I could't find the 64bit Debian Lenny OS for Intel architecture.Hence I have installed amd64 and it is working fine.Does both intel and amd have the same 64 bit OS amd64 ?

Does it mean that my OS is then 32 bit and will be used to run only 32 bits applications ? I'm doing also software developments with gcc with my linux box. Using this os and the gcc tools, for this os, will my software only be 32 bits ?

There are also installed some standard packages but in the near future I'd like to install mysql server on the same machine. I believe that 64 bit system will be faster so I decided to change from 32 to 64 bit. how to migrate postgresql database from 32 to 64 bits. I have postgresql data dir on separate volume. Will it be possible if I just use it as it is now in new 64 bit system with the same postgresql server config files or do I have to dump data and restore it in new installation ?

View 11 Replies View Relatedi recently buy an MSI 770-45 motherboard with 4gb (2x2gb) Gskill 1600Mhz Ram. The CPU is an athlon2 x4 620, everything tested and working fine except i can`t get lenny or squeeze 64bit linux running because of kernel panics when creating ext3/ext4 partitions during install or running fsck on the system i installed on another PC and moved to this one. The boot shows a screen related to IOMMU problem saying must enable it in bios but no option related to it and no memory remapping also. The question is how i can get IOEMMU working with 4gb of RAM (if i remove one of the two modules everything is fine). I`ve tryed ioemmu=memapper/off/noagp/soft and any thing i found on the web, moving to test debian installation was my last hope really before starting to use the 32bit one, i am planning to add more RAM which with this version is just can`t be.

My problem is I can't login with the users in the sql-database, but for some strange reason, I'm allowed to loggin as anonymous. Unix users can't login either.

View 2 Replies View Relatedrunning Debian Squeeze (standard 32bit squeeze Kernels linux-image-2.6.32-5-486 and linux-image-2.6.32-5-686) happily without trouble on a 64bit capable Samsung laptop featuring an Intel T3200 Dualcore processor. However, when I try to boot using the squeeze 64bit kernel (linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64) the system proceeds through a few text lines immediately after Grub, and then performs a warm start.
The text output I get immediately after Grub look similar to the ones I get booting the 486 and 686 kernels, without any indication for the reboot behavior. The rebooting also seems to happen before any entry is written into the boot/system log files (logging is enabled). This behavior also occured when I first tried to prime the machine from the Debian squeeze install CD using the amd64 kernel. I'm generally happy with the 32bit kernels, but I'd like to use the amd64 support to do some Java compatibility testing for 64bit architectures.
The Laptop is a Samsung R510-Aura T3200 Delfina with the following Hardware and Setup (using Grub as boot loader):
- Intel Pentium Dual CPU T3200 @ 2.00GHz (see http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=37160 for details)

Maybe a strange BIOS-Setting that works with the 32bit kernels but not with the 64bit kernel? I've seen a post on here that indicates someone is running the amd64 kernel on a T3200 successfully, and the chip is definitely 64bit capable, so the reboot behavior is a complete mystery for me

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Debian Lenny via Hyper-V. I get to the point where it asks for the network card. For some reason it can not find my network card. I have a RealTek (RTL8112L PCIe Gigabit LAN controller featuring AI NET 2 built on motherboard).
For some reason it doesn't see it. My issue is if I continue without the network how am I getting the drivers? Unfortunately Hyper-V doesn't support USB. I guess I can try to burn to CD but not looking to waste a cd for 480k and not sure that will work as I only see a auto.sh and a couple other files under scr directory. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. This is a fairly new Motherboard/NIC so I do not understand why it isn't recognized. I know it cant have everything but Realtek is a fairly common nic.

i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).
i do have a strange problem get running php5 on lenny 64 inside apache2. i had installed it as all instructions on the web does: # apt-get install php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-cli php5-common php5-cgi
apt has enabled php automatically, so

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).
lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-
1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)
I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-
ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

I installed debian etch on my system. Installation done successfully, but when it boots up the X server is not starting and showing error. Note : It is perfectly working with debian lenny. Configuration : Intel DG41RQ ,1GB Ram ,160GB HDD.

I'm trying to install Debian/Lenny on a iBook clamshell. I couldn't seem to burn an install CD that the iBook would recognize, so I eventually copied the contents of the CD onto a self-powered USB drive and I can now get the iBook to boot off of that thru open firmware. However, when I get to the Debian installer main menu, it still won't read the CD, and apparently it does not have network drivers to install over Ethernet. Is there any way I can supply a driver for the ethernet interface (lspci reports that its a sun GEM ethernet interface) or somehow convince the installer to install from the content of the USB drive (which is a duplicate of what's on the installer CD)? Heck, if it'd be easier to get the Airport interface running to reach the Internet I'd be up for that too.
