Here is what i am following [url]

I ad the 2 lines to /etc/apt/sources.list I ad the key ok But when i do apt-get install webmin it goes through everything ok as far as i can see, except when it gets to " **initializing cache. This may take a while **Setting up webmin (1.550) ... " It is like it just stops doing anything, it just hangs there.

If i reboot and try "dpkg --configure -a" it starts at the same place "Setting up webmin" but nothing is happening.

General :: Fail Webmin Install - E - Package Webmin Has No Installation Candidate

Apr 6, 2010

I have had webmin running previously but i just recently installed Unbuntu server and i am now trying to install webmin. after typing this to install webmin sudo apt-get install webmin it started doing its thing and then it halts.

Giving me the following message: "Package webmin is not available, but is referred to by another package. this may mean that the package is missing, had been obsoleted , or is only available from another source."

The first thing i did after installing webmin was edit the sources.list

Then i tpyed sudo nano sources.list I uncommented everything with "deb" in front of it

I also uncommented

deb cdrom:

I then typed this sudo wget [url]

After getting that i typed this apt-get install perl libnet-ssleay-perl openssl libauthen-pam-perl libpam-runtime libio-pty-perl libmd5-perl

Then i tryed to install it and got that error.

I also tryed install it using this tutorial [url]

When i got to the part when i need to type

sudo apt-get install update this is what happened

Ubuntu Servers :: Webmin Dependency - Install Webmin On Edition 10.04 ?

Apr 3, 2010

I encountered a a dependency issue when trying to install Webmin on Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04 Beta1.

When you try to install webmin, libmd5-perl is not available in any of the lucid repositories:

I resolved the dependency prob by adding the following repository to my /etc/apt/sources.list: deb [url]

Then I did a sudo apt-get update then sudo apt-get install and libmd5-perl installed fine along with webadmin. BTW. I got a GPG error when doing a apt=get update because I did not import the public key for the debian repos I used to get libdm5-perl, which doesn't matter to me as I commented out the repos once I got libmd5-perl installed.

Debian Installation :: Cannot Install Squeeze Live DVD

Sep 15, 2010

A Linux user for about 10 years, distro hopping for half of them. Finally found peace with PCLinuxOS (great distro), and MintLinux. When Mint went over to Debian, I thought why not try the original, so here I am.Booted the dvd, checked everything was working well (excellently, actually), and started the install over an existing PCLinuxOS system (dual booting with XP). First time installed while inside the gnome system, from the desktop icon, second and subsequent times from the welcome screen after boot (only text modes were available). In all cases, everything goes fine until I partition and install the packages. Partitioning is no secret to me, unless there is a "Debian way" of doing it: went through "guided partitioning," and chose the existing PCLinuxOS partitions, 37 Gb for /, ext3 (tried ext4 later with same results), and 2 Gb for swap, both on sda (sda1 and sda5). This is a full hard-disk, just for Linux. The other disk is for XP (sdb).

Tried formatting existing partitions, erasing contents of disk, and keeping as is. In all cases, when partitioning is done, the system installation fires up and I see all packages being transferred (up to 100%). Then I have a pop-up window telling me to continue to package manager, which I do, but then I get a message saying that I am trying to install on an "unclean target," over an existing installation (even after fully erasing the disks). It asks whether to continue or not and, whatever I do, I'm taken back to system install again, and see the progress go up to 100% and the same question again.

If I go back to the install menu and ignore the message, jumping to installing grub, I get an error message saying that grub install has failed, and that's it. I can't progress further because of these error messages. If I ignore all and boot without the live dvd, I get a prompt and nothing else, and I can't even use XP. Basically, I'm stuck unless I install another distro again to have a working system.First searched this forum and Google to get answers to this problem, but couldn't find anything applicable to my case.

Debian Installation :: Install From Squeeze Live CD / DVD

Jan 2, 2011

I burned an .iso of a recent Squeeze Live DVD - KDE edition. I was checking it out but I'm not sure it's reliable for installing.I was wondering if anyone has tried it or could comment.I noticed a few things that was a bit disconcerting. One, there were a lot of 'question marks' in the kickback menu.Is that normal? Two, when you (I) try to reboot the system or otherwise 'leave' the live state, it doesn't reboot properly. Some distributions will 'shut down' and then give you a prompt for taking out your CD or DVD and then there is some script or program that reboots the machine for you. But, the Debian Live DVD I used didn't do that. It's a recent one, dated Dec. 20.What happened is that it just looped back and re-started.There was no prompt or even much of a delay. I couldn't open the optical drive tray at any time.I had to cold restart the machine so I could take the DVD out.

I was disappointed since I thought it is a good project and a worthwhile venture to try and have a live media option for installing the later editions of Debian such as Squeeze or if they can keep up progress, whatever edition it's at.I am a bit hesitant to try this version for a true install so I am wondering what others say.I thought I should go for the 'desktop Squeeze/Testing AMD-64-KDE' CD ISO instead? There's no live media but I have tried the live DVD so it looked okay other than the two issues mentioned.

Debian Installation :: Mount HFS During Squeeze Install?

Jun 11, 2011

I am trying to load Debian Squeeze from a net install CD on an old Wallstreet laptop. I am using BootX in OS 9.2. The problem I have is after the install gets to the bootloader section I tell it to continue without a bootloader, then open a shell so I can mount the Mac hard drive and copy the kernel and image file to the correct places. However, the Mac drive does not show up using df. I tried mounting to /dev/hda8 ( I know this is where the Mac HD is supposed to be) but get device not found error. I recall in previous version (etch) installing from full CD I had the option to install hfsutil, but I did not get that option with this netinstall CD. I changed the debconf priority to low hoping I would get more options of software to install but to no avail. Any ideas on how to get the kernel and image file to the Mac hard drive?

Debian Installation :: Install Squeeze On Triple-boot System?

Oct 28, 2010

'rolling' release as redoing install /upgrade every 6 months is getting 'old' My machine is triple boot

Hard drive is 320 GB
Windows 7 - 167 GB
Ubuntu - Maverick - 73 GB
Ubuntu - Natty - testing version - 65 GB

I do not want to screw up my 'grub' as it's been trashed a couple of times recently and had to re-install everything, which went great with install setting up partitions. I am not sure where 'grub' is installed to. I did install Windows 7 first then let installer split hard drive in half to put Ubuntu on then while installing my second Ubuntu, I let installer split the Ubuntu partition in half, hence the 167 GB Windows and the 2 smaller partitions for Ubuntu.I was thinking to maybe let Debian install over my Maverick install. Would that work and not mess up my Grub and cause me to not be able to boot and have to fix the drama?

Debian Installation :: Boot Hangs After Successful Fresh Install

Nov 24, 2015

System is hanging during boot after a successful fresh install via netinstall disk. Never makes it to any GUI or prompt. However, it does still respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL (not completely frozen).Default debian installation with one exception - KDE checkbox was checked for installation. Everything else was default, with "use full disk with GRUB" option chosen. The boot process appears to hang during the service starts. It appears that the start job for "Create Static De..." is not actually ever completing. I don't know how to troubleshoot that any further than I have.

This is running on hardware, it is not a virtual machine. 480GB SSD, i7, 16GB of RAM, AMD R9 390 (I dunno if this is the problem, but it seems a likely culprit). There are no other disks attached. I have verified successful memtest completions (0 failures) and hard disk is intact and working fine (I have swapped for another disk, and the same thing happens as well).

My skill level with Linux is relatively low. I have proficiency using it and programming for it, but not much in the way of troubleshooting/ installation/ drivers.

Here is an album of "screenshots" (phone photos) of the boot sequence in debug: URL....I tried booting straight to console by removing "quiet" from boot options and changing to "text", but it does not alter the outcome in any discernible way.

Debian Installation :: Fresh Install - Upgrade To Frozen Squeeze Distribution

Sep 2, 2010

Every where I look online, people are posting ridiculous non-working ways to upgrade their system from one release to another--they do not work for me and I need a definite expert reply. I am working with a fresh install of Debian Lenny/Stable and wish to upgrade to the frozen Squeeze distribution. Supplementing the word "squeeze" in place of "lenny" in my sources.list file does not work and believe this to be an inappropriate way of upgrading. I have tried upgrading apt, dpkg, and aptitude before beginning the upgrade process, cleaning dpkg cache, rebooting, etc.

After updating the above packages I tried all methods of upgrading: safe-upgrade, full-upgrade, and dist-upgrade. All produce dependency problems and try to remove the gnome-desktop package or upgrade everything else except gnome-desktop. (Other packages are also affected, gnome-desktop is the most important in this instance). As I understand it, when upgrading you can comment out the volatile repositories as well as the security updates, is this correct?--either way I have tried countless combination's off commenting/uncommenting to try to get the needed results. I do not want use sid repos or reinstall.

Debian Installation :: Computer Hangs After Install On External Hard Drive With Flashing

Apr 4, 2016

I have spend way too much time on this and it still fails. I installed the debian 8.3.0 AMD64 CD1 iso image on an empty external USB 1TB Western digital My passport Ultra. I use the graphical install method and the installation process of Debian appears to go fine, except it informs me at one point I am missing some nonfree firmware for something with wifi, but that shouldn't relate to this.

*FYI I put GRUB on the external hdd, sdb in this case.
*windows 7 is on the internal hard drive and I excluded it from the boot sequence
* using laptop lenovo t410

I reboot my computer and it hangs with a flashing - in the upper right corner. Never even gets to GRUB. For awhile I thought I might have partitioned something wrong, but I am now convinced that isn't likely. I tried countless number of different partition configs. Separate /boot partition and I also tried using guided partitioning.

I mounted the partitions of the external hard drive using another OS and GRUB appears to be there. So it is there.

I know some Western digital hard drives have added priopertary firmware crap, so I tried installing on a external Seagate drive and it still hangs. I tried installing linux mint on the Western Digital drive and it works fine!

BIOS settings fine. USB settings fine. I tried booting via the boot menu and moving the USB HDD to the top of the list.

I also tried installing with Debian Live on a USB, but that actually has more problems for some reason. I can never get passed the partitioning phase because it fails to create /boot or /swap partitions saying something about how they are still in use and another thing about how the partition table hasn't been updated in the kernal yet.

It seems I might be having this same issue, not sure: [URL] ...

Debian Installation :: Debian Squeeze On The Dell Mini 9?

May 22, 2010

This topic began in the Debian Development forum here I have successfully completed both the install and the after installation configuration. I have a fully functional system on this little baby, inspite of the fact that wireless (Broadcom bcm4312), ethernet (Realtek) and sound were initially broken.

There is a lot of assistance out there on the web. In the previous thread, I was having trouble installing any debian on a usb stick. The issues that needed resolving were 1. Bad stick

2. Incompatible kernels between boot.img and .iso

3. The method of copying .iso to the stick that finally worked was wget My first successful usb install was Lenny. Even though I upgraded the stock system with lenny-backports, I could not get wireless, ethernet or sound working the only connection I could get to the internet was through my 3g stick and that was not performing up to it's capability. I manually configured wvdial to get that working.

I attempted an upgrade to squeeze several times and each time the upgrade trashed the system. I finally found squeeze boot.img and .iso files from an eee pc blog. This allowed a fresh install of Squeeze and I was making progress. The little atom processor would not handle the b43-fwcutter driver, so I compiled one from the Broadcom site written especially for the atom processor. Now I had cable broadband supplied wireless. I got my ethernet working with help from the Gnome site technical specs on Network Manager. Simply changing ifupdown=false to ifupdown=true in the network manager config file.

Sound was activated by help from a blog entitled "Debian on the Dell Mini 9" My head is spinning now or I would be more specific and instructive on all I did to get this baby up and running. If anyone asks, I may do a how-to.

PS: Posted from that Dell Mini 9 running Debian Squeeze.

EDITED: Correction of typing errors.

Debian Installation ::Can Only Get To Command Prompt With Debian Squeeze

Feb 10, 2011

Debian Lenny worked just great. That was my first experience of Debian. The installer recognised all my hardware and the system was soon up and running brilliantly with a few tweaks. Confident of Debian's reliability, I decided to move to Debian 6 and did a fresh install, with downloads of the new operating system rather than a distribution upgrade. The installation routines have not worked for the same computer system. I don't know if its hardware not being recognised by Debian 6 that were recognised without a problem by Debian 5??

At first, the boot-up flipped at "Waiting for /dev to be fully populated," there was a kernal panic then Debian disappeared. No signal was sent to the monitor and I had to switch off the computer manually
I was able to look into the Debian 6 OS from Arch Linux, installed on different partitions of the same hard-drive. I am able to overwrite the Debian files as root from Arch.
My i686 machine has PATA IDE drives.

Why are 2) dbus and the 3) avahi-demon failing? I need to get them started first so that I can get an internet connection and try and correct the problem with X and the wrong Nvidia driver. Is there some configuration I can do either from Arch, where I am now, or the bash prompt on Debian? Thanks in advance.
