CentOS 5 Server :: Installed CentOS 5.3 On A Machine, And Need A Samba Version 3.2 Or Higher?

Jul 8, 2009

I've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world

Server :: PTR Record Using BIND Version 9.3.3 On RHEL

Jan 29, 2010

I am using bind for DNS services on RHEL 5. The forward lookup is working fine. When I try to do a reverse lookup at the server, it shows the correct output but when I try lookup from Internet it shows something like - "mysite.com points to a.b.c.d, which has no d.c.b.a.in-addr.arpa PTR record"

Here are the files:
/etc/named.conf
options {
directory "/var/named";
statistics-file "/var/named/data/named_stats.txt";
};

controls{
inet 127.0.0.1 allow {localhost;} keys {rndckey;};
};
// Declaring reverse lookup zone
// Declaration of domain name resolution
view intranet {
zone "mysite.com" {
type master;
file "/var/named/mysite.com.intranet.hosts";
}; .....

Server :: LVM Planning - Disadvantage To More Volume Groups?

Apr 28, 2009

I've been using LVMs on some of my Linux servers for years without fully "getting" them. Doing a lot of things by rote. As I setup a new RAID though, I realize I don't have to be so rigid. I inherited a mission critical server with five independent disks

Code:
/dev/sdb1 /usr1
/dev/sdc1 /usr2
/dev/sdd1 /usr3
/dev/sde1 /usr4
/dev/sdf1 /usr5

I've bought an external RAID5 box that I plan to migrate the data to and was planning on this layout.

Code:
Method 1
VGLogVol
/dev/sdb1/usr1 -> usr1disk1
/dev/sdc1/usr2 ->usr2disk1
/dev/sdd1/usr3 ->usr3disk1
/dev/sde1/usr4 ->usr4disk1
/dev/sdf1/usr5 ->usr5disk1

Mainly because the 1 to 1 correspondence is easy for me to understand, and what I'm used to. But I realize it doesn't have to be that way, and I could have one VG with all the LVMs as parts of it, i.e.

Code:
Method 2
VGLogVol
/dev/sdb1/usr1 -> arrayusr1
/dev/sdc1/usr2 ->arrayusr2
/dev/sdd1/usr3 ->arrayusr3
/dev/sde1/usr4 ->arrayusr4
/dev/sdf1/usr5 ->arrayusr5

Is there any advantage to one way over the other? Would using one VG with multiple LVs be kind of like "putting all my eggs in one basket"? Do more VGs and LVs introduce unwanted overhead into the LV Mgr that should be frowned upon? If both methods are equal, I go with the method1. Just more clear to me. But now that I understand the second, I could go that way, if there's a compelling reason.

Server :: VNC / Remote Desktop Access Planning

Aug 31, 2009

I've just been tasked with making our company's workstations available from remote locations over our internet connection. While it seems simple in concept, I know there will be several issues I'll have to deal with. What I'd like to know is if anyone has recommendations as far as software to use and methods for securing connections. I'd like to have communications encrypted, which last I heard OpenVNC couldn't do (maybe that's not the case?). Also, I'm not really sure how the interactions between windows clients vs. my linux server and the remote connections should be handled. Would I need a separate instance of say, OpenVNC, on each client that I wanted to be allowed remote access?

General :: Using Much Higher Kernel Version Than Installed Headers

Jul 18, 2010

Many here know I distribute alot of live stuff and thus many say I should try to putout as high a kernel version as possible for wireless, netbooks, etc.my questions are about using a much higher kernel version than the installed headers for instance; I use kernel 2.6.34-ZEN in my arch/slackware builds but the slackware version contains headers 2.6.33.4 from slackware and so is that a problem or no?I built the kernel from source using headers 2.6.33.4 in slackware and headers 2.6.34 in arch...now, I may be upgrading those kernels to meerkats 2.6.35-r5 and need to know if having headers 2.6.33.4 is an issue?also, after compiling kernel does it install a new set of headers when you do make modules_install?

Jan 14, 2009

I think I need to upgrade my libfaac libraries due to some problems I am having with ffmpeg (the libraries are in the package 'libfaac0'). However, it won't install it because my version of libc6 is really out of date, supposedly (but it is actually the most up-to-date version).Do I need to manually upgrade libc6 or is something else messed up? I don't want to do anything that would put me at risk of screwing up a lot of dependencies.

Server :: Migrate DNS Records From Old To New?

Nov 3, 2009

Our hardware that is running DNS is very old (Pentium 1 Redhat release 6.2), and I want to migrate the DNS Records to a new computer (Pentium 4 Debian Lenny). There is no GUI environment on the old server: no Gnome or KDE. I may consider using VMware Workstation for this project.

1. I don't have very much DNS experience. Is this a painless process?

2. Are there commands that I can run to export the DNS records from the old server?

3. Are there commands that I can run to import the DNS records to the new server?

4. What other advice do you have that could help this process?

Red Hat :: Duplicating A RHEL 5.1 32bit Server On RHEL 5.4 64 Bit

Dec 9, 2009

I have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.

Server :: Migrate DB From Lotus To MySQL?

Sep 11, 2009

I need to migrate data from Lotus Notes (LN) to MySQL system. I googled around, but didn't find much information about it. The LN has an option to export data like Lotus 1-2-3, which allows you to open the data into excell, but nothing apparently to MySQL. I also opened the MySQLMigration-ToolKit. In the import DataBase System, it doesn't appear LN as an option of supported systems. We are trying to keep things using freeware and cross-platform, although sometimes providing final customer products that run on MS. There is any tool available around, or should we go and code the routines to read the tables from Lotus to MySQL using a programming language like C?
