I m trying to take a console of linux machine using putty. Whenever i connect to the machine and give password details to log into the machine it hangs for some time and then it allow the login.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having dual boot system Opensuse 11.1 and Windows vista. I have allotted about 5 GB space to home partition. Now sometimes I copy/move files from Windows partitions to /home, this is easily done. But when I restart the computer, It hangs and KDE is not loaded giving reason that disk is out of space. I have to work on commandline and delete some files from /home to free some space,only then I can restart the computer normally. This is very annoying.When I copy/move files then Opensuse should immediately give me a warning.It seems nonsense to not start kde.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an old averatec machine (3200 series) Slackware 12.2 is working fine out of the box (13.1 is not even booting after installing, so i decided not to work in this direction) except for the wireless. the wireless is working some seconds after putting the interface up, later stops working, and if you mess around a little with the interface, the computer will hang (caps and num lock will flash and thats all) I tried diffferents kdrivers (right now i downloaded the latest linuxwireless and im using those drivers) same situation. was working fine with kernel 2.24 and old drivers (the iface wass called ra0, right now is wlan0) I know this is not much information, but i will try to get another pc to make a ssh and beeing able to get some traces.

No key seems to work.I the do a hard reset and everything works just fine.As not to open another thread:- how can I see the Ubuntu splash screen? (currently I can see the Kubuntu one)- how can I turn the splash off and have it boot in text mode?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a VPS from Providerservice and I am their customer for over a year now. They've been great throughout the year. They had awesome support and awesome Network quality. I Host GameServers and since the last month, my Servers have been giving big lag jerks to all the clients connected. Like one big lag jerk every 5 minutes. When such a thing happens, the first thing I usually check is the Network. From 10 different machines, I did MTR traceroutes and there was not even a single packet that was lost so I was sure that the Network is not causing it. I observed my CPU usage, RAM usage, HDD usage and everything was normal but GameServers still lagged. Now today, I reloaded a complete new Debian OS and copied the Game Server files exactly from my other machines.
There was no extra program or software installed on the server, but that didn't help remove the Lag. So now I'm sure its not my VPS that causes it. Such a thing happened with me before. No Network packets were being lost and my VPS showed CPU/Ram/HDD to be normal. I asked my Provider and they said one of our user is spiking the CPU with a large number of SQL queries and that's why your lagging. But I talked to this company, they've checked their Host machine and they see nothing wrong with it. According to them, everything is normal at the Host machine. So we are short of ideas on what to do and that's why I'm here to take some expert opinions, the following things are for sure :
-> My Game Server files are exactly as I run on other machines without Lag and even on the current machine 1 month ago without Lag.
-> The VPS itself is not causing the Lag.
-> I've checked Network and no packets are loss, not sure about any difference between ICMP or UDP packets since the game is UDP.
The most probable thing is the Host machine itself. This usually happens when the Game Server falls out of resources and gets stuck.
I hopelessly tried to find answers for my problems but I could not find a single person complaining about this one: I am using a Lenovo G550 laptop (which has an NVIDIA graphics card) accompanied by a samsung screen using TwinView configuration. I have some special effects enabled and they all seem to work fine.
My main problem is: When I double click on the top panel in a window and maximize its size (it can be an application, a directory window or a terminal, anything..) on Natty, I sometimes can reduce its size back by double clicking on the Natty panel and sometimes this does not work! In times this does not work (reducing by double clicking again), I have to use the rectangle button in the panel in order to reduce it back. In times it works, I can simply double click on Natty top panel or left click on the panel, hold it, and pull it down.
What the hell can be the reason? I somehow observed a strange relationship between this behaviour and thunderbird but I am not 100% sure. Can anyone offer some help?
And another irrelevant question:
Is there a way to make the mail/pidgin indicator that turns green when a new message/mail recieved jump or move or do some action? Because when working full screen it is really hard to notice that thing going green. Previously on 10.10 if i'm not mistaken you could make the pidgin indicator jump high and low as a notifier. Is there a way in 11.04 to achieve this?

and Slackware is installed on 16gb partition with 10 gb free now.When i installed it was fine over a few days slackware is giving me high response time. while playing videos it is getting stuck firefox is giving bad responses and even konqueror.I heard that slackware is one of the fastest linux and is old hardware friendly right
One of my servers is displaying the error as login incorrect even after giving the correct password. Once I restarted the Virtual Machine and after that it is accepting the same password to login. I am not able to find out the problem, why the server is not able to validate the password until the virtual machine gets rebooted.

i do the following :
1. run ssh-keygen in .ssh directory of the user.
2. copy the id_rsa.pub as the authorized-keys in the root's .ssh directory
3 chmod 600 to the authorized_keys
4.restart the machine
5. login from the user and ssh SER ( SER is the entry in the /etc/hosts with the ip address of the machine)
6 It still prompt for the password

I am changing the password of a truecrypt file container. This takes around 1 minute. Why?

If I use strace I see that it basically does not do anything: it simply reads lots of random data from /dev/urandom (even if i specified /dev/null as random source) and finally changes the password:

I want to give my users option of logging to the system. They should have posibillity for choosing option betweend logging to the system with their default password or one-time password OTPW. I installed OTPW in my Debian. Here is my /etc/pam.d/sshd file:

The only problem (so far) is that Network Manager requires you to enter your password every time you login to unlock the password keyring. I want to disable this.
I think some distros disable the prompt by using the login password to unlock the keyring, but I use auto-login (if that makes a difference).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Karmic 64 bit installed, originally with 2GB of memory. The motherboard will take up to 16GB, and I decided to double to 4GB. When I put in the 4 memory sticks (1GB each) and reboot, it gets past grub2, to the ubuntu "circle" symbol, the screen blacks out and that is it. No desktop, no further action that I can tell from the box, just a black screen. The video feed to the monitor, from what I get with the power light is gone and no activity on the drive.
If I take out one of the memory sticks, it boots happily up with 3GB and runs fine. Put the 4th back in, same behavior. I tried swapping out the old memory, putting in the 2 new sticks, everything works fine. Add in the other two (the old ones), the problem shows again. I thought I might be the last memory slot, so I removed the one from the 3rd slot, works fine. All in all, it works fine with 3GB, but hangs on boot with the 4GB.
I recently installed VirtualBox 3.1.8 r61349 from the deb file virtualbox- .1_3.1.8-61349~Ubuntu~lucid_amd64.deb onto a recent clean install of Lucid Lynx on my HP p6210f (6144 MB RAM, AMD Athlon II X4 620 CPU). I then imported a friend's VM and tried to boot it. The VM consistently hangs with the following showing on the console (this is the last 3 lines, for context):

I thought initially it was a problem with my friend's VM, so I decided to create a new VM from scratch, and boot from a CentOS-5.4-i386-DVD instead, which I have done before with previous versions of VirtualBox. When I do that, I'm able to select my installation method (so I know it's booting from the CentOS ISO), and then it hangs at exactly the same point. I couldn't find any other mention of this problem, but it's a pretty recent release of VirtualBox - I think just days old.

Using the EPEL Repository, I went in and installed Cobbler to my DHCP/Gateway box.Everything went smoothly on the installation front. I went ahead and modified the cobbler settings file (/etc/cobbler/settings) to point to my server IP (same box), and then got tftp running properly. Now here's the problem.Normally, you need to run `cobbler check` to find issues and correct them. I run that, and all I get is blank. Nothing. It just hangs at the prompt until I kill it using CTRL+C.When I CTRL+C from the hanging, it states "cobblerd does not appear to be running/accessible"...

I've got the last Debian stable release, the amd64-DVD-1 file , and copy it to my USB stick, using win32diskimager, as recommended in the installation guide.
It seems to go all fine, but when I rebooted, after entering the passphase it started a fsck "from util-linux 2.25.2", then it says:
"/dev/mapper/Debian-root: clean" and stuck there. i gave it quite a bit of time, tried to reinstall it and also got into the rescue mode of the installer,
