I've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world

When I try to do a reverse lookup at the server, it shows the correct output but when I try lookup from Internet it shows something like - "mysite.com points to a.b.c.d, which has no d.c.b.a.in-addr.arpa PTR record"

Is there any advantage to one way over the other? Would using one VG with multiple LVs be kind of like "putting all my eggs in one basket"? Do more VGs and LVs introduce unwanted overhead into the LV Mgr that should be frowned upon? If both methods are equal, I go with the method1. Just more clear to me. But now that I understand the second, I could go that way, if there's a compelling reason.
I've just been tasked with making our company's workstations available from remote locations over our internet connection. While it seems simple in concept, I know there will be several issues I'll have to deal with. What I'd like to know is if anyone has recommendations as far as software to use and methods for securing connections. I'd like to have communications encrypted, which last I heard OpenVNC couldn't do (maybe that's not the case?). Also, I'm not really sure how the interactions between windows clients vs. my linux server and the remote connections should be handled. Would I need a separate instance of say, OpenVNC, on each client that I wanted to be allowed remote access?

However, it won't install it because my version of libc6 is really out of date, supposedly (but it is actually the most up-to-date version).Do I need to manually upgrade libc6 or is something else messed up? There is no GUI environment on the old server: no Gnome or KDE. I may consider using VMware Workstation for this project.
1. I don't have very much DNS experience. Is this a painless process?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI need to migrate data from Lotus Notes (LN) to MySQL system. I googled around, but didn't find much information about it. The LN has an option to export data like Lotus 1-2-3, which allows you to open the data into excell, but nothing apparently to MySQL. I also opened the MySQLMigration-ToolKit. In the import DataBase System, it doesn't appear LN as an option of supported systems. We are trying to keep things using freeware and cross-platform, although sometimes providing final customer products that run on MS. There is any tool available around, or should we go and code the routines to read the tables from Lotus to MySQL using a programming language like C?
