I have a Windows domain with a proxy. I have an account that can use the proxy and the URL that points to the proxy.pac file. this might seem a stupid question but can anyone tell me how do I enter the username and password for my test Windows account so that Debian can authenticate it?
View 1 RepliesI have setup a debian server and it has been working fine but I moved it to a different location and not I am getting a problem. When I start the server up, it loads fine and loggin prompt. I can enter the username "root" without any issues but as soon as I press enter, I am not able to enter password. The cursor just blinks and i press enter, the server responds by saying invalid password.
I was connecting a USB keyboard and changed to Ps/2 but this didn't make any difference.
I have a win XP box and want to share files on this win XP box In Ubuntu 10.10 I previous used, I just connect the win XP sahred folder via file browser without any username and password. In my Debian Squeeze, when I connect to my win XPIt poped up a window and asked me the username and password. But I don't set any password in my win XP even my administrator account. How can I do to make my connecting to win XP smoothly like the Ubuntu does?

I later wanted to change the settings. So I went to systems-->administration-->login window-->security. There I disabled automatic login and I reboot the computer. Now the GUI does not allow me to enter Username and password. It says "Authorization denied" at the login screen.

Am trying Ubuntu 9.10 CD; tried first to run from CD- but it asks for username and password, will not accept blanks nor my winxp values- keeps 'failing to authenticate'. So I did an install in new partition beyond linux fc6. It finally lets me log in, giving a small text window. But no, it loads a white page for a couple of seconds and then go back to the section where you enter username & password. Why? the user and pass was correct. If i hit ctrl + alt +f1 and use the same username and password i can login with the CLI. But not in the graphical login prompt. How does such a problem gets fixed?

Though I took careful notes during the install re the "user account" (did not use my name as my purpose is to get the pc running and give it away) and "user password," it will not accept them. I would like to change or edit both (debian isn't telling me which is incorrect). How can this be done?
Also, this is looking for the "user account" - not the root info, right?
If I am forced to reinstall the OS, will I have to go through the entire process (partitions and all)?
I am using Debian Linux. I completely forgot the username and password to log on. I looked on the internet to find a way to reset those, but all the solutions involve making a boot disk or using some peripheral. The computer I am using does not have any peripherals (only keyboard and screen) because it's an onboard computer in a robot.
Is there a way to reset the password and username without using peripherals (and without losing the information on the hard disk)?
I'm working on sharing a user's home folder using the username and password of the user's lLnux account. I noticed that home folder sharing is quite easy as I just need to change the smb.conf file to enable it. However I can't seem to login anyway. It seems that Samba keeps its own records of username and passwords. Is there a way that I can map/sync the Linux users' usernames and passwords automatically to Samba? The end result should be that whenever I add a new user or a user changes his/her Linux login password,Samba automatically changes its password as well.

I just downloaded Debian's live CD .iso file. I put it on a USB stick and booted from it. It loads everything then presents me a login screen. I have no idea what the login and password is I've looked all over google and people said it was user: live pass: live or something like that. I've tried a lot of different combinations with no luck. When I drink tea, the water splashed on my keyboard. It didn't cause any problems until a few mins ago. Now my Enter and right hand side shift key don't function any more (The new line in this text is copied from other thread).

I did exactly that, then it asks to reboot which I did, and still no ubuntu. All I have is 3 folders, one icon and one application.

View 2 Replies View Relatedin the past i always used debian for servers only (mainly webservers, routers and antispam gateways), but now i have to develop some application for linux so i installed it on a desktop (have always been running windows on my desktops). i am running testing (mainly because i need some more recent packages and working with stable i find myself using backports most of the time). now i have seen that the standard used web browser is iceweasel (which according to sources i found is a firefox fork) but this browser seems to have some troubles:
- videos : always gives me an error in the video frame and i have to clear my cookies and reload the page to make it work for every single video i watch. embedded ..... vids work fine.
- gmail : as soon as i open my gmail account on any tab or iceweasel window all other windows are unuseable (show blank as if the application crashed) but gmail works fine. as soon as i close the iceweasel window where gmail is running all other windows are doing normal again.
- lots of pages display very poorly on iceweasel (misplaced div's, ... etc) : this is nearly always on pages where you find overlayed advertising in div's so i guess this is mainly dued to poor coding of those junk adds (i can live with that).
is there any alternative to iceweasel. especially the gmail part is very annoying, the rest i could live with (but prefer not to). i googled the web for those problems but i mostly found that these problems occured because of some extension (for example : ad blocker) but i don't use those so it didn't solve my problem.
I have wiped Windows and am running 10.04 exclusively. 32 bit, when setting up evolution e mail account i dont see where to enter password....where is it? anyone have link with screenshots? i know i can use regular hotmail but want to know how to use default ubuntu programs.

I am pasting sudo commands without problems as a user (ales in my case) and then immediately the ask the user password.
The keyboard seems to be dead, no keys work, not allowing me to enter the password.
Succeeded in connecting to internet using my wll phone. I can now connect using 'wvdial' command in root terminal. But I want to connect through terminal. I tried 'sudo wvdial' command. Then I am asked for my password. But I cannot type my password there. When I type, nothing appears on the terminal window. Ofcourse there's no problem with my keyboard.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI am trying to use a guest account in Ubuntu 10.10 however I am unable to stop the guest account from authenticating as a superuser and gaining root permissions dispite removing all permissions from the user-group control panel. The new guest account I created is not part of the admin group. However, with my new guest account I am unable to start a guest session from the panel, AND if I use the guest session from the panel I dont have the problem with the guest session being able to authenticate. How do I prevent super user authentication from an account in this situation? It seems that any account can authenticate and my /etc/sudoers file looks like this:

Does anyone know if I can successfully remove / delete the 'debian-sys-maint' account from MySQL? I noticed it there and appears to be something the Debian developers / maintainers of MySQL package added. I am guessing it's there to manage package updates and system maintenance as a back door of sorts. Anyone know if I can remove this account and not break the package or database?

I have a rather difficult problem. Every time I need root privileges and I am asked to authenticate (i.e. Update Manager, mounting a partition, etc), the password window comes up, shakes and immediately closes, leaving me with no chance to enter a password. What to do?edit: this is NOT the login window, just the little dialog that pops up when you need elevated privileges.
