Fedora :: Way Of Altering Time Between Password Requests
Oct 26, 2010
Is there a way of altering the time between password requests. For example after I login there seems to be a certain amount of time before the screen blanks out and a new request for the user password is asked. I would like to increase the time substantially.

Having recently installed Ubuntu 10.10, I'm currently looking around for different programs. However, it's already getting on my nerves that I have to type my password every time I want to install something. Where and how do I disable this? I already set myself as admin in the user settings but that doesn't seem to work.
This goes for things like changing system settings too, it's really annoying.

I have a FC10 installation with GNOME and NetworkManager and a wireless card. Everything works ok. However, when I try and setup gdm to do autologon I get the NetworkManager applet asking for the password for the gnome-keyring to get the wireless details. Since I want to use this machine as a sever this is unacceptable as I won't be around to type in the password. I tried the solution at [URL] but this does not work. I still get the password being requested and the keyring password is the same as the logon password. Can anyone say if there is a workaround that works to get the NetworkManager to be able to read the gnome keyring without having to prompt me for it.

I'm the only one who uses or has access to my computer, so I don't need the password security that others might. Frankly, it pisses me off to have to enter my password every time I leave the computer for a few minutes, or want to make the many tweaks that are necessary to get a system going, whether it's installing software or anything else. How do I stop it?

I use Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to be able to move around the system without having to frequently enter my password. For example, when waking up the system from a power save state or when accessing Synaptic Package Manager I do not want to be asked to enter my password. There is nothing on my system that matters if its security is breached. Is there a way to turn off these requests for a password?

How can I make the Linux ping to show the requests 'time out' instead of omitting the output?
Just like the Windows version of ping.

I run a small home server (Debian 4), which acts as my gateway to the internet (ie, firewall) and runs a web server, dhcp, dns, and acts as a file server to the rest of the machines on my home network. Now I know it's never a smart idea to have all those services running on the same machine that is acting as a firewall, but I don't fancy running multiple servers just for home use, as it's mainly allowing me to learn system administration.
I noticed a few days ago that my internet had become unbearably slow, to the point where I could sometimes not load web pages. I spent a while searching through log files on my gateway, to try and find out what was eating up all of my bandwidth. When I came to apache's access.log file, I was confronted with this:
Code:
204.45.41.82 - - [17/Oct/2010:06:25:10 +0100] "GET http://vewice6.nightmail.ru/marriott-grand-cayma.html HTTP/1.1" 200 36921 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; M$

Multiple requests to my server, for totally random websites. I didn't even know it was possible to make those types of queries to a webserver. The only thing that is on the web server is a browser based torrent client. I have only shown a small snippet of the log file, but there are around 90k lines to different web addresses, from many different IPs. What I want to know, is what is happening? :S Why is someone querying MY web server, for web sites totally unrelated to it? And most of all, how can I stop it. My initial was to try and use iptables to block multiple requests from the same ip within a certain time frame, which I think would work as the server shouldn't really get many queries from external networks.

On my server I provide OCR file conversion service but the problem is when a user uploads a file and it's being converted then if you open another tab and try to load the site it won't respond until that conversion is completed. In other words until the PHP script finishes execution apace doesn't serve any other request to the same browser.
Here is my apache configuration:
Code:
ServerTokens OS
ServerRoot "/etc/httpd"
PidFile run/httpd.pid
[code]....
You can check what I mean if you try to upload and convert a file and while the file is converting try opening the site in another tab.

I've managed to confirm that I can reach my home network via ssh from a remote location through my SMC Barricade when it is directly connected to the desktop machine but when the second router is put back into the chain ssh requests time out. The second router is a Linksys WRT 54GL running the Tomato firmware. The chain looks like this: ISP's router (bridged) --> Barricade -->WRT54GL-->desktop
The Barricade has port 22 forwarded to the Linksys' WAN address and it in turn forwards to the desktop address. It appears that it is a setting on the Linksys firmware that is preventing the remote connection. I've looked through the various settings many times but cannot see anything that would cause the problem.

When I boot up my password is requested three separate times by the keyring. Sometimes if I have left my computer to boot up it will actually be requested four times. I get the impression it relates to start up programs, for example if I leave it so that it requests the password a fourth time, at the same time the wifi connection settings pop up requesting the wifi password. I remember having a similar problem before and I think I was able to set a program as always having access to the keyring once logged in, but I can't remember or find how to do this. The programs that are maximized on startup are; transmission, liferea. Docky and gnome-do are also arranged to load on startup.

I use Fedora 14 KDE spin, and I have a wireless network with 4 users. When I start my PC I have to enter the administrator password for the KDE wallet, and also the wireless password if I want to connect to the Internet. This is no problem for me, but I prefer not to share those passwords with the other 3 users. I selected the "Connect automatically" option in the wireless connection settings, but it still asks me for the password every time.

I've tried Ubuntu, Arch, and most recently Fedora but the SUSE GNOME environment blows everything else away!
The only problem (so far) is that Network Manager requires you to enter your password every time you login to unlock the password keyring. I want to disable this.
I think some distros disable the prompt by using the login password to unlock the keyring, but I use auto-login (if that makes a difference).

I've trying to get dnsmasq working as a combined dns and dhcp server. It's infuriating so far... In short, the DNS works fine for anything added to /etc/hosts, and the dhcp works fine, but the dhcp is not updating the dns with hostname information from clients.
The outcome of this is that i can only ping a node by hostname if i know it's address, which means setting a static dhcp allocation and putting the hostname into /etc/hosts manually, which is very annoying and kind of defeats the poit of dhcp. There must be a way to get dnsmasq to update the hosts file, surely The clients aren't using fqdn's if that matters, and i think i've tried every combinination of "expand-hosts" and "domain=" following is the dnsmasq config file contents:
domain-needed
bogus-priv
except-interface=tun0
[code]....

I have 10.04.1 on my server with a 250gb sata drive. I have all my files on this hard drive. I'm running out of space so I have another 250gb sata drive I need installed. I want to create raid 0 so I can expand my servers hard drive space. I don't want to lose my data on original hard drive or reinstall to create the raid. Is there a way to achieve this with mdadm without altering the first hard drives data?

We are running SLES 11 where an iscsi tape library is attached. To load the tape in a slot we are using for
instance the command #mtx -f /dev/sg1 load 2 which is doing very well. But after a server's reboot the device name of the loader is now /dev/sg4 or /dev/sg5 I mean it is dynamic. Is there any way to have a fixed device name for all times?

I'm new here and hope to profit from your immense linux knowledge and of course to share my own experience where I can.
I'm in a student organization and we use a file server that runs linux. I can log in through ssh and copy using scp using login and password (no rsa/dsa keys because most users are windows users using winSCP and they're lacking in computer knowledge so we don't require them to mess around with keys)
However, I don't have network access everywhere, so I'd like to make a copy on my laptop harddisk of some of the folders I use most frequently. Note that I don't need it to copy files from my pc back to the remote server so I don't need two-way sync. Deleting the local copy every time and downloading a new full copy is not an option as we are talking about several gigabytes and the download speed is limited. Normally I would use Unison, however, this requires unison to be installed on both pc's and I can't install any software on the file server so this is not an option.
Any ideas on how to achieve this? I'm reasonable knowledgable about linux so I don't mind tinkering with some config files and using command line applications.

I am trying to send a multicast stream out from a Windows XP computer to my FC12 computer. I am using VLC for both the stream and the receive end of the process. Its version is 1.1.0-pre1 if that helps. As of right now I've used Wireshark to detect network packets, and I am unable to see any IGMP requests from the Fedora's IP address, whereas when I try to initialize a receiving stream on my Windows XP computer, I can see IGMP packets where appropriate. So the issue clearly lies with either VLC in Fedora, or Fedora itself, but I can't figure out how to narrow it down any further.
If it helps, I AM able to stream FROM my Fedora computer TO my Windows computer. Additionally, I am UNABLE to stream from my Fedora computer back to my Fedora computer (locally), despite being able to do that on the Windows side.

I want to track the number of requests that a file gets downloaded and viewed.
What I have is mp4 files on the server and they could either get played in flash player or downloaded via mobile or whatever.
I need to see how many times that files gets downloaded or viewed. Since its in a php page I am able to track the number of views. But I want to able to track the direct downloads.
I was thinking something along the lines of htaccess redirect to php then to file.
But that would mess up the player from playing the file I would think. I am not sure how to make that happen with the htaccess either though.

I guess this might sound strange, but, I want to be asked all the time for either my user password or root password. I have searched high and low and all I can find is people wanting to disable asking for password. My guess is a majority of those users are ex-Windows users. I prefer to be asked as I feel it an added security tool. how to enable the system to ask for the user/root password everytime?

I am changing the password of a truecrypt file container. This takes around 1 minute. Why?
time truecrypt --text --change /tmp/user1.tc --keyfiles= --new-keyfiles= --password=known --new-password=known --random-source=/dev/null"
If I use strace I see that it basically does not do anything: it simply reads lots of random data from /dev/urandom (even if i specified /dev/null as random source) and finally changes the password:
open("/dev/urandom", O_RDONLY) = 6
read(6, "36&{35121221234320234313242312I326235245224300354O)270Q200 201J227224311_212367"..., 640) = 640
close(6) = 0
