I'm quite new to Linux/CentOS. I installed LAMP from official CentOS repositories and I'm wondering why the PHP (5.1.6) or MySQL (5.0.77) versions are so old. Why there is now the latest versions available.
Is it recommended to use these versions or should I update to the newest one - if so could you plesae provide me some links to official repositories&tutorials.
I've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world

How come there are CentOS versions of Asterisk (for example Trixbox) that has LAMP and CentOS 5 and yet fits on one CD?

why don't CentOS update php version in official repo? It's been a while after 5.2.x is released... but CentOS's official repo users are still on 5.1.6

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed openSUSE 11.3 off the 4.7 GB dvd two days ago. The first thing that I noticed was that the official repositories didn't seem to work. Starting the Install/remove software manager would throw three "Package-kit error: repo not available file (in one of the cases) repomd.xml not found on medium (the url of the official repository)".I searched for a solution online, but couldn't find anything, except for the downtime on Aug 21(I didn't have the system installed back then). The last thing that I did was to edit the URL of each repository by simply copy-pasting the URL from the website, in case of gremlins. This stopped the twelve or so error messages each that I used to get each time Install/remove started to autorefresh.Now I just get one error - WarningThere was an error in the repository initialization.Which tells me as much as the first series, but definitely saves me time
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have this project at work. We are a MS Windows shop, and I am "supposed" to be the linux expert, which means, linux support, it's me. I have worked with linux maintaining PCs at home with different versions of linux since 1995, jumping from Slackware to Ubuntu.
Now, I have two CentOS 5.6 boxes, and I need to control the patching process. the boxes are hosting an application which we don't manage. So. one box in production, one box in development. The idea is that the box in development wil use yum in a standard way and download whatever patches are needed, and the application is tested. When the testing is done (this can take minutes, hours, or days) then the production box gets patched.
The problem is that I need to garantee that exactly the same patches are applied in development and in production.
the development box downloads the patches from the internet, but the production box gets it's patches from the development box, not the internet. I have played around with making local repos on the development box and samba, or rsync the /var/yum/cache, and to change the yum.repo.d CentOS-base.repo to force the prod to go to the dev box, without success.
I am trying to install libpcap version 1 on my centos 5.5 (which supply libpcap 0.9.4 as built in). I need libpcap>=1.0 to install snort 2.9. I tried to install by downloading source code from tcpdump.org but failed to update libpcap-0.9.4 by libpcap-1.0.0.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAs I use a (CentOS) Linux computer and a Windows XP PC side by side, I decided to install Synergy, a software to use one computer's mouse and keyboard on neighboring computers too.However, Add/Remove Software installed Synergy Plus 1.3.4-1 instead. That mostly works... Except there's a known bug on Synergy, see bug 2955158: if you use Synergy Server on CentOS to control the Windows computer, as soon as you touch the keyboard when focus is in Windows, it freezes. (I can still ssh into CentOS, but its GUI is unusable.)
Well, Synergy-Plus 1.3.4 inherited that bug. That makes it, for that purpose, useless.So I uninstalled Synergy-Plus and tried to install the lower version, Synergy 1.3.1-7, as per the recommendation in the comment on that bug report, except: I ended up with Synergy-Plus 1.3.4 again.I tried again from the command line, using yum, to no avail: yum told me Synergy 1.3.1-7 was obsolete and replaced by Synergy-Plus.I had to exclude Synergy-Plus from installation with yum, with "-x 'synergy-plus-*'", to finally get Synergy 1.3.1-7.
There, I don't have this problem. I do think that making people upgrade to Synergy-Plus 1.3.4 is a mistake.It's still not perfect. With Windows as the Synergy server (and using the Windows keyboard), if I try to type a ">" (on an AZERTY keyboard), it types "�" instead); and I seem to have an issue to copy text from Windows into CentOS.With the roles swapped, using CentOS as the Synergy server and with the CentOS keyboard, I can copy from Windows. I'm still not sure what is the cause of this.
I managed to install xdebug from pecl, using the php-pear package from Centos base.
However, when trying to install PHPUnit i get an error saying I need at least PEAR >= 1.8.x
Has anyone managed to get a later version of PEAR running on Centos please?
I've had two centos smtp relays setup since 5.1, and it seems every day there are updates, and about every 3 months new minor releases.Is there a way to "lock" to a minor release version of centos? I use yum update to run updates, is that the correct process?

Summary: Does a discrepancy between MySQL client library 5.0.x and MySQL server of 5.1.50 cause "inconsistent behavior", as reported by phpMyAdmin? The longer version: Windows Sysadmin taking the plunge into Linux. I tried to spare you all the rookie questions and did a fair bit of reading. I'm rather happy I was able to get CentOS 5.5 installed and running, configured iptables, got the kernel updated, Apache, MySQL and PHP installed. Then upgraded PHP to 5.2 after I figured out how repos and priorities work.
I got phpMyAdmin installed and running, then decided to upgrade from 2.11 to 3.3.7 but it keeps complaining that my MySQL client libraries are something like 5.0.63, while my server is 5.1.50, and this may cause "inconsistent behavior" or something of the like. So, feeling industrious, I decided to find an updated client.
MySQL-client-community-5.1.50-1.rhel5.i386.rpm
But it wouldn't let me install it as it conflicted with the default mysql-server installation. I also couldn't remove just the old client, to update to a newer one. So I blew away everything mysql on my server and installed the above client

and that server file. I'm assuming I'm missing dependencies now as phpMyAdmin claims it can't load the mysql extension. Attempting to 'yum' php-mysql tried to install 'mysql' as a dependency, which immediately conflicted with the files I'd installed. At this point I'm wondering if I'm closing in on successfully installing a version that phpMyAdmin doesn't complain about, or if I should even care that it is complaining and just go back to all the repo versions of everything.

Our machine has two NIC on it but i'm only using one NIC, how do i make the most of the other one? I'm wondering if i can use it as a redundancy or load balanced but i dont know how.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have noticed that some repos in /etc/yum.repos.d/*.repo files have the definition "enable=0", I am not talking specifically about the "testing" repos... of course these have some packages tha may disrupt the normal working of CentOS... but about all the remaining repos ( non "testing" ) that are disabled by default...Is it dangerous to enable them...? even respecting priorities and having yum priorities activated...?
