This is a laptop, to which I connect an external hdmi display when I get to work. dipser -e extends the desktop for me, but the laptop remains the primary desktop (holding the panels etc). nvidia-settings can set primary monitor for me, but I want to use the cli.

I do not have (or want) the X Window System installed. I want to change my console screen resolution (not inside X) to 1024x600. But it isn't reported when I use vbeinfo inside grub:

Nov 18, 2010I'm looking for a way to change the balance of my audio in the terminal. (i.e. setting a different volume for the left and the right speaker).I can set the volume level for both channels at once with a command like:

Jul 14, 2010I'm using several 3rd party repos for Centos - RPMforge, ATrpms, EPEL, REMI. Is there some way I can set the priorities for these repos in a bash script, using a YUM command? I cannot find anything in the YUM man page, or the yum-utils package.
Smart PM has a command to set channel priorities from the command line. Wondered if I can do the same for YUM repos?

I'm not trying to launch the gui, I want it to set from CLI and then I want to check the GUI to confirm it did set properly... possible? I've tried gconftool which shows me what windowmanager I'm running (note both "Normal" and "Extra" say I'm running "compiz" as my windowmanager.
I've tried gconftool-2 to set it but since both are already "compiz" I don't know how to differentiate between "Normal" and "Extra". I have grep'd all of my .gconf directory and there doesn't seem to be any reference to "Normal" or "Extra" in any of my %gconf.xml files. How can I change the Visual Effect setting from CLI?

It seems as though the card is recognized, the drivers are installed and the interface is up, but it fails to connect. I have no idea where I'm going wrong. I have WPA and a MAC filtering setup on my wireless router. An exception has been made for this PC's MAC address and I've manually entered the connection details into /etc/network/interfaces.

Jan 5, 2011I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?

Mar 29, 2009I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable.Here is my problem.The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
a) do this
b) do that

General :: Unable To Record Audio From Line In?
Oct 13, 2010After trying Kubuntu live CD, Fedora live CD, and booting from my Ubuntu partition on my iMac, I am convinced that there is no solution at all to the problems I am having recording from Line In. Using the same radio hooked up to an old Dell PC which I am selling, recording works fine. I can see the audio signal when I go to sound preferences and click on the Input tab. Works great.
I beleive that Ubuntu just isn't compatible with the sound card in the iMac. This is too bad because I was really hoping that I could use Ubuntu dual boot on my Mac. Running Ubuntu in emulation works fine using VMware Fusion but dual boot really sucks. Unless I hear back from someone who actually is running Ubuntu dual boot on an imac and can record from the Line In.

--- our internet web site
A. Is there a preferred Linux distribution that will make this easier?
B. What is the best format for audio and video files that will be viewed variously on Linux, Mac, and Microsoft operating systems? Files will need to be played on older versions of operating systems and may need a free or very low cost software to play (e.g. play on Win2k)
C. What software is best for recording the audio or audio-video files? Some additional funding might be justified for this software, particularly if it can also support live streaming.
D. What software is best for live streaming both on the file creation and the listening-viewing sides of the process?
Ideally we would like to have a single software suite to live stream, and make downloadable audio or audio-video files for later download, and not require those listening and viewing to have to install additional software. Keeping file sizes small is also desirable because some of our users will probably only have dial-up internet.
