Fedora :: KDE4 Forgets Screen Resolution After Log Out?

Feb 14, 2010

I am using Fedora 12 with KDE4 and when I logged in to my KDE desktop for the first time, the screen resolution was 2048x1536, which was unusable for me. Therefore I set the screen resolution to 1280x1024 through the System Settings > Display in KDE4. However, whenever I log out and back in, the resolution falls back to 2048x1536. When I go to System Settings > Display to set it right, as soon as I click the Display button in System Settings, before changing any resolution, the screen falls back to the 1280x1024 setting

Debian Hardware :: Getting Lenny Working On Macbook / Can't Use Brightness Keys To Change Screen Brightness?

Feb 9, 2010

I'd been trying to get into Linux before I bought it so I figured that I would try to get it onto my new Mac so that I could use it wherever I am. I decided to try Debian Lenny 5.0.3 a whirl after reading about all the different distros available. I've successfully installed it and I can get to it with rEFIt, and I have quite a few things working such as the video drivers and wifi. However, I've had trouble getting it to a level where it'd be usable away from home. Here are the main problems I'm worried about:

1) I installed pommed but I still can't use the brightness keys to change the screen brightness. I'm not sure if there's some other workaround for this?

2) I tried some recommended power management packages (gnome-power-manager) but it doesn't seem to be accessible or functional right now. I don't have any way to control it or get to it that is obvious to me. Is an icon or anything supposed to appear on the task bar when you install or what? Getting some sort of power management on here is important because it gets really lousy battery life otherwise.

3) Being a Macbook, there's no right-click button. Multitouch would be really nice (two-finger scrolling!) but I'd be OK with ANY way to right-click with the touchpad. I have a wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo that works at home at least . . . right out of the box too!

4) I've seen some packages called the Mactel PPA, but they are made for Ubuntu. Since Debian and Ubuntu are so similar, is there any way to make those work on Lenny? I think that if I got those to work, I could fix some of the problems above. Or do I have to install Ubuntu?

5) I just noticed that the sound doesn't seem to work yet either.

Fedora :: How To Change Screen Brightness?

I'm having trouble locating a way to adjust the screen brightness on fc10... It is only possible to use the monitor's control for now.Yeah my monitor make an annoying whining noise unless you turn it on 100% brightness, but that hurts my eyes.It is so crazy that they didn't put a brightness control in! ( or rather they destroyed working ones of year past, Why? )

Fedora :: Screen Brightness Resetting Itself

May 23, 2010

My issue is like this: I have a laptop (dell vostro 1400, NVidia 8400M video card) running Fedora 12 up to date. My desktop is KDE 4. I usually run the laptop connected to the power outlet, so my power profile is set to "performance". This power profile sets the screen brightness to the maximum. However, when I'm in the dark, I want to lower the screen brightness. The shortcut keys work, and the screen brightness is lowered. However, for some reason, after about 30 seconds it resets itself to the highest brightness setting. No matter how I set the brightness, it will always reset itself. Any ideas what can i do to correct this?

Fedora :: Adjust Screen Brightness

Mar 13, 2011

Running F14 on Dell Studio 14 with LCD screen and US keyboard selected. After initial power on the keyboard selection of "Windows Key" + F4 will dim the screen and the "Windows Key" + F5 will brighten the screen. When being used, either combination will also show a meter on the screen to display the adjustment of the brightness. When the lid is closed the computer is set to suspend by default. After the computer is brought back from suspend the keyboard short cuts no longer control the brightness and the meter does not appear on the screen. I have not found any other way to control the brightness and I have to restart to get the keyboard short cuts to work again.

Debian :: Can't Adjust Screen Brightness Using Fn Keys?

Nov 24, 2015

When I first install debian I couldn't change the screen brightness at all not manually nor with function keys, but I tried some of the solutions I found on the internet and now I can change the brightness manually (from the power management or the battery icon) but when I use the function keys it takes them like 2 to 3 minutes to respond and cause the system to hang (even mouse curser not responding) and then I'm forced to manually reboot the system, here is some information :

Code: Select all$ ls /sys/class/backlight/
acpi_video0  intel_backlight

Code: Select all$cat /etc/default/grub
# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
# For full documentation of the options in this file, see:
#   info -f grub -n 'Simple configuration'

[Code] .....

And I've tried this:

Code: Select allsudo -i kwrite /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

And I add the following in this file

Code: Select allSection "Device"
        Identifier  "card0"
        Driver      "intel"
        Option      "Backlight"  "intel_backlight"
        BusID       "PCI:0:2:0"

Debian Configuration :: Should Change Brightness Of Screen

I've an asuspro (more precisely the p2520la version) notebook with the fn+f5, fn+f6 buttons that should change brightness of the screen. But they don't work. For volume it's ok (fn+f11/f12), and if I go in the system settings I c an change manually the brightness (I use kde so there is a bar with which change it). But when I'm outside and the screen brightness is low I found difficult to find the menu settings and the hardware buttons would be better.I've tried adding to the kernel the "acpi_osi=" command but doesn't work.

Ubuntu :: Screen Brightness Randomly Changing?

Jan 3, 2011

Sometimes, out of the blue, my screen will suddenly change brightness. And no, not the gnome power manager dimming the screen when idle, I'm talking about it suddenly going from dimmest to brightest when I haven't even touched the screen brightness buttons in the last few minutes.

what package would I file this bug against)? This is Maverick on a thinkpad T60, and I can provide any other information that people find relevant. On what may be a related note, it seems that one push of the screen brightness up or down buttons causes two increments in brightness.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Screen Brightness Permanently 100%?

May 11, 2011

I originally installed Maverick on my Macbook 5.1 using rEFIt to dual boot. For some reason, after installing Compiz my screen brightness functionality stopped working. It was permanently 100%. I thought that upgrading to Natty might work, but no luck. So far I've tried changing the brightness manually in terminal and in power-management, editing the grub file and also reinstalling compiz, all to no avail. Trying to alter brightness using the fn keys displays the brightness panel in the top right, and it decreases in value as it should, but the screen stays bright. The brightness settings work fine when I boot to Mac.

Ubuntu :: Changing Brightness Of A Selected Screen Area

if there is a way of selecting a specific area of the screen and increase brightness? The thing is that I had to reduce my monitor brightness and contrast, due to recurring headaches. I have created a script that allows me to change nvidia settings quickly, but when switching to the brighter setup my eyes hurt even if it is just for a moment. Ubuntu :: Dim Screen - Cannot Change Brightness Settings On Netbook

Nov 18, 2010

I bought a Asus eeepc a few days ago which I really like, with the exception of one thing - windows 7 starter. I like Windows 7, but starter is just bad. I also really like ubuntu, so I've decided to put it on my netbook. I download the netbook edition from the site, put it on a usb drive, and than tested it out - well, my screen is dim, very dim. Changing the brightness setting on the tool bar up top doesn't change anything, and using the function keys does change it, but still keeps it very dim.

I've tried restarting my computer, same thing, I've tried messing around with settings in the battery options, nothing... I really don't want to install it if its going to be this dark, I can see things, but its not very pleasant to use. I'm starting to consider that its the problem with the file I downloaded. Theres nothing wrong with my netbook, everything worked perfectly fine in Windows 7. I use the full version of ubuntu 10.04 on my other laptop which works perfectly fine, I'm not sure why this version is acting so weird on my netbook.
