CentOS 5 Networking :: System-config-authentication Is Not Starting?

Sep 6, 2010

I trying to set up a LDAP server using openLDAP / db4. The server runs fine but I cannot get the client to work. Client and server are on the same machine, as for now. The problem seems to be in PAM. However I cannot start the system-config-authentication tool which should do the trick.

CentOS 5 :: Running System-config-boot In 5.4?

Nov 9, 2009

I'm installing CentOS for the first time to run mythtv on (I previously used Fedora, but the new version cycle was too quick). As part of the instructions I'm using, I am told to run system-config-boot (to ensure that centosplus kernel is loaded on boot). The problem is, I cant find this option in my installation of CentOS. Another option I have is to manually edit the grub.conf file, but I'm not sure exactly how I should edit it.

CentOS 5 :: Status Of System-config-netboot?

Jun 29, 2010

I am very interested in using CentOS as a server for diskless PXE booting and was wondering if this was a possibility. I have a working DHCP/TFTP/HTTP system set up and going and I can get my client machine to boot a linux image without any problems. Ideally I would like the diskless machines to be able to immediately load an image through PXE and store their own filesystems on the server through the use of NFS.I heard about system-config-netboot and got very excited because it sounded like something that would help me set up a diskless system. However, after doing some research I have heard from many that it is generally buggy and unlikely to work. When I tried using it I got the error: "The diskless directory must be NFS exported and contain a boot sub-directory"Even though my diskless directory WAS nfs exported and most definitely contained a boot sub-directory. Does anyone have any advice on using this tool, or using CentOS as a server for diskless clients?

Anyways, I have a good amount of Windows Admins on staff but our org wants to cut budget so our first "slash" as it were is cutting down the actual Windows based File Servers.So my question is, now that I have this test server up and authenticating for logins using Windbind....is there a way I can get system-config-samba to "see" winbind users and groups so that file servers can still be "point and click" for my Windows Admins?

What I'm really curious about is there is an intial TLS connection with a 256 bit cipher, but then.. The last entry states "sasl_method=PLAIN" - so surely this is not encrypted? Or am I misunderstanding how it works?

Fedora Networking :: IPW2200 - Failed To Send System Config

Jun 8, 2009

I'm using Fedora 9 and I recently transferred my hard drive to a new laptop. Everything went smoothly except the wireless, which promptly broke. I played around with the network service and the NetworkManager service and chkconfig stuff and system-config-network, until I finally got it to work. Now I have wireless, but every time I shut down, I get some error-like messages:

"ipw2200: Failed to send SYSTEM_CONFIG: Already sending a command." repeating every second for about 3 or 4 seconds before it finally does shut down.

These also appear in dmesg, usually about 20 in a row, thus my concern. My wireless device's interface is eth3. How to get rid of this message while still keeping wireless connectivity.

CentOS 5 Networking :: DNSMasq Update Looking For Config File

May 26, 2010

I did a yum update this morning that included a dnsmasq update. Subsequently, for an unrelated reason, I restarted dnsmasq, but it failed because /etc/dnsmasq.d didn't exist. It looks like my /etc/dnsmasq.conf file now includes "conf-dir=/etc/dnsmasq.d" at the end. Since dnsmasq was starting and I didn't remove dnsmasq.d, I assume this line was added by the update. Commenting the line resolves the issue.

An alternative hypothesis, given that I don't really know what the state of /etc/dnsmasq.conf and /etc/dnsmasq.d/ was before the update, might be that the directory did exist, but was removed by the update. I find this the least likely of my 2 stated hypotheses. (There are other hypotheses, but I think they are even less likely). Am I correct is concluding the conf-dir line was added by the update? If so, shouldn't the updated RPM create the directory during install?

CentOS 5 Networking :: Starting Wireless At Boot Time On SSH Box

Dec 31, 2010

I have a SSH box which is command line only and no X, this will be used remote and i'm trying to get the wireless network configured to start at boot. I'm using wpa_supplicant as the access point is secure with WPA2 At present if I send the following commands the machine will connect to the wifi and be reachable via ssh

ifup wlan0
/usr/sbin/wpa_supplicant -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -D wext -dd -i wlan0 -B
dhclient wlan0

This does not start at boot but requires manual input of the above commands. I've just come to a complete blank on geting this to start at boot time. Also I would like to set a fixed IP for this box.

CentOS 5 Networking :: NIC Card And Config Won't Come Up In The Ifcfg-eth0 File?

Mar 18, 2009

I've been racking my brains over the past few days trying to figure out why my NIC card (network interface card) won't show up in the ifcfg-eth0 file.When I configure a new server (like this one) I always go to:/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and from there I usally see the name of my NIC's manufacturer's name and the hardware MAC address.Then it's only a simple process of entering the server's IP address, netmask and gateway and I'm up and running in no time...But not in this case! the ifcfg-eth0 file is completely blank! There's not ONE single line of config info in it... (?)The server runs an Intel core 2 duo (dual-core) CPU with 1 gig of RAM.

I've even re-formatted the drive and re-installed Centos 5.1 on the darn thing 3 times and it simply won't work.The server cannot resolve when I do a wgetIt also gives me a 'resolution problem in the named configuration'.What I don't understand is that the 2 small LEDs on the Cat 5 cable lights up and flash at what appear to be regular intervals here.

CentOS 5 :: Getting "Unknown Error" When Running System-config-xxxx Programs?

Aug 6, 2010

I am a long time Unix system admin and this one has got me stumped.When I try to run the system-config-network (or any of the system-config-xxx programs) from the links on the GNOME interface, I get a message pop-up that says, "Unknown error" and no additional information. I have also opened a terminal and run it from the command line (/usr/bin/system-network-config) and I get the same "Unknown error" pop-up. I was not the one who originally configured this server, so I am not sure of the history or how it might have been broken. I can't seem to find any debugging information or even any command line parameters that might give me a clue what the complaint is. There is no error number or any other helpful hint as to the cause of the problem.

I have been manually editing the config files so the server is up and running but it is tedious to manage the server without the GUI.Has anyone seen this before? I assume it is a configuration issue, but I am not sure where to look.uname -aLinux xxxxserver 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 #1 SMP Wed Mar 17 11:30:06 EDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux/etc/redhat-releaseCentOS release 5.4 (Final)

Fedora Networking :: FC10 - Unusual System-config - Unable To Ping Other Computers Or Routers

Jun 2, 2009

I recently built my second general-purpose server, and recently installed fedora core 10 on it. The first thing I attempted to set up after installation was the network - and that's where it's gone wrong When editing a network device using the graphical system-config-network utility, I find that the subnet mask is being automatically changed to match the default gateway address every time I attempt to modify any of its settings (or sometimes even when I cancel the changes). This also means that I cannot set the subnet mask, as it simply won't accept my setting for it. I seem to be able to get around this glitch by setting the subnet mask using the shell version of the same utility, but that doesn't solve my network issue.

Even when I use the shell utility to fix the subnet mask, I'm unable to ping other computers or routers on the network even when ifconfig indicates that the desired ip address has been taken, and other computers on the network are also unable to see the server. I'm using a wired connection and a static IP address on a network with no DHCP.
