Server :: Planning To Migrate From RHEL 4 To Higher Version?
Jun 3, 2010
we are planning to migrate from RHEL 4 to higher version. Latest RHEL available is RHEL 5.5 and also RHEL 6 BETA is released which will soon available for production.
I've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world
I am using bind for DNS services on RHEL 5. The forward lookup is working fine. When I try to do a reverse lookup at the server, it shows the correct output but when I try lookup from Internet it shows something like - "mysite.com points to a.b.c.d, which has no d.c.b.a.in-addr.arpa PTR record"
Here are the files: /etc/named.conf options { directory "/var/named"; statistics-file "/var/named/data/named_stats.txt"; };
controls{ inet 127.0.0.1 allow {localhost;} keys {rndckey;}; }; // Declaring reverse lookup zone // Declaration of domain name resolution view intranet { zone "mysite.com" { type master; file "/var/named/mysite.com.intranet.hosts"; }; .....
Can we migrate to make version 3.81 in Fedora 14? make 3.82 is made available in make Fedora 14 which has compatibility issues with make files of 3.81 version.
Trying to install PHP version 5.2 or higher on REHL5 computer. Below are the commands that were tried and the response given. Is there a simple, trusted way to get the newer versions of PHP onto REHL5?
I installed centos 5.3. gcc and g++ versions are 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-44).How to install a second compiler gcc and g++ of version 4.2 or higher so that both versions of gcc and g++ are available?
I've been using LVMs on some of my Linux servers for years without fully "getting" them. Doing a lot of things by rote. As I setup a new RAID though, I realize I don't have to be so rigid. I inherited a mission critical server with five independent disks
Mainly because the 1 to 1 correspondence is easy for me to understand, and what I'm used to. But I realize it doesn't have to be that way, and I could have one VG with all the LVMs as parts of it, i.e.
Is there any advantage to one way over the other? Would using one VG with multiple LVs be kind of like "putting all my eggs in one basket"? Do more VGs and LVs introduce unwanted overhead into the LV Mgr that should be frowned upon? If both methods are equal, I go with the method1. Just more clear to me. But now that I understand the second, I could go that way, if there's a compelling reason.
I've just been tasked with making our company's workstations available from remote locations over our internet connection. While it seems simple in concept, I know there will be several issues I'll have to deal with. What I'd like to know is if anyone has recommendations as far as software to use and methods for securing connections. I'd like to have communications encrypted, which last I heard OpenVNC couldn't do (maybe that's not the case?). Also, I'm not really sure how the interactions between windows clients vs. my linux server and the remote connections should be handled. Would I need a separate instance of say, OpenVNC, on each client that I wanted to be allowed remote access?
Many here know I distribute alot of live stuff and thus many say I should try to putout as high a kernel version as possible for wireless, netbooks, etc.my questions are about using a much higher kernel version than the installed headers for instance; I use kernel 2.6.34-ZEN in my arch/slackware builds but the slackware version contains headers 2.6.33.4 from slackware and so is that a problem or no?I built the kernel from source using headers 2.6.33.4 in slackware and headers 2.6.34 in arch...now, I may be upgrading those kernels to meerkats 2.6.35-r5 and need to know if having headers 2.6.33.4 is an issue?also, after compiling kernel does it install a new set of headers when you do make modules_install?
I woukld like to know the kernel command or linux kernel file name where i can get the process actual physical RAM usage in linux version 2.6.21 or hiher version.
I think I need to upgrade my libfaac libraries due to some problems I am having with ffmpeg (the libraries are in the package 'libfaac0'). However, it won't install it because my version of libc6 is really out of date, supposedly (but it is actually the most up-to-date version).Do I need to manually upgrade libc6 or is something else messed up? I don't want to do anything that would put me at risk of screwing up a lot of dependencies.
is possible to edited the default RHEL CD to have it automatically install RHEL based off of a kickstart file that I will store locally on the CD. My plan would be to put a cd in a server and have the OS automatically being installed.
We are planning to migrate our LINUX server from RHEL 3to RHEL 5. What are the configuration difference between RHEL 3 to RHEL 5 for webserver installations?
Our hardware that is running DNS is very old (Pentium 1 Redhat release 6.2), and I want to migrate the DNS Records to a new computer (Pentium 4 Debian Lenny). There is no GUI environment on the old server: no Gnome or KDE. I may consider using VMware Workstation for this project.
1. I don't have very much DNS experience. Is this a painless process?
2. Are there commands that I can run to export the DNS records from the old server?
3. Are there commands that I can run to import the DNS records to the new server?
4. What other advice do you have that could help this process?
I have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.
I am trying to upgrade RHEL 5.0 to a specific SP...5.2, is it possible to specify the version you want to upgrade to versus an update all that will take it to the latest release?
I need to migrate data from Lotus Notes (LN) to MySQL system. I googled around, but didn't find much information about it. The LN has an option to export data like Lotus 1-2-3, which allows you to open the data into excell, but nothing apparently to MySQL. I also opened the MySQLMigration-ToolKit. In the import DataBase System, it doesn't appear LN as an option of supported systems. We are trying to keep things using freeware and cross-platform, although sometimes providing final customer products that run on MS. There is any tool available around, or should we go and code the routines to read the tables from Lotus to MySQL using a programming language like C?
I have postfix and mysql set up on one server running Ubuntu 6.10. I have to upgrade all them at their current versions and ensuring current email service on line. So, I installed in other machine the current versions of the same programs. The oldest server is the current MTA, the new machine is on line but I don't know where I should make changes that allow me move some mailboxes from one to other. I tried reassigning priorities in them MX's records but it didn't work.
I am installing the quake4SDK on RHEL , it needs gcc-3.3 , but I have gcc 4.1.How can I install an alternative gcc3.3, without getting rid of the newest one , and solely to get this program to compile ??? I know there is an "alternative" managing system , but don't know how it works.
I have an existing proxy server which connects to my main office in London. I would like to move this server to a guest in Xen environment. Or i can install the proxy server on the guest and copy some relevant files? But please note that the environment is slightly different
Old Server: Redhat 4 with proxy 5.1 New Xen guese: Redhat 5
