographer and find myself in windows to use photoshop and the many plugins i have so much that at this point i would rather just have the extra space back for windows. and once i get a new desktop for photo work my laptop will be back on ubuntu!
I had Windows. Installed Linux 10.04 over it. I want to switch back to Windows. When I pop in my Windows XP disc I get and error after it loads a bunch of stuff. I tried booting from m 10.04 disc, going into Disk Utility and changing the file system to NTFS no luck. Tried burning another copy of XP and still same error. Now I burned a copy of Windows 7(desperate times call for desperate measures) but its on a DVD-R instead of a CD-R and every time I try to boot it, Linux just boots.
I want to install Ubuntu Karmic Koala using only 12gb of space for the os itself and the rest of my hard drive for free space. How do I do this? I do not have any other os on my computer at all and I do not have access to any other os.Right now my ubuntu installation is taking up 72gb of my hard drive. I have barely any free space.
I am running 10.10 on a Samsung n130. Occasionally my wifi adapter locks up, everything looks like it is connected but I cannot connect to the web. I have worked out that removing and re-installing the windows driver brings it back to life (a restart also works). What I was wondering is could it be possible to create a script that would carry out the removal and installation of the driver with one click of a button.
I dual boot with Ubuntu and Windows, and I just about an hour ago upgraded to 9.10 from Jaunty. After I restarted my computer two versions of Ubuntu could be booted, Windows was not on the GRUB menu. I am new to programming, and am completely clueless as to why this happened, and how I can fix this.
When Ubuntu Software Centre removes software, it leaves files behind in File System which is owned by Root preventing me from deleting them.
1. Could this be why Update Manager is insisting that I install updates for software that I have removed and do not use?
2. There is one application I would like to re-install because it asked me technical questions before I installed it. I think I gave the wrong answer and when I re-installed it, it didn't ask the question again. It seems likely that there is a file somewhere that Ubuntu Software Centre didn't remove, and I could do with deleting but is owned by Root. How do I do this?
3. Should I have posted this query under 'Absolute Beginner Talk?'. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx.
I want to install new php so i need to uninstall previous version of compiled php 5.3.3. make uninstall is not working showing make: No rule to make target `uninstall'. Stop.what should i do to remove previously installed php completely so that i can install a new one??
The driver has crashed X and before I had a chance to find RPMfusion instructions on dealing with initrd, I removed the package just to keep X running.Uninstalling the package does not restore kernel and Xorg operation. I am still in VESA mode.Although they claim they don't put stuff in non-standard places and use RPM, still there is something left over, as nuoveau driver no longer loads.Now that system configuration is all over the place, it is not clear what they actually changed or replaced.
I installed flashplugin-installer in my ubuntu netbook remix, i found out that it couldnt play net videos. I have tried to purge it inorder to install adobe flash player but it is not going away. this is the message i get:-
I had Kubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP on a Dual Boot. I upgraded using the update manager to 9.10. (I know, I'm a fool.) The Kubuntu install stated freezing hard on startup, just after the GRUB OS selection screen, at a blinking cursor and otherwise blank screen. I'm pretty sure 9.10 will work great from a fresh install, but the live cd freezes after main Kubuntu boot screen and even Windows live cd only shows Windows partition. fixmb, fixboot, bootcfg etc. do NOT replace the grub as desired.
How can I remove Namoroka (3.6.12pre) and reinstall firefox? I already tried the sudo apt-get purge firefox-3.6 but to no avail. Can anybody tell me what the ppa packages just are? Is it correct that they are Ubuntu specific packages for optimizing applications for Ubuntu?
I am actually facing a vague problem here. I was previously running Windows XP and Ubuntu . Ubuntu was installed Windows XP The problem is
1. First I tried to do some disk partitioning. That ended up with some error.
2. Ignoring that, I went to install Windows 7 over Windows XP but I was not able to proceed with Windows 7 , because the partitions were corrupted.
3. So I used Ubuntu LIVE CD (Grub was lost at this point )and used 'testdisk' and recovered the partitions.
4. Now installed the Windows 7 successfully.
5. Now again I moved to Ubuntu Live CD to write the GRUB. After which I tried restarting
6. Now Ubuntu is booting perfectly as before. But the problem is with Windows
7. The GRUB loader instead of showing Windows 7, it shows Windows XP !!! . and there is no other entry for windows. When I tried opening it, it says "error, cant read file" and further inout moves back to the grub loader list again.
"How do I change the entry to Windows 7 from Windows XP and boot Windows7 successfully " I tried it a couple of times, same thing happens . So how to change the entry?
It's not a bios limit. I have dual boot with 98se so it's a fat32 not ntfs like most guides talk about. how do i get xubuntu 9.04 to see the my 98se partition i know it's /dev/sda1 but, then again isn't the whole hard drive /dev/sda1 i only have 1 hdd since it is a laptop.
When I boot into Ubuntu, I can see my Windows partition, but I can't see everything else that is on the second partition (where Ubuntu is installed), all I see is the Ubuntu root. Can anyone shed some light on how I can view the rest of my files? Ubuntu is installed on D: drive and windows 7 is installed on c:
After two years worth of trying to get HDMI audio working on, what should be, a MythTV box I am now fed up to the teeth with it. Utterly, completely sick and dissilusioned with Ubuntu & HDMI. Firstly there is no problem with the hardware as I managed to get HDMI audio working using the original install of 9.04. However the sata DVD drive didn't work. So I waited until 10.04 and upgraded after which the DVD drive worked but HDMI audio didn't. So after a couple of months worth of trying everything I could find in forums etc. I gave up and waited for 10.10.
Months later and after installing 10.10 not only does HDMI audio not work but the soundcard details shown in "gnome-volume-control" now only lists a single analogue device whereas running from a 10.10 live CD I get a comprehensive list of available devices including entries SPDIF and HDMI. It's therefore obvious that something I've done in the huge list of things that I've changed has screwed up the audio configuration. And despite having reams of notes I'm in no position to find out exactly what as a) I'm not an expert in Linux audio (nor do I want to be) and b) there have simply been too many changes for me to keep track of.
how can I completely remove *ALL* traces of the current audio system and reinstall *EVERYTHING* related to audio using the latest versions ? I want to completely obliterate the current audio installation (including all configuration files, kernel headers, drivers, alsa, the wretched pulse audio etc. etc.) and start from scratch. I have already been through every sinlge HDMI related forum post and have tried everything so please don't suggest "make sure HDMI audio is unmuted in alsa-mixer" etc. as I've been there, tried that and am bored with it all. I want to completely nuke the audio system from orbit and start again. At this point I should say that I've already tried the following which didn't make any difference:

Or should I just give up and install Windows media centre ? Having preformed a trial installation of Windows on a seperate disc everything "just works" with perfect HDMI audio, perfect picture, DVB card working perfectly, DVDs Playing etc. etc.

If i go places > computer i do see a drive "250GB harddisk: 189gb filesystem"... I assume this is the free space mounted. However, inside that folder is "lost & found" with a x on it and i dont have permissions to write to the folder/space. I'm just looking for some advice on how i can use/access this free space. I have gparted live cd and i've tried several things but 2bh i don't know what i am doing.
my ubuntu install is running pretty well, but I need to boot into Windows 7 to print and convert some proprietary OneNote files.The trouble is that while my menu.lst shows a Windows option - and a few others, too, that don't seem to show up in grub2 - grub does not give me the Windows option. In fact, it seems to follow only the contents of grub.cfg.I have tried running sudo update-grub, and it does work, but does not resolve the problem.
I unplugged the Windows drive, during the installation of Ubuntu 9 (to make things easier). 2 separate drives. When installation was complete, I plugged the other drive back in (now both are plugged in). I went to the BIOS and made sure the Linux drive was the set to boot before the windows drive. The only thing that comes before that of course is the cd drive

I booted into linux after this and ran 'sudo update-grub'. The cmd was successful. However, when rebooting it does not give me the option to boot to windows. Why not? PS. If I go to Places (under GNOME bar), Then I can see (and mount) the windows drive. So it is accessible.
This is the error I get when using apt-get upgrade or package manager dpkg: error processing flashplugin-nonfree (--remove): reinstall it before attempting a removal.
I was having a problem where I had run keytool to generate a key but had entered some bad info. I tried to run it again but it said there was already a key, so I deleted keystore thinking it would regenerate itself. I ran the keytool command again but it says it can't derive the signature algorithm.
Anyway, I've tried to 'sudo apt-get remove sun-java6-jdk' then 'sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk' but it doesn't seem to put me back where I was from step 1. 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure' also doesn't seem to fix it. I think if I can completely reinstall jdk then I'll be good, but how?
I just uninstalled, did 'sudo apt-get clean sun-java6-jdk' then installed again. Still get the error: keytool error: java.lang.Excpetion: Cannot derive signature algorithm
I just install Ubuntu on a new computer I got, and set up LAMP. I started poking around in MySQL (more than I should have) and managed to break it. I've been trying to fix it, but I can't. I've done apt-get --purge mysql-client, but when I reinstall it it's the same thing. How can I reinstall MySQL (and PHPmyadmin) from a completely clean slate? (There's no important data on there)
I've installed open suse with no problems however I accidentally put my root folder on an external HD. I want to have my root on a partition of my main drive so I can continue to dual boot windows. Is there a way to move root so I don't have to completely reinstall and set up all my packages and stuff again.I assume to do this I need to use the installation disk again and fix it before boot up but should I partition my main drive first. I'm being intentionally cautious as there is data I'd rather not lose on there.
Installed Ubuntu 9.1 karmic koala in a dualboot with Windows XP to remove a virus from the windows drive. I think the virus was found but somehow I have done something to cause a invalid drive error message at startup. I read that gparted may by a way to fix this, but I don't want to do anymore damage.

I soon found out that Suse 11.1 would no longer boot from boot.ini (using bootpart) because the boot process now brings up PCLOS (in /dev/sda6) rather than Suse 11.1 sitting in /dev/sda5. No problem, I thought, I'll boot from the Suse install DVD, use repair, and away I go. Wrong. After grinding, it started mentioning about generating something for sda13, which is my last partition. NTFS! So I bailed before it got too far. I even tried "rescue" option on the DVD, command prompt, and grub commands to reinstall via "setup.
Then I tried to use Super Grub Disk (.97xx) to reinstall the PBR, stage 1 and stage 2 loaders. Didn't change a thing. So then I used Grub4DOS and got into my Suse 11.1 installation using this in its menu.lst: title openSUSE 11.1 - 2.6.27.45-0.1

Worked fine, and is now my (only) method of booting to 11.1. So obviously it's bypassing stage 1 and 2 files, using it's native Grub4DOS code. But then I tried Yast-Bootloader to reinstall Grub's files. No difference. Then I used the advanced part to "write bootloader code to disk" No difference. Even tried "propose a new boot scheme" (or whatnot) no difference. After looking at all this, I've come to the conclusion that the PBR code in sda5 is scraunched, and/or stage 1 code (although it's still the original date), or stage 2 (which definitely had a new timestamp of when I committed the fatal error by executing PCLOS's "install.sh".
So my question is this: How do I do a good COMPLETE re-install of Suse's version of the grub files? Because, for sure, grub commands like "setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0,5), and variations thereof, certainly aren't doing it? My reasoning is that I should make sure that all the boot files get restored/confirmed as "originally installed by Suse".
