Debian :: 7.8 Wheezy Amd64 - Screen Blocked Suddenly

Feb 18, 2015

I'm using Debian 7.8 Wheezy amd64, Gnome classic session. Laptop ASUS F551MAV, Intel HD Graphics (Integrated GPU), xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.19.0-6, firmware-linux-free 3.2

Sometimes, after inactivity, the screen turns black, not allowing me to see login screen. If I press CTRL+ALT+F1 (or F2,F3,Fn) nothing happens. The computer is still responsive, as I can reboot it through key shortcuts.

I have search in almost all logs in /var/log, without any information about the cause of the error. The time I was away from computer was between +- 18:10-18:22

Here is the log of daemon.log at the time of rebooting: [URL] ....

I can see one line that seems to be an error with (but it is displayed as warning):

Code: Select allFeb 18 18:21:47 debian gnome-session[3714]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Recurso no disponible temporalmente) on X server :0.#012
Recurso no disponible temporalmente is in english something like: Resource not available temporaly.

Log of syslog at the moment of screen blocked
Code: Select allFeb 18 18:17:01 debian /USR/SBIN/CRON[4235]: (root) CMD (   cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly)

Feb 18 18:21:44 debian shutdown[4411]: shutting down for system reboot

[Code] ....

It is not the first time that this is happens. It already happened a few times, that when I'm away, the screen is simply blocked.

Debian Installation :: Compiling Drivers For A Netinstall?

Jul 18, 2010

I would really like to try and do a Netinstall on my laptop with it. I know I could just download the CD's/a DVD, but I would rather customize it for my laptop, and I've heard that's the fastest way. The problem is that I have to compile the drivers for both my wireless and my wired internet. I have guides to compile both the wireless [URL] and wired [URL] internet. I was wondering if there was a way to compile these drivers in a Netinstall (preferably the wireless, but wired if necessary)?

then

Code: Select allsudo apt-get install lightdm

and finally

Code: Select allsudo apt-get install synaptic apt-xapian-index gdebi gksu menu

after reboot the login screen pops up. I log in, and a terminal pops up over the login screen. I think the issue is startx is not working?

Debian Installation :: Upgrade Sarge To Etch To Lenny?

Mar 29, 2010

<Big Red Flashing Sign that reads, "NEWBIE with two Linux books and very little brain"> I just installed Sarge from a CD onto an old PC and ended up with Debian Linux 3.1, Kernel 2.4.

PC Specs:
Spacewalker Mainboard (AK31V3.1) SocketA AMD Athlon/Duron Processor based DDR Main Board
2x 256MG DDR DIM Q
350w power supply
NVIDIA GeForce AGP8X 6200 Graphics Card 256 MB RAM
Award Modular Bios v6.00PG 12/05/2003
LG Monitor
USB Mouse, Standard keyboard

I did not configure any servers or do any package selections but did manage to get the internet connection working (actually Debian managed that all by itself). I'd like to "upgrade" to Lenny.

Do I need to upgrade to Etch first or can I go straight to Lenny? At what point do I "upgrade" the kernel (before upgrading to Etch/Lenny? After?)

Debian Installation :: Etch To Lenny Libc Upgrade?

I'm trying to upgrade an etch system to lenny, I've updated my sources list to lenny and ran apt-get update. When I try apt-get install apt

apt-get install apt I get the following:

Reading package lists. Done Building dependency tree. Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.  apt: Depends: libc6 (>= 2.7-1) but 2.3.6.ds1-13etch10+b1 is to be installed Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 4.2.1) but it is not going to be installed E: Broken packages

if I try apt-get install apt libc6, it wants to upgrade a whole heap of packages - will this be a safe thing to do ?

Debian Installation :: Grab Multi Arch Netinstall Of Both Lenny 5.0.5 And Latest Frozen Squeeze

It seems as though every time that I want to grab a multi-arch, netinstall ISO from the site (not very often) I have an insane amount of trouble navigating the site and finding what I want. I mean there's no freaking "downloads" section that is split into testing and stable with links to the mirrors and such. I want to grab a multi-arch netinstall of both Lenny 5.0.5 and the latest, frozen Squeeze. I cannot find either. In other words, I'd have to burn six CDs instead of two. Not happening. Can somebody point me to the images that I am seeking?

Debian Installation :: Etch Install Just Started Warning About Untrusted Versions

Mar 17, 2010

I'm doing a fully automated install of Etch, installing the standard system task. I'm using PXE boot with a preseed file.

I do this a lot, and I've not had problems before. This morning, it's stuck at 5% on "Select and install software" saying "Please wait...". The log on console #4 says:

WARNING: untrusted versions of the following packages will be installed!

[snip]

Do you want to ignore this warning and proceed anyway?

I installed a system yesterday without any problems, so I wonder if there's a recent problem with the mirrors I'm using. My /target/etc/apt/sources.list contains:

deb [url]
deb [url]

So it looks like either the UK mirror or security.debian.org.

Debian Installation :: Upgrade Etch To Lenny: No Version Bump, Auto-start Services?

Feb 24, 2010

On my debian web server I curently have ImageMagick 6.3.7 08/07/09 Q16 since this is an old version of imagemagick i wanted to upgrade my system that still runs etch, and afterwards upgrade imagemagick. I can not see what version the current lenny imagemagick package has, but I assume it is newer then 6.3.7, no?

When i ugraded I found out that my apt-sources used stable rather than etch. So I already had a mix of lenny and etch I suppose. I then had > cat /etc/debian_version 4.0 Before I upgraded I changed my apt sources from stable to etch, updated the package-tools and did a dist-upgrade (for details, I followed these instructions). After restarting I have still 4.0 as debian version. Also uname -r is 2.6.17. How can I do a correct update?.

Also my services were not started (ftp, ssh, apache2), so I asked my hoster to start the ssh service. This morning everything was up again, but it seems like nobody there have had a look at this. How do I absolutely ensure that my ssh service is start at boot. It is a remote webserver, so I need at least this service to be running.

Debian Installation :: 6.0.5 Netinst ISO - Bad Archive Mirror

Jun 12, 2012

Last week I installed the Debian 6.0.4 XFCE on to a system from an iso I burned to DVD. I had no problems.

Today I downloaded the 6.0.5 netinst iso and burned a CD to install on a system which has only a CD reader, not DVD. The install goes fine until I select a download mirror. No matter what mirror I select, I get "Bad Archive Mirror".

When I check the log in virtual console 4, the following message appears: "WARNING**: mirror does not support the specified release (squeeze)"...

Debian Installation :: Jessie 8.1 - Mirror Does Not Support Specified Release

Jun 17, 2015

Everything was progressing like any other installation I have done until I was asked to pick the mirror. I chose ftp.us.debian.org like I normally do and it was rejected. When I checked the output on virtual console 4, I am seeing the message "mirror does not support the specified release (jessie)."

I tried a bunch of random mirrors, including international ones, and they all give me that message.

Debian Installation :: Netinst Install Failing To Connect To Mirror

Jun 2, 2010

I am trying to install debian from a netinst cd. Everything seems to go fine except when the installer needs to connect to a mirror. It doesn't throw up an error, it just hangs a bit and then seems to keep going a lot quicker than i would expect. For example, when installing additional software, it gets stuck downloading the first few files for about 5 mins and then skips ahead and finishes the entire process in about 5 mins.

What I end up with is a very bare bones system when I fist boot into it, without any of the stuff that I had indicated that I wanted to install (ie desktop environment, web server, etc). The Internet connection works and I am able to ping websites including a number of the mirrors I tried during the install. However when using apt-get it just gets stuck trying to connect to the mirror and doesn't go any further.

Debian :: Missing UI Elements After Netinstall

May 1, 2016

Every single theme has at least one or more broken UI element. In Arc, I'm missing highlighting in the context menu, and in Numix, some application's backgrounds are just completely black. All of these themes don't give me a urlbar. I'm also missing a lot of boxes. There is no box around the word "submit" in reddit, and neither around "cancel". If you go into the search bar, I'm missing the checkbox for "limit my search to /r/...". I know these themes work, because I had them working in my last install of Debian. Except, last time I used the XFCE iso instead of the netinst. Even default themes, like Raleigh, are not working correctly. I installed all the necessary packages like the gtk2 murrine engine, but if the default themes aren't working then something is definitely missing.

Where can I find the driver, and how can I incorporate it into the install? I wanted to do the netinstall to have Debian as minimal as possible.
