Ubuntu :: Unity Loses Settings On Restart ?

May 3, 2011

Every time I load unity - either by rebooting, logging out/in, or just "unity --replace" all my self-placed launchers are gone (just chrome, terminal and a custom launcher for my email) and the LibreOffice ones are back.

I'm assuming this isn't a bug, as here and launchpad would have tonnes of reports of something so obvious if it were affecting everyone, but something local to me.

General :: VMware Snapshot With VMware Tools Loses Network On Restart - Host XP - Guest Fedora

Oct 3, 2010

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.

I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/

I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.

I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.

In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.

One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.

It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.

The network can be restored by rebooting the image.

Ubuntu :: Unity Interface Disappears On Logout / Restart

May 23, 2011

I upgraded to 11.04, and I like the Unity interface. But every time I logout and back in (or restart) it starts in Classic mode.
- If I go to Compiz, it shows that Unity is enabled.
- When I login, it shows that the Unity interface is selected.
- If I run
Code:
unity --replace
in the terminal Unity will run, but then if I close the terminal, it will (sometimes)shut Unity back down.

Ubuntu :: Unity Launcher - Restart Compize To Default Setting ?

Aug 6, 2011

I have played a little of the compize config. Apparently I change something in the setting of the unity launcher. What happen now is that when I resize a windows to be on all screen, I seen big thick black line where the unity launcher is suppose to be. When I move the mouse toward the left side I see again the unity launcher.

Is there anyway to restart compize to default setting. Or at least how can I set it back that I wont see that ugly line.

Ubuntu :: Totally Reset Gnome / Unity Settings

I've upgraded now from 10.04 to 10.10 to now 11.04, and I believe I have so much cruft in my system that it's become unstable.I thought I could selectively rename certain folders in my root (such as .gnome, .gnome2, etc, while logged of (i.e. from a ctrl-alt-f1 console), but that really didn't seem to work.I'd prefer not to copy to external hard drive and re-install fresh. However, I'm using KDE now for stability, as neither gnome nor unity will run well.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Change Natty Clock Settings In Unity Menu Bar?

Apr 27, 2011

I recently upgraded my clean install Ubuntu Studio 10.10 64bit to Natty 11.04 and whilst everything is working well (except for having no plymouth boot splash - but I'm looking into this) I have noticed that when I log in to the "Ubuntu" desktop (with the Unity launcher and Menu bar in the top panel) I can't seem to change how the time and date is displayed. It seems to be stuck showing 24 hour time only with no date no matter which setting I select in the 'Clock' tab of 'Time & Date Settings' menu.

The clock applet works perfectly when I log into the 'Ubuntu Classic' desktop and I am able to display the date and weather ok.

I have a laptop which I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 64bit to 11.04 as well and it doesn't have the same issue.

I thought it might have been a rouge Gconf setting so I dumped my entire gconf using

Code:
gconftool-2 --dump / > ~/Desktop/allgconf.entries

then restarted into recovery and removed my ~/.gconf folder entirely, rebooted again and logged back on. Apart from losing some settings like Evolution and Networking, which I reloaded, and my theme going back to the default theme, the problem still exists.

Ubuntu Servers :: Check SSH Settings Post Upgrade / Pre Restart?

Aug 30, 2010

I just rented a godaddy dedicated, the ubuntu variety comes loaded with 8.04...(& I need PHP 5.3)Followed the directions here: URL...I did have to change my sources.list, everything after that went as expected (not like i'd know what to expect)At one point it asked if I wanted to update my grub/menu.lst to the release version, or use my old one, I updated it.Once the upgrade completed, I checked the menu.lst again to ensure it was gonna boot 10.04 (as warned by the guide)However once I sent reboot, I couldn't SSH back in, I waited 5m, 15m, tried again, still couldn't SSH then I had the server power cycled via my godaddy control panel, and still nothing, attempts on port 22 timed out & other ports were refused.

I think I overlooked something because, from what I've read here and there this is technically possible, I also just found this guide here:URL...The first user comment (above link/guide) seems to have a tip for what I'm trying.Anyways had the server re-provisioned via my control panel & I'm about to try again, only this time. uh, check the SSH settings post upgrade/pre restart?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Permanent Display Settings Are Ignored On Restart?

Jun 8, 2011

The hardware is a Toshiba Satellite 755 with Nvidia graphics. An external monitor is connected via HDMI. The aim is to disable the laptop screen and only use the external monitor. This is no problem with Windows 7. With openSuse 11.4 (64bit), this can also be done via systemsettings. However, after each restart the laptop screen is again enabled and the HDMI only a clone (with the correct resolution), although the settings should have been made permanent. Is there a way to fix this?

However, having to restart X and lose my desktop set up every time when I just want to connect my laptop to my office screen is highly inconvenient. Is this a bug or expected behaviour that I have to live with?

Ubuntu :: Multiple Screens - Grandr - Settings For Dual Monitors Lost At Restart

Is there a way to save these settings and make sure they are always applied when the OS boots? - reinstalled unity packages
- created another account, to see if the user configuration was the problem

Ubuntu :: Unity - Mythtv Or How To Hide Unity Launcher

May 8, 2011

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.

However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).

This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

Ubuntu :: Terminal Loses Transparency After Upgrade

May 27, 2010

I lost transparent terminal windows in LL after you upgraded, you have fallen victim to the not-too-atypical "Preferences File Use Changed Krap". Essentially when you look at a preferences pane it appears that everything is ok, but actually, the way the preference file is being used changed in this version of Ubuntu and you are being punished for it. We need to get the new version of the program to fix the preference file for us, which is easy enough to do by just making the setting changes again.

So, in Terminal,
1) Go to Edit->Profile Preferences.
2) Pick the "Background" tab. You will most likely see that the "Transparent Background" radio is set, but the background is not transparent.
3) Click on one of the other radios (I did "background image") and the terminal window should become transparent.
4) Click on the Transparent radio again and dismiss the dialog.

Ubuntu :: Shutter In 10.04 Loses It's Save Path?

I was happily using Shutter in 9.10 with no problems, but since upgrading to 10.04 there's been a problem with the default save path - every time shutter is restarted, it moves down one notch. If the original save path was /home/vacri/pictures/image-manip, the next time it is /home/vacri/pictures, then /home/vacri, all the way down to just /

Which, of course, it can't write to. Either way, it's not saving screenshots where I want them.

A friend running Mint that's also based on ubuntu 10.04 is having the same issue.
