When I check socket on my box (Centos 5.5) I notice a strange behavior:

don't give me any result. But apache is running!

I have a desktop computer, running Fedora 13 (almost 14...). It runs also a daily rkhunter and logwatch. But I get ONE mail from logwatch, which contains the result of rkhunter.
On the server, I want also only mail from logwatch, containing the rkhunter results. But so far, no luck.
How can I get the rkhunter results in the logwatch mail on my Centos server?

I have a dumb question but the google can't seem to answer it. When (if?) my host locks up (RHEL 5.4) I generally don't get anything in /var/crash . kdump is configured correctly and works (if tested using ` echo "c" > /proc/sysrq-trigger` as per Red Hat's KBase article) but in the real world, when the system locks up nothing ever ends up there.
So, on to the dump ( ) question - I have to crash it using Ctrl + SysRq in order to get anything out of this, right. If the box is comatose and doesn't respond at all to the point of being power cycled, it's all gone isn't it? Volatile memory being what it is and all; or is there some sort of magic / voodoo in place that makes it survive the reboot. And no, my Dell PowerEdge 1950 doesn't have battery backed RAM, so i'm quite sure that unless i can kill it through sysrq ...

I have dhcp3-server (isc-dhcp-server) installed on my Debian and now I got a question about how it's giving the IP addresses to new devices.
For example: I connected my laptop and dhcp server gave me 192.168.1.5 address. Will it always give me the same ip address when I connect my laptop or it will eventually change after some time (week-month)? If it's not changing it, then I am wrong about this.
BUT...If I am somehow correct and if it will change in a week and give me another random (like 192.168.1.8) IP even I won't change my laptop network adapter, is it possible to configure dhcp server to always give same IP address depending on what MAC it is?
To make it clear, I want that when I connect new device (new laptop/pc) dhcp server would give it random IP but same time it would note the MAC address and never change the IP on that MAC.
I know about MAC filters, but setting filters is when you know MAC address since beginning and want to assign IP for it, but in my situation I don't know the MAC address.
I am wanting to create the smallest server I can possible. I have a small server I use as a print server and for file sharing. The hard drive is about 80GB. Since I only run cups and samba, I see no reason to take up an addition few GBs with major distros just to run the OS. I know it is possible to get a small distro around 50MB or so. I would even be happy with an OS running around 200MB. what would be the best way to go about doing this? LFS is just too complicated and time consuming for the end result. Would something like Gentoo be better? Anything else that I may not know about?

And also successfully loaded raid drivers. In centos partition step, one disk appears. However, when centos installed and entered the system, strange result in fdisk -l.

I have reinstalled mysql-server-5.1 using the command "sudo apt-get --reinstall install mysql-server-5.1".
But its giving error message at the end of installation when its trying to start the server.
The error message is as follows.
When i tried to start the server after the installation, i get this error message
Note : The file "/etc/mysql/my.cnf" is empty.
I have setup like instructed in online tutorials.

One of my servers is displaying the error as login incorrect even after giving the correct password. Once I restarted the Virtual Machine and after that it is accepting the same password to login. I am not able to find out the problem, why the server is not able to validate the password until the virtual machine gets rebooted.

Hey guys. I have a client computer PXE booting from my host computer and it is supposed to give the client the ip address 172.16.0.100 however instead it gives it the ip address 172.16.0.208.
I have this set up working with two other computers and there is no noticeable difference other than mac addresses for the network card.

I'm having a bit of a problem after joining Ubuntu 9.04 to my company's Windows Domain. I can log in and use sudo just fine but I don't have access to certain things in my menu (i.e. "Add/Remove Software") and I can't open the User Manager. I manually edited the /etc/group file as root and added my username (username@domain) to the appropriate groups but still no luck.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a VPS from Providerservice and I am their customer for over a year now. They've been great throughout the year. They had awesome support and awesome Network quality. I Host GameServers and since the last month, my Servers have been giving big lag jerks to all the clients connected. Like one big lag jerk every 5 minutes. When such a thing happens, the first thing I usually check is the Network. From 10 different machines, I did MTR traceroutes and there was not even a single packet that was lost so I was sure that the Network is not causing it. I observed my CPU usage, RAM usage, HDD usage and everything was normal but GameServers still lagged. Now today, I reloaded a complete new Debian OS and copied the Game Server files exactly from my other machines.
There was no extra program or software installed on the server, but that didn't help remove the Lag. So now I'm sure its not my VPS that causes it. Such a thing happened with me before. No Network packets were being lost and my VPS showed CPU/Ram/HDD to be normal. I asked my Provider and they said one of our user is spiking the CPU with a large number of SQL queries and that's why your lagging. But I talked to this company, they've checked their Host machine and they see nothing wrong with it. According to them, everything is normal at the Host machine. So we are short of ideas on what to do and that's why I'm here to take some expert opinions, the following things are for sure :
-> My Game Server files are exactly as I run on other machines without Lag and even on the current machine 1 month ago without Lag.
-> The VPS itself is not causing the Lag.
-> I've checked Network and no packets are loss, not sure about any difference between ICMP or UDP packets since the game is UDP.
The most probable thing is the Host machine itself. This usually happens when the Game Server falls out of resources and gets stuck.
my web host runs a linux server, and when i try to load a file in my browser (which i have uploaded in my web space) with non latin words it gives a 404 error (file not found). for example i have uploaded mydomain.com/νεο.html the word "νεο" is non latin. so when i try to reach this document from my browser i get the error.
View 2 Replies View RelatedYes, I know this is not a good practice, and this is only a short-term solution.I have a server with a web-file-server daemon running internally as root, so the permissions for all files it transfers/creates have a uid/gid of 0:0.This is fine for the daemon, but I would like to manage those files from another workstation - actually a few workstations on a very limited LAN subnet - through NFS. How would it be possible to have users from a certain subnet mount NFS with root read/write abilities?I have seen the anonuid/anongid options (for the /etc/exports file), but I'm not so sure this is the right way to go.

I am having a 1 gb of mysqldump. When i try to restore this dump file, it is giving error " ERROR 1153 (08S01) at line 289: Got a packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes". And with this i am not able to restore the database. mysqld version is 5.0.77.
1) I've got an up-to-date installation of CentOS 5.4
2) Nvidia 7600 GS (AGP) video card.
I've installed the latest NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.42 drivers under init 3, which installs (and updates xorg.conf) without error.The system boots just fine and Gnome sits there all pretty.I can play DVDs and watch ..... without problems.However... OpenGL doesn't seem to be working [EG: EVE Online running under Wine]. Nor will the "NVIDIA X Server Settings" load giving me the error that "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver" etc... I've run nvidia-xconfig and restarted the X server multiple times to no avail. Here's my xorg.conf:

I m trying to get this to work but it's been an uphill battle. I've recently reinstalled CentOS 5.4 from DVD that I downloaded yesterday and updated before attempting this again, but alas with the same result.
I'm trying to setup a small network between my old and new laptops to transfer my personal data. They are now linked with a crossover cable and they see each other.The old one has a dual-boot setup with WinXp and Ubuntu 9.10.The new one with Win7 and Ubuntu 9.10.I tried samba but it was very slow even using Windows in both computers: maximum transfer rates were about 1,5 Mib/sec.I tried SSH using ubuntu on both pcs and it is reliable and much faster, 5 Mib/sec. But I wanted more...I installed the NFS server on the old one and exported the NTFS partition where my data resides with sync and ro options.
I installed the NFS client on the new one and i'm able to mount the remote partition.Now, when I transfer my files I get very high speed, more than 10 Mib/sec but after a while I get a "Stale NFS file handler" error but I really didn't touch any file in the old pc and the connection is always up.Searching on the web I found that NFS had some troubles exporting NTFS partitions in the past but should be fully compatible with them since the last versions of ubuntu.
I recently noticed that I'm having bizarre results with my internet connection, specifically pertaining to APT. When I "sudo apt-get update" This is the result I get with ANY SERVER SELECTED. I tried the fastest server, one closer to me, a random one and the main server, they all yield the same result
