I'm using Debian 7.8 Wheezy amd64, Gnome classic session. Laptop ASUS F551MAV, Intel HD Graphics (Integrated GPU), xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.19.0-6, firmware-linux-free 3.2
Sometimes, after inactivity, the screen turns black, not allowing me to see login screen. If I press CTRL+ALT+F1 (or F2,F3,Fn) nothing happens. The computer is still responsive, as I can reboot it through key shortcuts.
I have search in almost all logs in /var/log, without any information about the cause of the error. The time I was away from computer was between +- 18:10-18:22
Here is the log of daemon.log at the time of rebooting: [URL] ....
I can see one line that seems to be an error with (but it is displayed as warning):
Code: Select allFeb 18 18:21:47 debian gnome-session[3714]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Recurso no disponible temporalmente) on X server :0.#012
Recurso no disponible temporalmente is in english something like: Resource not available temporaly.

It is not the first time that this is happens. It already happened a few times, that when I'm away, the screen is simply blocked.
i'm trying to intall an old etch debian release using the netinstall netinstall debian-40r9-i386-netinst.iso. But i've got an issue while configuring the miror. Here where i'm blocked (it seems my archive miror is not right but why ?): in the previous screen, i entered the right path (i think): and as you can see in my screen cap of the broswer, the website of the archive is right, so where am i go wrong ?:
i have an installation of wheezy 7.8 i think. i was facing difficulties in read of matroska video. therefore have decided to installer gstreamer1.0 wich should be resolve my problem. i have added the backports repository in apt sources list. after an apt-get update i launch apt-get install gstreamer1.0 . i have noticed it have starting downloading more file than it needs i concluded that it was a upgrade or something like because the kernel was also updated. after the the packet downloading it has started the installation with some errors related to LOCALE LCC. it has stopped and restarted some services wich is normal. i have closed all others apps and restarted. Here start the hell. after the restart i have passed the kde login screen and after BLACK SCREEN with mouse working.
Alt+F2 don't open the krunner
What i have tried? i have rename the /home/jefcolbi/.cache and back it again, rename /home/jefcolbi/.kde and back it again. next i have tried to check the Xorg config file. i created a new one with X -configure, modified it to feet my system configuration this does not resolve the problem but add another the keyboard is not working in graphical mode.
My system configuration:
Toshiba laptop Satellite Pro L300 Dual core 3gb Ram graphic card:Mobile Intel(R) GMA 4500MHD sound card: Intel HD Audio debian whezzy 7.8 with KDE
Note: everything was working fine before trying to install gstreamer1.O from backports repository
I'm always getting a blank console screen after booting a 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 kernel in squeeze. I still can read the line "Loading, please wait ..." in the display for a second - then it's completely black until X windows is starting. When I try switching from the X console to another virtual console (by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 e. g.), the complete system freezes. I have to hard reboot then. When I boot the previous 2.6.32-3-amd64 kernel instead, everything is fine as expected, though. There's a line "GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x16@60" in /etc/default/grub as well as a line "set gfxpayload=keep" in /etc/grub.d/00_header. So the problem might be framebuffer related in any way. Any ideas what could be tried? The system is a Latitude E6500 with a Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller
After upgrading to Jessie (AMD64) I have a totally blank screen, not even a blinking cursor. The video card is a GeForce 6200 and I have nouveau loaded. I originally had an nvidia module in Wheezy. I decided to use the instructions at the Debian NvidiaGraphicsDriver wiki to install the NVIDIA legacy package. That was worse. The nvidia module was unloaded in the X.org log, and the screen presented as a login console.
I tediously removed all NVIDIA components, and reverted to nouveau since its report in X.org log says it supports GeForce 6 series cards. That brought me back to a totally blank screen. The nouveau module lists as "video" doing lsmod. Both gdm3 and the X server processes are up and running. Other than reporting that "nv" couldn't be loaded, there is nothing in X.org log that appear abnormal. The .xsessions_error log is troubling however, but I don't have the knowledge to interpret.
I have just installed Debian Wheezy on an E6XX Intel platform and after loading ramdisk, the screen goes black and I cannot use the system.
*) In the beginning, I tried to pass "nomodeset" in Grub, but after loading ramdisk, it tries to change screen's resolution and it goes blank. *) gma500 output in dmesg can be seen in [1] at the bottom of this page. *) I tried passing "GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=640x480" + update-grub, but it keeps failing. *) I examined EDI's monitor output through "sudo get-edid |sudo parse-edid" (see [2] below), it seems that it is not possible to get the EDID information from the screen correctly. However, I am using this screen with xrandr with Debian Squeeze and I have no problems.

I decided to update all the software on my computer. Fortunately, it upgraded kernel version 3.14 to 3.16. I was happy to learn that suspend now worked on my laptop by calling pm-suspend, but it did not worked by closing the lid. So I search and found on debian's website that installing systemd and adding some config lines in /etc/systemd/logind.conf would sove the issue. So I followed the procedure and did like instructed, to end up with a computer that boots on black screen.
The last verbrose line I see on boot up is "kvm disabled by bios" and then it shutdown down the screen. The computer works, as I can login and shutdown by doing those operation blindly.
I tried removing systemd but it still does not work. If I use the old kernel 3.14 I can boot without any problem, but if I use kernel 3.16, I boot to a black screen. I remember successfully booting in 3.16 before installing systemd.
Downloaded and copied to a usb pen drive the latest debian testing snapshot netinstall iso: wget url
then dd if=debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso of=/dev/sdb
Everything went fine, even the install part. After the 1st boot, problems started. I've never seen so much errors after a first install and probably they are all reported.
1. ata_id[297]: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/sdb' 2. mkdir: cannot create directory `/run/udev/rules.d/': Read-only file system 3. startpar: service(s) returned failure: udev ... failed! 4. INIT: Id "co" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes 5. eth0 doesn't automatically start; one has to start it via ifup eth0 After that, installed a minimal xserver-xorg-core, xserver-xorg-video-radeon and kde-plasma-desktop. I'm unable to use the newly DE environment, the screen just freezes, I'm guessing because of the udev error.
I have to restart via Magic SysRQ key: Alt+PrtScr+S > Alt+PrtScr+U > Alt+PrtScr+B
I installed successfully fedora 15. The problem is that after a couple of session, the system doesn't load gnome3 desktop. I boot, insert my credential at login and the system load the splash screen (the blue screen with birds) but doesn't load the desktop
i block my screen (glmatriz screensaver), and go sleep or lunch, and when i get back, i have to logon again, and all my applications have been killed. the weirdest thing is that this does not happen everytime, but i cannot find a pattern to the times that happens.i pretty sure that the machine is not rebooting, cause my uptime still intact.some data: ubuntu lucid (upgraded from jaunty) x86, system all up to date. hardware is a desktop dell vostro 220n (intel chipset, 2gb memory and a pentium e5400.
im running ubuntu lucid here, and on both firefox and chrome.....after i watch somthing in a full screen...i have to restart the browser to be able to type somthing with keyboard! its wierd, i dont know if its veetle problem or ubuntu problem!anyone is facing this issue?
I have a Asus A8N-E motherboard with AMD64 processor and NVidia 6600 GT graphics card.I downloaded the AMD64 version of 10.04 (the boot+live cd) and tried booting with it. After looking at the screen showing Ubuntu loading with 5 dots moving forward for about 5minutes, the screen went blank (not completely blank as power-off but a very dark grey color). I waited for about 10-15 minutes in this state but nothing happened.During this whole 10-15 min period the disk usage on the machine was high.Eventually, I just turned off the machine and booted into windows (which was already present on my machine) successfully. Is that blank screen for such a long duration a normal step during installation or was a different process expected?
i have fresh installed debian wheezy xfce4, and using slim to start it but i can't get reboot, shutdown and thunar can't open flash and others volumes. i using .xinitrc (exec ck-launch-session startxfce4)
I have installed Fedora 8 before 5 months. I normally use Eclipse, java, firefox, tomcat. Nowadays when I am working in any of the said applications suddenly my desktop goes off like a blank screen as if my monitor switched off. After 30 secs or sometime the user login page comes. I need to restart all my work again. I use gnome.
I've found myself using Ubuntu more recently because of newer packaged apps, so I finally decided I'd upgrade my laptop and desktop”each amd64—to Squeeze, instead of starting a bunch of apt-pinninng. I started with the laptop, which despite my preparations is now broken.
The last few days I have had to reboot my Ubuntu-workstation when the screen suddenly goes black. After some seconds I get a pop-up with the message: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode There is some buttons that tells me I can do different things (like reconfiguration ) but whatever I do I end up loosing all windows I worked in earlier. And having to reboot to get back full resolution. I have not found any way to reproduce this behavior. It has happened after being logged in for several days and sometimes just after boot and login when I'm starting an xterm and in all time intervals in between the output of:
Recently upgraded to 10.04 after countless problems w/ Karmic & already problems with Lucid! The screen sometimes suddenly goes black, then goes into low graphics mode, if I let it, thereby changing screen rez & unless I reboot, I am stuck in this mode. If I don't choose temporary low graphics mode, I must reboot. Many others seem to be experiencing the same problem yet have been offered no solution by the developers. So.
I just installed Ubuntu on my home desktop computer this morning, and I am having fun exploring this new alternative to Microsoft. I originally tried to install Kubuntu, but after multiple unsuccessful attempts I gave Ubuntu a try and it worked like a charm.
Here's what I did: First, I burned the installation CD. Then I booted from that CD and began the installation process. When the Kubuntu desktop came up, and the icons started to appear, the screen suddenly went black. After that it flashed back and forth between the partially loaded desktop and the black screen. That's as far as I got.
In KDE @ Slackware 13.1, turn on composite, and lock the screen. Then move the mouse. For > 3/4 of the time I can see the screen saver suddenly disappeared and my desktop showed up for about 0.1s, then the screen saver came back and asked for password. This problem can enable unauthorized people to peek into a locked screen. I don't know if this is because of my poor laptop with Intel integrated graphics. Can anyone reproduce it?
I am having some troubles with my networking. I have a fresh install of Debian 4.0.4-1. My problem is: I boot up and everything is great.
Code: Select all~# ifconfig eth0   Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1e:68:46:4b:ae         UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1    RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0      TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0      [Code] ...
I try to switch the hardware switch on and off with no avail. The only way to fix it is to reboot. But then when I ifconfig down and up I'm stuck in airplane mode again.
i immigrate to Debian Squeeze. So, for each time i want to start debian i have a kernel panic and ( mouse + keyboard blocked ), I can't use anything. Here is my kern.log pastebin
I have a problem with nautilus thumbnails since a few days. I checked they are indeed generated in .thumbnails, but all I got in nautilus is the "loading.." icon instead of the thumbnail, for all kind of files (pdf, image, video..) + a high cpu load.
I really don't see what to look at here, didn't found any trace of error in several logs/debug tool like gdb (and btw does nautilus have log abilities?)
I don't know which change could have triggered this (it used to work fine), maybe adding the i386 compatibilty with "dpkg --add-architecture i386" ? (I did this a few days ago in order to install acrobat reader)
Also I've been copying all of the home folder files from my previous ubuntu account to the new debian one, maybe I broke something in the process ?
I am using Fedora 11 and when the system booted, the screen resolution and font size were increased all of a sudden. Then I configured the screen resolution using
Quote:
system-config-display
to the actual that I had.
But the fonts in gedit are still big. Although the settings shows the default settings that I search on several blogs i.e.
Quote:
Edit -> Preferences -> Fonts & Colors -> Use the system fixed width font (Monospace 10)
But when Squeeze goes from 'testing' to 'stable' in December... does Wheezy get promoted from 'sid/unstable' to 'testing' at the same time?.
I started my life in Linux with and currently use Ubuntu, and it runs decent(barely). However, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, and because of strange little issues and increasing bloatware, I have been forced to strongly consider the "mother OS": Debian.
The reason for my original question is that I want to run whatever the current "testing version" is. And if Wheezy gets promoted at the same time Squeeze does, then I will just wait the 4 weeks instead of slogging through another install(I prefer fresh installations vs upgrading within). I know the test versions of Debian are a bit more active than stable, but I have used Ubuntu for over 2 years, so I have some experience dealing with Terminal commands, package management, gnome, etc...I am also currently VirtualBoxing a copy of Squeeze.
I got "stuck" with stable up to now and want to upgrade to Wheezy. But, although I've done this before, I'm having a dependency problem I wanted to ask about before breaking my system somehow. This is the /etc/apt/sources.list, ready for Wheezy:
[URL]
So, I regularly use aptitude as my package manager. After updating the database with aptitude update, trying aptitude full-upgrade gives me a huge of conflicts.
[code]....
But, if I use apt-get dist-upgrade, I get no conflicts. if I dist-upgrade with apt-get, will that affect my daily usage of aptitude (which I prefer)? I know APT is a single database and apt-get and aptitude are just different interfaces, but I guess differences might rise when marking packages as automatically or manually installed.
Is it possible to run kde in Wheezy without udev? I am asking this because the modesetting failure is manifested as soon as udev tries to populate the /dev directory.
I dont want openjdk packages on my system, in Kubuntu I had a few troubles with them trying to make SqlDeveloper to work around. So this is what I see after a java -version:
Code: Select alledgardo@debian:~$ java -version java version "1.8.0_45" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_45-b14) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.45-b02, mixed mode) edgardo@debian:~$
I've been uninstalling openjdk from synaptic and with other few commands on the terminal so far and I think I probably broke it. I have no /usr/lib/jvm folder only /usr/lib/java/jdk1.8.0_45.But everytime I wish to start up Eclipse it shows the logo for a few seconds and that's it.... never gets opened. And in /usr/bin$ I only have this symbolic link....
Code: Select alllrwxrwxrwx 1 root  root     22 abr 19 18:57 java -> /etc/alternatives/java
I've tried different tutorials I found surfing the web but none of 'em seem to work.
