Ubuntu :: Undesirable Logoff When Screen Is Blocked?

Jul 9, 2010

i block my screen (glmatriz screensaver), and go sleep or lunch, and when i get back, i have to logon again, and all my applications have been killed. the weirdest thing is that this does not happen everytime, but i cannot find a pattern to the times that happens.i pretty sure that the machine is not rebooting, cause my uptime still intact.some data: ubuntu lucid (upgraded from jaunty) x86, system all up to date. hardware is a desktop dell vostro 220n (intel chipset, 2gb memory and a pentium e5400.

Ubuntu Networking :: Automatic Wireless Connections Undesirable

Jan 25, 2011

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to change the behavior of Network Manager, so that it will only automatically connect to certain wireless networks which I specify, and not automatically connect to others I may have previously used. For example, there are a lot of wifi networks called "linksys", and I don't want the program to automatically try to connect to whichever one it finds. If someone can tell me in which file(s) the list of these connections is stored, I might be able to write a script which will edit that list on startup.

Debian :: 7.8 Wheezy Amd64 - Screen Blocked Suddenly

Feb 18, 2015

I'm using Debian 7.8 Wheezy amd64, Gnome classic session. Laptop ASUS F551MAV, Intel HD Graphics (Integrated GPU), xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.19.0-6, firmware-linux-free 3.2

Sometimes, after inactivity, the screen turns black, not allowing me to see login screen. If I press CTRL+ALT+F1 (or F2,F3,Fn) nothing happens. The computer is still responsive, as I can reboot it through key shortcuts.

I have search in almost all logs in /var/log, without any information about the cause of the error. The time I was away from computer was between +- 18:10-18:22

Here is the log of daemon.log at the time of rebooting: [URL] ....

I can see one line that seems to be an error with (but it is displayed as warning):

Code: Select allFeb 18 18:21:47 debian gnome-session[3714]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO error 11 (Recurso no disponible temporalmente) on X server :0.#012
Recurso no disponible temporalmente is in english something like: Resource not available temporaly.

Log of syslog at the moment of screen blocked
Code: Select allFeb 18 18:17:01 debian /USR/SBIN/CRON[4235]: (root) CMD (   cd / && run-parts --report /etc/cron.hourly)
Feb 18 18:21:36 debian acpid: client 3226[0:0] has disconnected
Feb 18 18:21:44 debian shutdown[4411]: shutting down for system reboot

[Code] ....

It is not the first time that this is happens. It already happened a few times, that when I'm away, the screen is simply blocked.

Ubuntu :: Logoff From DE From Console?

May 10, 2011

Sometimes my Ubuntu keeps hanging when Unity crashes, or due to some other reason.
Logging out and logging in again seems to solve this problem, but sometimes I cannot even access the terminal from the Desktop.
Is there any command that I can use from the console so that my session at the desktop environment ends and I log out?
I already tried gnome-session-save --logout but it doesn't work

Ubuntu :: Erase Profile At Logoff

Aug 3, 2010

I work for a public school and we are implementing a number of Ubuntu NBR 9.1 netbooks. I wanted to use Likewise Active Directory for authentication, but have problems with the software so now I'm onto another solution for our problem.
We are going to have one login for all users (Students, is the name). The problem with this is that Website passwords can inadvertantly be stored, potentially compromising users personal data. Additionally, I don't want to have any files left in the Students profile in case people accidentally save personal information in their files.I'm thinking there are potentially two solutions:

1. The Students profile is deleted when the user logs off. This will erase web history and files

2. The Students account is always logged in with a temporary profile (or no profile, if that is possible) that deletes itself at logoff because it is temporary.

I'm having a hard time coming up with search terms for a solution like this, so I thought I would put the question to the experts.

Also, on a related note, if I switch to dash with the bash_profile method still work?

OpenSUSE :: KDE 4.5 Logoff & Shutdown Does Not Work / Solve This?

Jan 29, 2011

I'm running OS 11.3x64, KDE 4.5.

After running updates yesterday (Friday) now the Shutdown and Log Off buttons don't work in KDE. This happens with the taskbar buttons, and in the Leave menu. The only way out now is to ALT+F1 into a console, log in as root, and run shutdown. The system will shutdown at that point, but it's pretty inconvenient. I'm using the login manager that installs with KDE (can't remember the name) since Gnome was installed as a secondary desktop.

Ubuntu :: Remote Access (SSH Or VNC) Being Blocked

May 18, 2010

I can't seem to remotely SSH or VNC into my machine. If I'm on the LAN and try accessing via LAN IP, it works fine. If i go in through a remote address (my dyndns) or even my home IP, I can't connect (yes, all of the ports are forwarded, I've triple checked this multiple times). Interestingly enough, port 80 works just fine. It would seem as though some sort of firewall is blocking me. I've done this plenty of times before with various machines, and this has me quite perplexed.

Ubuntu :: Connections Between IP / Tracker Blocked?

Aug 18, 2010

I am trying to use Bittornado with iptables via Firestarter. Previously, I had no problems, but now I have started using Firestarter, traffic is blocked. AIUI, after selecting the .torrent file, the client (me) connects to the tracker. In Firestarter, I see that my IP is trying to connect to various ports, all of which are blocked.I assumed the problem was that because Firestarter has a restrictive outbound traffic policy, that I needed to add Bittornado to it. So in Bittornado, I selected the acceptable ports as 10000-10010 (randomized), and then in Firestarter for the outbound policy I allowed those same ports. The inbound traffic policy has no rules. All traffic is permitted and I have a direct connection to the Internet (no NAT). I do not understand why, if I have selected the permissible outbound ports in Firestarter, and also selected those same ports in Bittornado, why connections between my IP and the tracker are blocked?

Ubuntu :: Traffic Blocked On VPN Connection?

Jan 2, 2011

I'm trying to connect to the www.freeopenvpn.com vpn service from my ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition. Installed the parts based on the instruction of the website, then the connection successful (lock icon on the connection area) but.....

the traffic does not go through, ping rejects with some "buffer error", network monitor does not show any data flow on the lan card. after the connection. Was trying it from commandline, and from gui as well. Same result. Can't even navigate to the service start page.

I do not have firewall, using the linksys built in firewall in my router. The same (dual boot) machine and router let the same vpn work under win XP, so the hardware is fine.

I suspect that it is a routing problem. (using dhcp from the modem-router)

Found that the vpn module installed the virtual tun0 interface and set up the routing table automatically.

Code:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
173.192.86.142 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 0 0 eth0

This works flawlessly EVERYWHERE except on my girlfriend's work network. When I am on that network (same laptop), I can ssh into servers which use port 22, but not the other servers on this alternate port.Is there any way OTHER than ssh'ing into a machine I can access and then ssh'ing again from there to my destination (which, by the way, does work)? I want to make a direct connection for speed and security reasons.
