Debian :: Can't Reinstall And Find Webmin In Debian 5 Using Apt-get

I'm new here and very new to Debian. I have a server with Debian 4 installed by anoter person and webmin was installed and running. I run a dist-upgrade to switch to Debian 5.
Upgrade completed successfully, as far as I know, except than Webmin stopped to work. Once logged in I got many error for modules/program not found. So I uninstalled webmin using "apt-get remove".
Now if I try to install it again apt-get tells me that (try to translate from Italian):

I tried also with "apt-get install webmin-core" but get the same message with only this additional info:

I need to reinstall my distro, MEPIS, but--mostly just because I feel restless--I'd like to try another Debian-based distro. It has to be Debian-based because I'm comfortable enough with apt-get that I don't want to learn another package management system; and I want to avoid Ubuntu and distros based on it, because I've long since decided I don't like the decreased user control in Ubuntu. What are my choices? If I want to leave MEPIS and don't want Ubuntu, I don't really know what there is other than Debian itself. I don't know if I feel like tolerating the supposedly greater difficulty of Debian, but I would otherwise expect to feel at home in it, since MEPIS is based on it. And does the Debian Project still make a version small enough to fit on one CD?

After installating Debian & webmin, webmin works fine at first time.
But when i reboot the server , and browser the page [url] It won't work again.

I am running a video script on my server and I am very new to running a dedicated server and commands. Most of our site was setup but other and someone has broke something and no one seems to know how to fix.
Here is the issue. We run a script that uses these requirements

Now our server guy ran a update inside webmin for debian and now our videos still convert but wont make thumbs. Here is what he did.
Now updating libsmbclient ..
Now the AVS script wont make thumbs and webmin still wants to do 3 more updates that get unmet dependencies errors. Here they are when we try to run another update.
Building complete list of updates ..
Now what we need to do is either undo the update he already did or maybe get the one its asking for now to work but not sure which one will fix our thumb generating problem? Here is the error in the log file of the AVS script.

I am trying to install webmin on my Debian virtual machine and it is not working.
Here is what i am following [url]
I ad the 2 lines to /etc/apt/sources.list I ad the key ok But when i do apt-get install webmin it goes through everything ok as far as i can see, except when it gets to " **initializing cache. This may take a while **Setting up webmin (1.550) ... " It is like it just stops doing anything, it just hangs there.
If i reboot and try "dpkg --configure -a" it starts at the same place "Setting up webmin" but nothing is happening.

I have just upgraded my Debian 4.0 box to Debian 5.0. The upgrade is ok and the version of debian is 5.0.6.
Webmin, despite all my efforts, is still displaying 4.0 and when I force it to 5.0 manually, it states: "Warning - Your system is actually running Debian Linux version 4.0."

I just put a new computer together. I took the hdd from the old computer (AMD 550) and put it in the new box (i3). Debian boots up just fine. My question: will I benefit from a clean install/will my new hardware be fully utilized with my "old" install of Debian Squeeze? I should mention that Debian was installed on the hdd while I was using the AMD cpu, then I switched to the i3. I believe the answer is reinstall, but am just looking for confirmation *_*

I installed debian with Root, swap, /home, /usr, /tmp, /var on separate partitions. Then my root partition hdd is physically damaged, so I have to reinstall. But how can I keep/remount those other partitions which has lots of important data(mainly webserver data and mysql database) back? Another thing to note is that I not only replaced the root HDD but also the whole desktop pc which is smaller pc so instead of internally connecting the other partitions(another undamaged Harddrive), I have to use USB adapter externally which seems to work just fine. But how do I "re-link" my partitions?

I would like to reinstall debian on my server. It runs a self-compiled 4.0 because of the SATA controller that was not recognized at that time and the only solution was to recompile with the driver. Now, I did a test with an empty drive with V5.04 and the controller is recognized out of the box. I tried to install again, text-based and graphical, but in both modes I have to repartition. Is there a way to reinstall without losing data/reformat/repartition, and if yes, can you point me in the right direction because google or searching the forum did not deliver any solution.

I have moved /home to it's own partition and all is good. Testing is on sda1 and /home on sda2. However a bit later I wondered what would happen if I had to reinstall testing, would I then have /home on both partitions?

I'm new here, I hope someone can help me get wireless working on my laptop. This is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C650-EZ1533 (Intel Core i3). The Toshiba site says it has "Atheros Wireless networking (802.11b/g/n)", but does not identify the hardware more specifically.
I installed Debian 6.0 from a netinstall disc, the version including nonfree hardware drivers. In the software selection I went with the defaults: only "Desktop environment", "Laptop" and "Basic system".
Now the GUI looks nice and behaves OK, and the audio, video, ethernet, and optical drive are working. However, I don't know how to configure wireless. It's probably my fault. I was installing and uninstalling file managers, trying to find one I would like better than Nautilus. When I went to uninstall one of them, a message in the package manager recommended using a command like "auto remove" or similar (I did not record it exactly). My understanding at the time was that this would only remove things that were installed because of dependencies but were no longer needed. However, *a lot* of things disappeard from the menus.
Now the only thing about networking in the menus is something about setting up a proxy. There should be some sort of network manager, right? Or an icon on the taskbar, maybe? But I don't know what package to install.

I started with a Pentium4 system with a FX5500 AGP card and now have a i3 with integrated Intel video (Auburndale). The new motherboard is ASUS P7H55-M PRO. The monitor is a Acer AL1916 (LCD) with only VGA input. I have been using the nVidia oprietary drivers installed the "Debian way" (Cf using a Debian stable stock kernel.I first renamed xorg.conf so X would start without one. Once gdm starts, the monitor says the input is not supported. So I tried reusing the old xorg.conf file, changing the "nvidia" to "i810". X then fails to start and shows an error of no screens found.Everything is fine in text mode; only X is not working.I have to get this fixed very quick or I might not get to use Linux at work anymore.

Debian 6.0 Squeeze (stable) AMD64.
At first the problem was that the old volume group (containing all logical volumes for both physical volumes) had the same name as the new volume group. I did a reinstall where I changed the name and ran vgreduce --removemissing debian which seems to have removed all logical volumes from the old volume group.
When I try to unlock the drive in Gnomes Disk Utility I get "Incorrect Passphrase. Try again." but I *know* it's the right password, and I don't get any error when changing the password so that seems to be possible.
I found the oldest archive in /etc/lvm/archive/ and manually edited it to remove any stuff about the old LVs and PVs. Then I did vgcfgrestore --file VG_backup.vg groupname. With the help of blkid I edited /etc/fstab and /etc/crypttab to mount the disk at startup.

After running wireless for years my system crashed, I've had to re install lenny and now what ever I try I can't get the wireless to work. I'm running Lenny, kernel 2.6.26-2-686 but when I start up it doesn't seem to be able to start the wireless, whatever I do from gnome wireless tools,

Working on an important project and feel hung up on. Anyway, I have Listen 80 and Listen 8100. For some reason my isp or something is blocking 80 even with port forwarding and an attempt at putting my server in dmz, though I'm not sure if my router can handle it. Anyway, from within the network I can use my routers IP and see port 80 forwards to my box, though from outside the network port 80 is a no go(finds no route to host). So I set up listening on 8100, and sure enough I can access it from outside the network, but it doesn't seem to have the same root as port 80 for some reason, because when I go to the page it says the requested url / (just a slash here like theres no rest of the address) cannot be found. At the bottom it says debian server port 8100 so I know its getting to my computer.

i'm used eeepc here the situation i've already install squeeze AMD64 KDE but i want to try using i386 gnome which is more friendly for my eeepc spec. problem is there other boot in my pc. i'm currently using win7, ubuntu 10.10 32 gnome, and ubuntu ultimate 64 gnome and i don't have external HDD.
Question is i want to remove all linux OS and keep my win7 is it ok if i'm using Gparted to delete all linux OS and then installing deb squeeze i386. my next project is to build portable server on eeepc.

I use Debian Stretch and I've installed it twice with the same ISO on the same laptop. First just to test a few things, then freshly installed it again.
The first time the wireless card was named wlan0 (as always for me, I've never had another name), the second time though it was suddenly named wlp3s0.
How did this occur and may I change it back to wlan0?

I use Jessie, with the Aptitude curses interface for package management. It seems that every time I successfully uninstall/purge a package (along with its dependencies), then the next time I try to install/uninstall anything else it wants to reinstall that package (and its dependencies). It takes several (I haven't counted) "don't install" instructions from me before it will forget about it.

I run a Squid 3 server that is acting as a web filter. It worked fine on Etch. The system stopped working properly due to two of the three SATA cables being bad. Before I figured that out, I tried doing updates. Since Etch updates were no longer available, I did a distupgrade to Lenny. Immediately, Squid stopped working properly. It would take up to two and a half minutes for it to respond to a web request and add it to the access.log. This was using the same configuration file that it was using before the update.
After I found the hardware problem, I did a clean install of Lenny. I used the basic squid.conf like I did on the previous system, only changing it to add my ACLs and because it wasn't saving an access.log to the default location unless I uncommented the path directive. Now, it won't respond to a request at all. Forwarding is enabled and the firewall seems to be set up correctly.

A computer upgraded from 7.3 to 8.2 suffered a number of stability issues which were traced to systemd having replaced sysvinit in this version. Worst of these was that instead of shutting down it just cut the power instantly, causing disk corruption. Basically, from what I can find out, this systemd component seems like it works OK on a completely fresh install but causes multiple issues if it finds its way onto an updated system. I found some instructions on reinstating sysvinit, which cured the issues.
However, on attempting to install the Brasero CD/DVD app via synaptic, I notice that this will force reinstallation of systemd as a dependency, even though it's been locked-out of updates. Luckily I spotted this in time and cancelled. You really wonder why a CD writing app would need to do this. I certainly seems rather naughty for any desktop package to be changing system startup code in a manner which could break the OS.
At the moment I'm not sure if it's the only app which does this -although k3b seemingly does not. Any thoughts on this gotcha, and how to prevent a repeat, other than being extremely careful when installing anything?

About 6 months ago or so, I got a new 802.11ac card for my laptop:

This one uses the broadcom-sta-dkms binary driver in module wl. Everything was working fine until a few days ago. I booted up the laptop following a power failure and the network was acting very strange. Upon connection to the network, I had network access for a brief period, then it went away. Network manager claimed to still be connected. The access point thought I was connected as well. No packets were getting through. After many cycles of trial and error, I found that upon each network connection (different network, same network, didn't matter) I could ping the router for about 30 - 45 seconds.
After that, my pings went unanswered. Using wireshark in monitor/promiscuous mode, I found that I was indeed not seeing any replies and no machine on the network was responding to my ARP requests. Inspecting the ARP cache before and after, I see the mac address of the router as usual up until a couple of minutes after the pings stop coming back. I am also seeing wireless activity from other machines on the network, but I think it was only broadcast activity I was seeing. This behavior didn't change with signal strength either. I saw the same behavior when I was 3 feet from the router as when I was 50 feet from the router. Wireshark didn't show any other activity that looked out of place to me.
I did find a work around. If I purge the broadcom-sta-dkms package (apt-get purge broadcom*), reboot (haven't checked if unloading the wl module is sufficient), install the broadcom-sta-dkms package, and manually load the wl module, everything works as expected. I'm not sure why the driver won't survive the reboot. I have had to do this each time I boot my laptop for the last few days. I'm not sure what might have changed as before that power failure I think I had a couple of weeks uptime and I do updates at least weekly. I think I remember seeing an update to the kernel come through at one point recently. I tried reverting to the previous kernel version but that didn't seem to do the trick.

I'm trying to reinstall Debian on one of my machines after an unsuccessful install of FreeBSD (it didn't jive with my ssd). Debian installations have never been a problem before on this particular setup before but now for some reason it won't get past the "Debian GNU/linux installer boot menu". The USB goes into idle mode and the menu does not respond to keyboard strokes. I've tried several debian images to no avail. Ubuntu seems to work just fine though but I don't want to install Ubuntu just because Debians having some problems. I booted ubuntu live and reformated the SSD I had tried to install FreeBSD on because there were no partition tables on it but that didn't work either. I'd like some expert input before I go do another `dd`.
