I am having trouble logging into a newly installed CentOS 5.3 box. I can SSH into the machine with root but can not do so with any normal users. I get the error, "connection refused." My firewall is currently turned off.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed CentOS 5.5 along with the Samba package. I have it configured (i believe), but when I try to access a share, it is not accepting my UN/PW. I have copied the smb.conf file from a working computer over to this one, but it is still not accepting my login. Anyone know of any other files I should check?
I have moved a working smb.conf file to this new box, and both computers have the same UN/PW's
I am having a problem with bringing up a two node cluster.
It picks up a cluster configuration file from another cluster on the network where of course it does not find the local node
I've disabled openais, change the configuration to use a different ring but it is still happening.

I want to use my CentOS-Server for logging incoming phone calls using an AVM Fritz-Card.It should also be possible to notify clients (Linux and Windows) on incoming calls, or there should at least be a web-frontend.Is there any software like that in the CentOS-Repository available?Or is there another software like that, that is easy to install? View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 2 servers running CentOS 5.4 Final, one is 32 bit and the other is x86_64.When I ssh to either server, the session will freeze after a while and I cannot type anything except I close the term. This has happened before, and I thougthat was caused by iptables' rulesBut now I turned off iptables and the problem remains.I tried tcpdump on my machine(client running OpenSUSE 11.2), and it shows that after the freezing, client will still sent ack message to the server.So I think this may be caused by the server.Note that I can ping the server smoothly.Does anybody meet this problem before
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded by box from Fedora Core 9 to Centos 5.2. Finally!I have a 500GB SATA drive, it's partitioned into three equal size slices, hda1 through 3. The old Fedora was on hda1, I installed the new Centos on hda3. I instructed the installer to write the MBR to /dev/hda, not /dev/hda3. Fdisk says I have sector 0 unused.First, the system wouldn't boot - it just looped through the BIOS, rebooting over and over again. The BIOS sees the disk, but it never loaded Grub. I tried re-running grub-install /dev/hda, and not I get a Grub Error 17 after stage 1.5 loads.
I can boot from rescue OK, the grub.conf man menu.lst look fine, it's pointing to "root (hd0,2)". It's either the BIOS that can't find the MBR, or the MBR can't find Grub.When I looked at the disk with fdisk after the install, hda1 was still marked bootable, hda3 was not, so I swapped bootable flags but that has not made a difference. I also appended the new grub to the old grub thinking I could get the MBR (if it is there) to load the old grub and thence find the new Centos, but that didn't work either.Mobo is an old Shuttle AK35.Any ideas? Did I mess up by not telling the system to put the MBR on /dev/hda3? Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling?
Such as kiba-dock , SimDock. I can't install these softwares on CentOS 5.3 64, since too many libraries need to be upgraded. The default panel is not so good.

yesterday I installed my first CentOS system. Before I was always using Debian for my servers. When I configured my vsftpd I was just wondering how to setup xinetd or inetd for listening on ports and starting vsftpd. I found /etc/xinetd.d. But there is no xinetd installed by default. Why? Shall I start all my services in standalone mode? What is the concept of CentOS in this issue?
View 5 Replies View RelatedCentOS 5.4 install, likewise open standard install (For active directory authentication).I have a license service which requires a license.txt be in the users home directory.The group owner for license.txt must be the same as the license service. Whenever a new domain user logs in, it creates the all the appropriate files but the group owner for license.txt is the users domain group. My current workaround seems like more effort than it's worth, is there another way to get this process solved easier/more secure?
- copy the license.txt into /etc/skel
- created a script to check for the presence of license.txt, check it's permissions and change them if necessary
- gave the domain's group sudo [nopasswd] access to the script (the script is not writable)
- execute the script in /etc/bashrc
This is what I did till now and all was installed with success:
yum update
wget [URL]
yum install lighttpd
chkconfig --levels 235 lighttpd on
/etc/init.d/lighttpd start
Must I configure something else too? if yes... what?

Yesterday I installed a new server with a large partition for my XEN images. This partition is a about 930GB. The installation tooks ages and after he finished I was finding out why that is. The SoftRAID1 I configured is rebuilding the large partition.

I would like to sync the web folders using rsync. However, when I sync the files from the Cpanel host the permissions look as follows:

But that doesn't work on the Webmin server which needs the following:

It seems the Cpanel install has the group as 'nobody' whilst webmin has it the same as the file owner. I can fix this by running:

But as the file transfers will be frequent, I don't want the files to be inaccessible until chown is run.
So, what I really want to know is - how can I change things on the 'webmin' server so that files with ownership owner:nobody will run?
I built a home server (NAS/WWW/SSH/media server etc) and chose CentOS 5 as the OS (stability, easy of configuration).I was just about to start tuning the power consumption when I realised that the kernel CentOS uses is so "old" that it does not support the latest reduced power consumption enhancements that Linux has achieved in big strides in the recent past (we are probably still talking 6-12+ months ago e.g. tickless kernel)..
So my questions; 1) I know CentOS was maybe not meant for home servers (certainly its not its primary purpose), but if it is, any ideas of what kind of power consumption it takes (I know its relative) and if there are particular power consumptions that are worthwhile?
2) Do you recommend me compiling my own 2.6.21+ kernel from kernel.org or am I just likely to have compatibility issues (I really did not want to do that) or when is CentOS 5.4 supposed to have a newer 2.6.21+ version kernel?
Was it wrong of me in principle to choose CentOS for a home server when I am power conscious? (I don't have a low-power VIA processor either but a P4 so I am really just hoping to make do with software changes).
I have a few mail servers, a mail log server and a web server running on Centos 5. Now I have a task: to avoid accidental crashes on the production servers while installing updates, my boss asked me to do clones (these clones will all be VMware virtual machines) of the servers (EXCLUDING the actual e-mails and log contents) and then to run those clones on VMWare Server. This way, first I will install and test updates on the clones and - if they will be running without crashes - I will apply the updates on the real production servers themselves.
I have already installed VMWare Server 2.0 I have a few questions: How do I build the virtual machines to exclude the actual mail files and mail logs? Can I use VMware Converter for this purpose, or do I have to use another program? How do I actually do this cloning? Is there a tutorial on how to do this?
If I ssh from my laptop (running F10) to the server (centos 5.2) it asks for the password, but everytime I enter the correct password it says incorrect password. when I do the same from the server to my laptop I can get in just fine. I think my passwords are stored as ssha in the LDAP (I tried clear passwords and that dosen't work either).
