Ubuntu :: Let Admin Users Change The Setting Without Having To Enter A Password Every Time?
Jan 11, 2010
It seems that karmic has changed the behavior of Gnome's cpufreqselector, so that it requires root authority to make changes, and those changes don't persist after a reboot.
Is there a way to make changes persistent? Is there a way to let admin users change the setting without having to enter a password every time?

I've tried several installs via Windows with the latest RC of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu/Netbook et al, and I've encountered the same problem all over: every time an admin password is required, for example to install updates or new applications, I enter it, but then, the authentication window freezes, even though I've clicked on Confirm or pressed Enter to validate the password.

I use rsyc for synching files that I type with a server and every time I have to enter the server's password. Right now in my .bashrc file there is an alias like this code...
but can't find such a thing in rsync or ssh man pages. Does anybody know what I should do?

I've tried Ubuntu, Arch, and most recently Fedora but the SUSE GNOME environment blows everything else away!
The only problem (so far) is that Network Manager requires you to enter your password every time you login to unlock the password keyring. I want to disable this.
I think some distros disable the prompt by using the login password to unlock the keyring, but I use auto-login (if that makes a difference).

I recently decided to try and change my admin password on my usual default account (the one you have to type in, in order to do sudo e.t.c im guessing)a the user account option...and having entered my previous password correctly,t will not allow me to enter a new password, it just seems to hang, (i.e the working icon appears, but having waited a minute or twwo nothing seems to of happened..(cannot press the confirm button). Is there a way to reset the password so that i can set a new one, if i cannot change my own admin password, and i was working on a windows system, i would be screaming system compromise right now, but as its ubuntu, im sure theres a perfectly innocent explantion

i'm trying to get everything working ok. i have installed ubuntu using wubi and i've found that i can access my files on my windows partition from ubuntu. to do this i have to mount the disk and enter the password each time i boot up, and i would like this to be done automatically. i was wondering if this was possible? i put in a link directly to the music folder on windows into my 'places' but it only appears once i have put the password in. its not a huge thing, but its one of those things which would make starting up my ubuntu a lot more conveniant.

I just know it has to be possible to let two users (since I have two kids) share the same PC at the same time using a 2nd graphic card, two displays, two keyboards, two mice. I have seen one 10 year old "how to" which just didn't seem like it would fly with today's XFree/DBUS/all USB setups.
Does anyone know how to do this? I would like each user to see a log in screen and log into a GUI desktop (it doesn't have to be KDE, but that is what we have been using). The MB and the video card use the same type of GPU. The PC has a dual core AMD, and 4 GB of RAM, so the resources should be fine for school work, KDE Educational software/games. Other than squid, there isn't particular server running on it either, so resources should not be an issue.

Then I am asked for my password. But I cannot type my password there. When I type, nothing appears on the terminal window. Ofcourse there's no problem with my keyboard.

In Kubuntu 10.10, the clock is set to military time. I shouldn't have to do the math just to look at the clock. There is no setting anywhere to change it to normal time.

My company has policy that user accounts expire once a month and they also get locked out if they re-try login more than 3 times (pam_tally). It gets very annoying every time they come and ask to get password changed. How do I let users change their own password? Also let the system email them every day for two weeks before password expiration and until they change their password?

I thought these were the same password?In-fact, they WERE the same password on the set-up I currently have. But now, weirdly, I can log in fine but I the exact same password is not using in order to perform admin tasks.I've tried a recovery mode, console, and then "password (username)" in order to reset the password. This does reset the password I need to use to log in, but the password still does not work for performing admin tasks

All was fine until last week when our chief asked to me to set password expiration for all clients. I have a rather difficult problem. Every time I need root privileges and I am asked to authenticate (i.e. Update Manager, mounting a partition, etc), the password window comes up, shakes and immediately closes, leaving me with no chance to enter a password. What to do?edit: this is NOT the login window, just the little dialog that pops up when you need elevated privileges.

I need to create a number of internal Linux users for admin purposes. I do not want these users to appear on the initial console login page just after Fedora boots up, as users who can attempt to log in, and I do not want to allow these users to log in directly. I merely want these users to be accessed via su, just like the root user.

In my custom Ubuntu, I can't use gnome-disk-utility application to format USB drive ("Permission denied" error). I have to run gnome-disk-utility with "sudo" to do that.
I guess that I am not in a group which has permission to working with devices, but I can't find out what group is.
Another problem is I can't use "Users and groups" application (users-admin) to manage users and groups, I click buttons but nothing happens I guess that I don't have some kind of permissions too.
How could I fix these 2 problems?
