I've got an F10 install on an old IBM machine. I am trying to repartition the hard-drive, but all my fdisk commands in terminal give me errors. I made a DOS boot floppy on another machine so I could do it that way, but when I try to go from A: to C: the computer says I have no hard drive installed.
View 4 RepliesI don't actually have Ubuntu installed to my hard drive yet, I'm still playing with it on the demo CD. I'm new to linux, but the terminal is very familiar to me (iPhone jailbreaker).
Thing is, Terminal is giving me the finger anytime it can. I've yet to successfully do something on it. Simple things like "dpkg" or "cd any directory at all" are being a pain, and I can't put anything in /user/.Is this cause I'm booting it using a "demo CD", or does my computer just hate Ubuntu and I should give up now?
I had some problems and had to upgrade my motherboard. I chose the same manufacturer and haven't had any major problems booting into Fedora 11. (I was totally amazed by this BTW).The only thing is that I have 8 GBs of memory in my computer and System-monitor now says that I only have 3.2. Lastly my nvidia driver which is working correctly, is giving errors about python at bootup. Something about glib being presentAnother weird thing is that GRUB will not let me interrupt it either during normal usage nor with a live CD loaded. This also started happening after I installed Fedora 11 on my old board.

I have AWN installed on Squeeze (AMD64 bit). Many of the applets for it show as a white line so I have run it from a terminal to catch any error messages and get these:
If I then add one of the failing applets that show as a white line it says:

I guess its in loop. when I press Ctrl+C then it comes out of loop. this happens with all commands and I am not sure what is the problem.I have reinstalled Terminal but it did not worked.
View 8 Replies View RelatedYesterday I tried upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 using the upgrade manager. About half way through, my computer froze up and the only thing I could do was reboot my computer. It had already finished downloading all the upgrades and the computer froze while it was trying to install the upgrades. When I boot my computer and the Grub screen appears, I chose the Ubuntu OS (I have a dual boot system of Ubuntu and Windows XP). When it goes to boot Ubuntu, it gives me a blank screen and then a box in the right hand corner that says this:
"Install problem! The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator."
Then the screen remains blank. No cursor, no mouse pointer, nothing. I have researched this error message and it is either caused by not having any free space on my hard drive or that the upgrade packages weren't installed properly. In my case, it could be both. It is definitely the packages not be installed properly but I don't know how to find out if there is no free space on the hard drive partition for Ubuntu. Some of the solutions are to use the following commands in the terminal:
sudo apt-get clean
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get --reinstall install ubuntu-desktop
The last command might cause me to lose previous settings, so that would be a last resort if the first two commands don't work. So my main issue is that I cannot open a terminal. My computer is set up to automatically log in. When my computer boots, I have the Grub screen which allows me to choose the Ubuntu OS, Ubuntu in recovery mode or Windows Xp. However, when I choose Ubuntu in recovery mode and select "c" for the command line, it does not recognize the "sudo" command. Same when I choose the command line in the regular Ubuntu OS. When I type "sudo apt-get clean" (without quotes), it says "Sudo command not found." I cannot find the command lines that would be the equivalent of a "sudo" command to use in recovery mode.
If you hit the TAB key while in the command line of recovery mode, if gives a list of commands but I don't see a way to open up a terminal window. For example, when I type terminal_input, it just says, Active: Console, Available: usb_keyboard." I have also tried selecting the Ubuntu OS, waiting for it to boot and then hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 but it does not give me a log in screen. I have tried Ctrl+Alt+F2 and Ctrl+Alt+F7 and neither of those give me a log in screen either. It is just a blank screen. No cursor or mouse pointer is visible. All I want is the ability to open up the terminal so I can run "sudo apt-get clean" and "sudo dpkg --configure -a".
I've been trying to burn Suse 11.2 to a DVD now for a couple of days but I keep running into trouble. When verifying a disk after burning Suse on it it keeps giving me errors. I've tried Nero and ImgBurn, different burners, different ISOs, different burning speeds (downloaded via torrent and http) but it keeps giving me the verification error.
The only thing I haven't tried is a different brand of DVDs but until now I've never had any problems with this brand.
I used Ubuntu for three years and was recently trying Debian and am now giving Fedora a try. When I switched to Linux I was almost computer illiterate. Even now I only know a little about using the terminal. So forgive me for asking such a simple question.I want to install some extra founts that I need, but Fedora is a little different than the systems I am familiar with. I quickly looked through posts in this forum and noticed solutions using long series of terminal commands. With Debian and Ubuntu I added founts by using a nautilus command to get by the permissions (specifically, gksu nautilus). Does Fedora have a similar tool, or must I use the terminal? I want to install quite few founts and do not want to spend a whole day doing it. If terminal is the best solution, I need a little clarification. I saw people using su in their command lines. Does that refer to sudo?

So why is it if i type cd /pictures i get no such file or directory ? Confused
This also bugging the jebus out off me is i am trying to get into my usb pen drive from the terminal to run a program i have on there.
so i type cd /media
then typed ls

i have tried every this to get into there but the commands i would use in dos are not playing ball.

Still I am asked to package a war file as an RPM package. That is an unusual RPM packaging(To me). If you guys could guide me I have a war file inside a folder, that folder is inside a tar file as a SOURCE for RPM package. The structure is like below.

I simply want that the war file from sources is transferred to the web app of my tomcat server through RPM. I try to package it as an RPM, but its always giving me errors in %build stage. When I try to remove %build from stage from the spec file, then it says command missing.

I had Skype debian_2.2.0.35-1_amd64 on my Debian 2.6.32-5 amd64 and it was working without any problem. After re-installing my gnome desktop environment, my skype stopped working. I tried to re-install it. I found out it re-installs without any error but it doesn't launch and gives me "segmentation fault" error on terminal. I purged skype, deleted the .skype folder and installed it again with no luck. when I try to re-install skype via software center it says: "Sorry, 'skype' is not available for this type of computer (amd64)." what should I do to have the skype working on my system again?

When I try to CD from within my simple script.sh file to the new directory just untared and run the setup commands it just errors out and says something about having no directory or something and saying that it cant make without configuring or something.

I use the direct ip instead of the hostname and have recreated the printer several times and the issue doesn't go away. Test prints go through fine to the printer but when I actually try to print something this error comes up from CUPS.

I have been using Redhat/Fedora for 11 years. I don't understand why Fedora 11, can't even do a vga graphical install, when Windows can.
I tried many parameters, including xdriver=vesa, and it cannot used graphical install.
So, I tried text install, which I have done many times in the past.
However, F11 seems crippled, in that it will NOT do the same install achievable from a graphical install.
It will NOT allow the use of fdisk, and it will NOT allow any selection of any packages.
What is the point of this option?
Even after trying all of this, for a dual boot install, and F11 claims to have installed, there is no grub or equivalent, and the computer just boots windows, just like Fedora 11 did absolutely nothing.
What are the options now? Why is text install so crippled and incomplete? Why is standard VGA mode so hard?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm messing around with a new install of Debian 8, trying to get a sandbox of Oracle DB 12c up and running in an ESXi environment.
open-vm-tools was giving me troubles (resizing the window didn't make the resolution change), and Oracle DB was fighting me with environmental variables.
Well, while I was troubleshooting the Oracle issue, I needed to reboot. When it came back up, I couldn't log in. When I attempt to log in using known working credentials, the screen goes black like it should, and then loads the login screen again.
I SSH into the box and try to run commands, but every single command I run returns "Command not found" including "ls" "su" "cd".
I'm able to boot into recovery mode, where the commands work under root, but I'm not sure what to fix....
I am in the process of coverting some video files to motion jpeg (Wii) files with ffmpeg (great program by the way). I have been successful and so the majority of my work is over. My question is simple (I think) but complex to me so... here it goes. Is there a way on one command line to "batch" convert 8 or 9 files together instead of one by one. I just don't know what to put on the command line. I took one UNIX class a long time ago and the terms pipe and such come to mind... but I forget. Any takers? That was I can write what I want the computer to do in the morning and just come back after work and voila...
