I guess this might sound strange, but, I want to be asked all the time for either my user password or root password. I have searched high and low and all I can find is people wanting to disable asking for password. My guess is a majority of those users are ex-Windows users. I prefer to be asked as I feel it an added security tool. how to enable the system to ask for the user/root password everytime?
I want to give my users option of logging to the system. They should have posibillity for choosing option betweend logging to the system with their default password or one-time password OTPW. I installed OTPW in my Debian. Here is my /etc/pam.d/sshd file:
I've tried Ubuntu, Arch, and most recently Fedora but the SUSE GNOME environment blows everything else away!
The only problem (so far) is that Network Manager requires you to enter your password every time you login to unlock the password keyring. I want to disable this.
I think some distros disable the prompt by using the login password to unlock the keyring, but I use auto-login (if that makes a difference).
Since the upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze on my Notebook Toshiba Satellite Pro U200 with Intel Pro/Wireless 3945 ABG I have wireless connection problems. The connection breaks time to time and sometimes cannot connect automaticaly after restart. BTW I didn't change anything on the wireless or network configurations on the notebook and on the wiereless router.
I have a Insprion 14R (N4010) and when I hibernate it will usually restore without a problem, but maybe 15% of the time it will reboot while loading. I would like to figure why, since I'd rather not lose anything... My swap space is 5.9GB, I have 4GB RAM (video uses 1gb, so I have 3gb usable)
How I can activate the one time password in Centos 5.3, I was looking packages but I can't find. Another server I have a debian and then the package name opie-server. In centos i was look opie,opie-server but nothing. Maybe the packag name different? What I must installed to used opie password?
Is there a way of altering the time between password requests. For example after I login there seems to be a certain amount of time before the screen blanks out and a new request for the user password is asked. I would like to increase the time substantially.
It seems that every time I use the 'sudo' command I have to type a password. Is there a way to get 'sudo' to remember the password at least for the current session after I use it once or something like that?
i recently switched to ubuntu 9.10 from win vista, i am having a problem... in ubuntu when ever i do any changes it asks me for my password, i know that its for my own PC's securiety but now i am really annoyed with this.
is there a way to edit which commands require a sudo? or some programs, like the CPU frequency monitor on panel, requires a password to change. where would i start if i want to change this?
I use rsyc for synching files that I type with a server and every time I have to enter the server's password. Right now in my .bashrc file there is an alias like this code...
but can't find such a thing in rsync or ssh man pages. Does anybody know what I should do?
I use Fedora 14 KDE spin, and I have a wireless network with 4 users. When I start my PC I have to enter the administrator password for the KDE wallet, and also the wireless password if I want to connect to the Internet. This is no problem for me, but I prefer not to share those passwords with the other 3 users. I selected the "Connect automatically" option in the wireless connection settings, but it still asks me for the password every time.
I am changing the password of a truecrypt file container. This takes around 1 minute. Why?
time truecrypt --text --change /tmp/user1.tc --keyfiles= --new-keyfiles= --password=known --new-password=known --random-source=/dev/null"
If I use strace I see that it basically does not do anything: it simply reads lots of random data from /dev/urandom (even if i specified /dev/null as random source) and finally changes the password:
Running Ubuntu 10.10 and I'm getting annoyed by the password authentication each time I want to do something. I find this more annoying than Windows 7 and UAC
I m trying to take a console of linux machine using putty. Whenever i connect to the machine and give password details to log into the machine it hangs for some time and then it allow the login.
I have an unreasonably long time to wait from log in, to when my desktop is ready, it takes 40 seconds from hitting enter to seeing my files on the desktop, and about another 15 seconds from then to hearing the opening jingle. It used not to be this way, before it took less than 10 seconds, but about 4 days ago this time shot up suddenly, is there some way to diagnose whats causing this delay?
It seems that karmic has changed the behavior of Gnome's cpufreqselector, so that it requires root authority to make changes, and those changes don't persist after a reboot.
Is there a way to make changes persistent? Is there a way to let admin users change the setting without having to enter a password every time?
i'm trying to get everything working ok. i have installed ubuntu using wubi and i've found that i can access my files on my windows partition from ubuntu. to do this i have to mount the disk and enter the password each time i boot up, and i would like this to be done automatically. i was wondering if this was possible? i put in a link directly to the music folder on windows into my 'places' but it only appears once i have put the password in. its not a huge thing, but its one of those things which would make starting up my ubuntu a lot more conveniant.
I have a Windows domain with a proxy. I have an account that can use the proxy and the URL that points to the proxy.pac file. this might seem a stupid question but can anyone tell me how do I enter the username and password for my test Windows account so that Debian can authenticate it?
hello i am trying to change my password, but when i type in the new password i get this:"The password is longer than 8 characters. On some systems, this can cause problems. You can truncate the password to 8 characters, or leave it as it is."my question is what kind of problem could i get and how can i change so i have to log in every time i start the computer?
Our Security Admin left the company and did not supply the Debian GUI passwords,o I cannot logon to the server using the GUI. However, I can log in using something like putty. How can I reset the gui passwords.
I've been using Ubuntu since 8.04 and I'm getting tired of it. Every time I update to the latest version, even if I wait awhile, something always breaks. I want an OS that I can update without having to worry about something breaking and I hear that Debian is great for that. I'll be installing it in a few hours when I get back from Iron Man 2. I just created this thread because I know I'm going to have questions. Don't worry, I'll try to solve any problems I come across myself before asking here. I'll be installing Debian Stable because I figure that'll be good enough for me.
By default, as far as I know, Debian hashes passwords using a single application of md5 and stores them in /etc/shadow. [EDIT: apparently true for at least some Debian 5.0.x Lenny installations. By default, Debian 6.0.x Squeeze apparently uses SHA-512 with a salt which is a publically known 8 char string. MD-5 is generally agreed to be much too weak to use for cryptographic purposes; SHA-512 is thought to be much stronger. Even better would be to iterate the SHA-512 "hashing" many times. See the last page for how to do this, and how to check that it is working.]
But the md5 digest/hash is said to be insecure; several years ago a double application of sha256 digest / hash was said to be much better. Is there a way to implement that in Debian Squeeze?
I have only one OS ( Debian 'Squeeze' 6.0.1 ) installed on this system. I observe a time lag which gradually grows. I was asked to install ntpd to prevent this from happening in the future and I did install it which seemed to work for a few days but now I observe the lag again. Just to note, I notice it only when I hibernate my system.
