Debian Multimedia :: Set A Non Standard Vertical Refresh Of A Crt?

May 8, 2010

I'm trying to enable a non standad vertical refresh rate of my crt in squeeze/gnome under the radeon driver, which does work under lenny and fglrx out of the box without any additional manual configuration. I already tried adding the VertRefresh option to xorg.conf under the Monitor Section, but that didn't worked out so far. One strange thing is that if i look into the Xorg log file i can see a line which sais as if the driver can see the possible refresh rates, but still in gnome i cant set those refresh rates to be active

# /var/log/Xorg.0.log|less
(II) RADEON(0): Ranges: V min: 50 V max: 160 Hz, H min: 30 H max: 85 kHz, PixClock max 180 MHz

These are probably only the rates which my crt can handle, but still im unable to set 1024x768x100Hz because the max i get is 85Hz for that resolution.

Debian Hardware :: Increasing Refresh Rate On CRT

May 7, 2014

I just got a CRT monitor today, used of course, and plugged it in, pleased with many things. However, the screen is blinking subtly as a result of low refresh rate. This monitor is supposed to be 1024x768 @87 hz and 1280x1024 @66hz (here are the specs [URL]. I only get the following from Xrandr:

Code: Select allfoo@debian:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 4096 x 4096
VGA1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768       60.0*
   800x600        60.3     56.2
   848x480        60.0
   640x480        59.9

Is there anyway I can get my desired resolution? I can't find the xorg.config which I read about.

Debian Configuration :: Unable To Change Refresh Rate

Oct 6, 2015

I have three monitors, two Dells and an older LG all native at 1920x1080@60Hz and only recently installed Debian on this setup.

The LG is detected as running at 59.93Hz instead of 60Hz and this discrepancy appears to drive up the temperatures in my GPU constantly, even on idle, and introduces severe stuttering in any kind of graphical application.

I had the exact same issue with Windows 7 as well, but was able to fix it by changing the display settings of said monitor to 60Hz refresh, thereby returning the idle temps to normal and removing the stuttering.

My problem now is that I can't seem to change the refresh rate of this screen at all under debian.

xrandr -q returns that the monitor is running at 59.93Hz, but also shows 60Hz as available.
xrandr --output DVI-I-1 --rate 60
appears to have absolutely no effect, it doesn't error but it also doesn't change the refresh rate.

Trying to add a new mode with 60hz and modeline obtained from cvt results in the following:

Code: Select allxrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode DVI-I-1 "1920x1080_60.00"X Error of failed request:  BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request:  140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request:  18 (RRAddOutputMode)
Serial number of failed request:  41
Current serial number in output stream:  42

I've also tried to set the refresh rate through the proprietary nvidia driver and manually through xorg.conf, both to no effect;

Here's my current xorg.conf:

Code: Select allSection "ServerLayout"
    Identifier     "Layout0"
    Screen      0  "Screen0" 0 0
    InputDevice    "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
    InputDevice    "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
    Option         "Xinerama" "0"
EndSection

[Code] ....

The driver settings will show 60Hz but the listing for the monitor in the driver and xrandr will still show 59.93Hz. Saving the settings of nvidia-settings to .nvidia-settings-rc was equally fruitless.

The settings on the monitor itself also show it running at 60Hz, without an option to go down to 59.93Hz so I got no clue where that is even coming from.

What else to try, besides buying a new monitor, which I'm not quite prepared to do yet.

Debian :: Installing Debian For The First Time?

May 7, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu since 8.04 and I'm getting tired of it. Every time I update to the latest version, even if I wait awhile, something always breaks. I want an OS that I can update without having to worry about something breaking and I hear that Debian is great for that. I'll be installing it in a few hours when I get back from Iron Man 2. I just created this thread because I know I'm going to have questions. Don't worry, I'll try to solve any problems I come across myself before asking here. I'll be installing Debian Stable because I figure that'll be good enough for me.

I have searched high and low and all I can find is people wanting to disable asking for password. My guess is a majority of those users are ex-Windows users. I prefer to be asked as I feel it an added security tool. how to enable the system to ask for the user/root password everytime?

At the moment the thumbnails of the movies are the generic orange media image and when I replace it with the backup movie, across to ubuntu and refresh the browser, the thumbnail stays the same i.e. it doesn't show a small screen cap of the movie. Is there a way to 'refresh' them properly as it were? I am running Ubuntu 10.10.
