Ubuntu :: Terminal Is Giving Errors Left And Right - Cause Booting From CD?

Nov 12, 2010

I don't actually have Ubuntu installed to my hard drive yet, I'm still playing with it on the demo CD. I'm new to linux, but the terminal is very familiar to me (iPhone jailbreaker).
Thing is, Terminal is giving me the finger anytime it can. I've yet to successfully do something on it. Simple things like "dpkg" or "cd any directory at all" are being a pain, and I can't put anything in /user/.Is this cause I'm booting it using a "demo CD", or does my computer just hate Ubuntu and I should give up now?

Fedora :: Giving Errors About Python At Bootup?

I had some problems and had to upgrade my motherboard. I chose the same manufacturer and haven't had any major problems booting into Fedora 11. (I was totally amazed by this BTW).The only thing is that I have 8 GBs of memory in my computer and System-monitor now says that I only have 3.2. Lastly my nvidia driver which is working correctly, is giving errors about python at bootup. Something about glib being presentAnother weird thing is that GRUB will not let me interrupt it either during normal usage nor with a live CD loaded. This also started happening after I installed Fedora 11 on my old board.

Mar 29, 2010

i'm trying to install 98se to a 110gb partition so i can dual boot with ubuntu 10 for 98 and 100 for ubuntu after the resize. when i tried making multiple partitions manually for ubutnu putting it on separate partitions i got grub boot errors. the problem i am having every time i try to install 98 it forces me to scandisk it then i have to hit space bar to fix every error i thinks it finds wich is impossible to press it 2 million times. now if I format in a non 98 format and tell it to format in lba it keeps asking for a boot disc, i burned one off but, still kept asking for it. if i do it in non lba, it only saw 2 gigs in 98 and when i went to install ubuntu it was a giant hard drive no partitions. i did try making 3 fat 32s 1 for 98 and then swap and linux partition but, the i got grub errors 17 and 18.

the problem is that bios a cap of 130gb for each drive or in this case partition. it's 320gb WD blue Scorpio. the short i want to dual boot 98se and ubuntu 9.04 with 2 fat32 partitions for storage 110 +100 + 80 = 320 also some visuals.

CentOS 5 :: Booting CentOS V5.2 Fails With GRUB Error 13: Invalid Executable Format?

May 5, 2009

I'm trying to install a dual booting machine with OpenSUSE v11.1 32bit and CentOS v5.2 64bit. I installed OpenSUSE first and allowed it to install and configure grub in the MBR and after that I wanted to proceed with CentOS v5.2. The installation went fine with two notable exceptions:- when I had to configure grub installation parameters, CentOS offered me only 2 solutions: either install it on the MBR of the first hard disk or not installing it at all. Other distributions are more flexible allowing you to install it in the boot sector of the root partition for example. Because I didn't want to ruin the existent grub onfiguration, I reluctantly accepted not to install it for CentOS assuming that I could manually configure the entry later in grub's menu.lst file.

- when I was presented with the options for software components installation, I've clicked on virtualization category/function because I intend to use the machine as a VMware host. There was no guidance on screen at that point and I blindly assumed that by choosing the virtualization function I would get necessary tools and drivers that will help me further on. It seems that this was a wrong move as you can see it below.

After completing the installation, I tried to search for a template or guiding on how the menu entry in menu.lst should look like but the grub directory was empty, not surprisingly because I've told CentOS earlier not to install it. Using the files in the /boot directory from the CentOS installation I tried to improvise a menu entry but it's not working. The boot stops with famous Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format. Using the file command to check what kind of files I'm trying to load as kernels I'm getting :

marte:~ # file /mnt/vmlinuz-2.6.18-92.el5xen

CentOS 5 :: Resizing CentOS Boot Partition, Dual-booting?

Jun 9, 2009

I have a laptop that came with Windows Vista (64-bit) installed. I created a new partition and installed XP (also 64-bit) alongside it.Last night I shrunk my XP partition and created another new partition and installed Linux (CentOS 64-bit) on it. I made an error in judgment and didn't allocate enough space, so I need about 10 more gigs for the Linux partition. It boots up and runs, but I need about 10 more gigs of storage for the files I want to keep on the partition (and yes, they have to be on the partition, I definitely need to know how to do this, not a workaround)I went into Vista and shrunk the XP partition by 10 gigs, so now I have 10 gigs of free, non-partitioned space.

As it stands, when I start up the computer I get the GRUB boot loader. I can boot my Linux install or choose "Other" and be taken to the Vista boot loader. From there I can choose XP or Vista to boot. So, my question is... what is the best way to append the 10 gigs of free space to the Linux partition? Is this something I should do inside of Linux? I have the option to do it in Vista, but the partition shows up as "healthy" but without a file system type.I just don't want to screw up the boot loader, partitions or anything else. This isn't my area of expertise, so if anyone could give me a good suggestion or solid answer

When booting from the DVD, it gives me the boot prompt:

Upon pressing enter, the log messages of the boot detect the media drive as: hdc: Sony DVD RW AW-G170 IDE ATAPI CD.

Slackware :: Lilo Not Booting Slackware Correctly - Errors Inside?

Mar 1, 2010

I'm fairly new to Linux so I'm going to need a step-by-step guide to get me out of this rut. The install of Linux was fine but when I booted up I got this error. VFS: Cannot open root device "302" or unknown-block (3,2) append a correct "root=" boot option;here are the available partitions;

0800 78150744 sda driver:sd

0802 30719552 sda2 <-- this is my Linux partition
0b00 1048575 sr0 driver:sr
0b01 1048575 sr1 driver:sr

Kernel panic - not syncing:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (3,2) I guessed from reading this error Lilo isn't pointing to the right partition to boot from? How will I fix this? I read another thread about boot problems on these forums and a guy said to do this:

#mkdir /slacktemp
#mount /dev/device /slacktemp
#chroot /slacktemp
#cd /slacktemp/etc <-- for me it told me that doesn't exist
#vi lilo.conf <-- couldn't do nothing and was frozen
#lilo -v -t -b /dev/device
#lilo -v -b /dev/device

The above solution did not work for me. Can anyone shed a light on a Linux rookie?

OpenGL doesn't seem to be working [EG: EVE Online running under Wine]. Nor will the "NVIDIA X Server Settings" load giving me the error that "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver" etc... I've run nvidia-xconfig and restarted the X server multiple times to no avail. Here's my xorg.conf:

CentOS 5 :: CentOS 5.3 X86 Not Booting After Clean Install?

Oct 1, 2009

I've done some installations and configuration of linux systems for different needs and I've never had such a problem:

* The system is Supermicro X6DVL-G mainboard with two Nocona Xeons @ 2,8 GHz, 2 GB DDR333 RAM, 2x160GB Seagate ST3160827AS SATA HDD, ATi RAGE 128 VGA and an external LG USB DVD drive.

* The role of this machine will be Joomla Web/Mail/FTP server for my company's website

I've tried FreeBSD, PC-BSD and now CentOS 5.3. The BSD based OSes installed and ran with no problem but I had trouble configuring them and I decided to move to something little more familiar. However the BSDs didn't detect the integrated Promise RAID controller but CentOS had no problem with that. After some fight with the initial setup I've managed to made it recognizing the external DVD and install the OS. I'm using the whole stripe for the OS, leaving the linux to determine and create the partitions. The installation went smoothly with no errors, but after restart I get the POST messages and then... NOTHING! No error, no panic, nothing, just a blinking cursor. The first thought, confirmed later by several posts I've read, it's the integrated RAID controller making the issue.

Well, I removed the stripe, disabled the controller from the BIOS and installed again, this time with the two separate disks - the sda is bootable with swap and ext3 and sdb is spare with ext3. THE SAME... Third time - only sda is configured for istallation - again NOTHING. Fourth time - sda is configured for installation and No Bootloader option is selected - SAME.

CentOS 5 :: Hdb: Timeout Errors After Power Off Only

May 4, 2010

The problems I was having earlier: [URL]seemed to be solved.

I was not getting any error messages after restart. I should have powered down fully, but did not think that it would make a difference. :(

The same issue is again occurring, but after shutdown ONLY and only on the first boot. After the first boot, a system restart will not cause any error messages. (I have rebooted at least ten or twenty times to make sure)

But after a system shutdown, the first boot hangs up and I get the

"Red Hat nash version 5.1.19.6 starting hdb: timeout waiting for DMA hdb: drive not ready for command"

errors five or six times before each boot. Also the system boots very slowly the first time.

I used the getinfo.sh all command and posted the info to the suggested site here: [URL]

Is it possible this could be a hardware issue? This is an old salvaged HDD. Ive changed everything I c an think of in the BIOS with no results.

I have used the hdparm -d /dev/hdb command and verified that dma is not being used on initial boot or after a shutoff but IS being used after a reboot...

here are the HDD settings
/dev/hdb:
multcount = 16 (on)

CentOS 5 :: Errors / Warnings At Boot?

Sep 14, 2010

I've made a CentOS 5 x86_64 setup last year, around november/december.This system is supposed to operate as a home router/gateway, firewall, nas, small intranet/extranet server and media center.I've previously built a system using older parts (Pentium III 866MHz), and had on it CentOS 5 x86.It successfully served the same purpose (except nas and media center) for quite some time, about 1-2years, until i felt i needed better hardware (more memory, speed and disk space mainly) and 64-bit support.

Part of this intended setup isn't finished (router/gateway, firewall, media center), partially because i'm still lacking a good 1000mbps switch and a supported wireless n 3-antenna card in AP/server mode.In the previous setup, i had router/gateway, firewall and small intranet/extranet server working, with a crappy 100mbps switch (the switch is broken now).the new setup has run pretty well, it had been upgraded 2 times, etc...But since it has been installed, even before any updates, upgrades or repo additions, there has been always warnings/errors during kernel boot.I'm listing my specs, configs, versions and logs bellow. all the partitions, RAID and LVM were created during CentOS initial setup.
