I had a fedora 11 on a IDE HDD and a raid 5 with 4 SATA HDD with a rocketraid card 1640 After a crash of my HDD, i try too install a centos 5 on a new HDD and the problem is to install a raid 5 without loosing my datas who are on the raid.

I decided to rebuild it with CentOS simply because I am more familiar with it. I had 2 raid-5 arrays on the old server:4 x 1tb -> md0 5 x 2tb -> md1 The newly built server does not know about these arrays yet. How can I reassemble the arrays without loosing my data? I know the data can still be accessed because booting the server with a live-cd mounts and shows the arrays just fine. Should I boot with a live cd and copy the mdadm config file?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been, for some years, an happy user of Highpoint HPT374 based RAID cards, using RAID 5 with decent performances (constantly around 90 MB/sec in read, and 60 MB/sec in write ). Old Athlon mobo , with 2.6.8 kernel. Now the mobo is dead, so I've got an Asrock A330GC (dual proc with 4giga ram), installed Debian with kernel 2.6.26 and moved the controller and disks , and the performances have dropped to a painful 9 MB/sec in write, measured with dd of a huge file (interrupted with kill -USR1 [pidof dd]).
Read performances are still around 90MB/sec, using hdparm -t , repeated many times , figures are constantly around 90MB/sec. I suspect some libata issue , in old kernel the raid was seen as hdb, now is sdb, some driver(s) of the PATA disks may be responsible. I've used the driver, from Highpoint v2.19 , the latest driver is broken (causes kernel oops during format of raid), I've informed Highpoint.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 in a desktop computer with three disks. SDA with NTFS in SDA1, where I have Windows XP, SDB where I had Ubuntu 10.04, and SDC where I have an NTFS partition. I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 in SDB without loosing the data in SDA and SDC. When I try to install it, when I choose specify manual partition, I only find this: Where is SDB abd SDC? What do I choose in Device for Boot Loader Installation?

I have installed a RocketRAID 2300 card on a computer to have enough SATA ports to build a RAID 5 for redundant storage. The card support�s RHEL and CentOS up to version 5.3 however I�m trying to install it on CentOS 5.4 x86_64 if that�s possible. I have tried every way the user manual list�s to install the card�s driver on a new or existing installation except building the driver module manually into the kernel (I have no experience doing that yet). I am able to load the drivers from the diskette but when I get to the window Update Disk Source, the installer refuses to take the driver diskette. I've gone through the support information on HighPoint�s website, however have found no reference to CentOS 5.4 or anything else that could help me yet. My next step is going to be to downgrade to CentOS 5.3 x86_64 to see if I can use the driver diskette while reinstalling the OS.

My motherboard already has onboard SATA ports to the CentOS 5.4 installer detect and installs the sata_nv drivers but I don�t have access to the RAID card with those drivers.

- 'boot', on motherboard built-in RAID controller (CentOS 5.5 installed on this RAID)
- 'data' on 3dware RAID card
At one moment a CPU fan fails and the system halts. After the fan is replaced, BIOS informs it's reset and all the inner controller data are forgotten. After I switch it to 'RAID' mode, it remembers it was a mirror raid (RAID 1) installed, but the file system on it is completely trashed.
The 'data' RAID run by external controller isn't affected by the system failure. Three questions:
- is it worth trying to install OS on the rebuilt 'boot' RAID once again? Looks like if BIOS settings are lost for some reason, there's chance of completely losing RAID data
- has someone encountered similar problem with built-in RAID nd was it possible to recover data?
- will the software RAID be worth creating instead of using hardware RAID to replace the 'boot' drive?
how can I create RAID 1+0 using two drives (one is with data and second one is new). Is it possible to synchronize data drive with empty drive and create RAID 1+0 ?

When I first formatted it I used FAT32, so these silly computers with fruit on the side of them could also use the drive. I've now come to the conclusion it is best to do away with those fruity computers, and stick with linux (and when needed, windoze).
As such I'd like to "convert" the external hdd from FAT32 to NTFS; that way I can support >4GB files while still retaining windoze comparability. Is it possible to do this without loosing the files currently on the drive, or do I have no option but to re-format?
I'm migrating a server form CentOs to Ubuntu 11.04. I migrated the users, moving the config files and gaining the access prompt for all the users just when I modified adduser.conf and login.defs, changing valid uid and gid to start from 500 instead of 1000. When I try to copy the files from old server to the new one, either with rsync or cp -br, the system set to 0 uid and gid. If I explore the mount point, connected with sshfs, I can see the correct configuration, either as names or as numeric data.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with network on centos, after i restart the server it works for few hours/couple days, and the network is dropped. - no errors in the log, only that "Network is unreachable" I do 'service network restart' comes back on- directadmin, dns, awbs- everything works good, but only for few hours(never longer then couple days), and then it is dropped again. I searched many forums, and on one them someone wrote that it is because that static IP was used on the same network by other machine. I had a different server running with that ip on my network before, but it was few weeks ago, and there is no other server connected to the network right now (I have one desktop connected with dynamic ip, and it has no problem), and i still have the same problem.
I was suggested to set a cron jobs to restart network every few hours- i thing that is not a solution. Does anyone have any idea what could be a problem? Anyone had similar problems? What could be the reasons for the network to be dropped after few hours? Here is latest 'dmesg' output after losing network:

I have DELL R310 server with PERC 200H controller and RAID 5 configured already.This is my first time I want to install CentOS and seems like a new challenge for me I've read some articles on Wiki and posts on this forum and didn't find any information how to install CentOS on RAID 5.I only noticed that if there is fake or software RAID1 it should be switched off and made by OS configuration.I think PERC 200H is separate controller so RAID 5 is hardware RAID, is there anybody who can confirm ?My problem is that when I try to install CentOS it doesn't see any hard disks ... I looked for drivers on DELL web site and there is driver for Red Hat 6. I tried to install it using linux dd command but it doesn't recognize. Is there anybody else who met such problem ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to set up an IBM Intellistation Z Pro to optionally boot from many OS versions. One of these is Windows XP. Windows XP is currently installed on a RAID 1 device consisting of a pair of 1 GB WD drives. These are SATA drives. The HBA I'm using is a SYBA SATA II card that uses Silicon Image's SIL3124-2 chip. The card has a BIOS and I've set up two 60 GB mirrors for Windows. I boot XP fine from this setup and things run good.
I've downloaded the CentOS 5.2 images and am able to start the installation process. I'm baffled on where to install the OS software on the RAID device. The installation process shows the two 1GB drives as separate drives and there is no acknowledgment of the 60 GB partition I've already created on them for Windows XP. I expected to see only the one logical RAID device and 60 GB of it in use for a NTFS partition. Reluctant to proceed further, I bailed on the install and am asking for advice on how to proceed.
The big question is
1) How can I install CentOS 5.2 on the RAID drive to coexist with a Windows XP installation? My desire is to boot either from this drive.

2) Why does the CentOS partitioning software used for the install not display the logical RAID drive set up through BIOS (I'm assuming that this means it was set up apart from any Windows drivers etc.)? Only the two physical drives are displayed and there is no mention of any partitions in use.
I am trying to setup a H/W RAID-1 matrix but I am unsuccessful. I am trying to get partitions installed as /dev/md0, /dev/md1 but it keeps going for /dev/mapper/isw...The reason is that I have R1Soft backup and it needs to hook the partitions as seen in /proc/partitions from /dev not /dev/mapper/isw. I have tried to boot the installation with various options but nothing!
View 16 Replies View RelatedI have got a server which has a motherboard with nvidia mediashield raid built in, with Centos installed it picked up the raid 5 array that i had configured as one drive so the os install was straight forward. When i booted the netinstaller of opensuse 11.3 run though the setup, when getting to the partition setup is was picking up the three hdd as seperate drives and not one, so i got to a certain point and aborted the installation and i re run the installer, the raid status said the array was degarded or something which i knew there was nothing wrong with it as i had set it up only about 2 weeks ago and there was one drive missing aswell. So i removed the array and re configured the array and rebooted and the raid status said healthy again as it was before on centos, then i run the opensuse installer again and it went though the process again but completely stop at "Searching for linux partitions" , cursor was working fine , but nothing else was so i had to press reset.
This was my problem, i know kind of what the problem is, but what i want to know is , i thought opensuse is based on rhel same as centos but how comes centos has the drivers for the raid chip i have in my board and opensuse has not.
I am trying to connect a RAID Box to the server via LSI 8880EM2 RAID controller.The raid box is FUjitsu Externus DX60 with raid 1 configured.The server is Fujitsu Primergy SX300 S5 with LSI 8880EM2 RAID card.The external raid box is being recognised by the raid controllers bios.
The server runs CentOS 5.5 64bit. I have installed the megaraid_sas driver from LSI website and MegaCLI utility but CentOS still fails to see the box.MegaCLI utility, when launched from CentOS, recognises the raid box, CentOS does not(no mapping being created in /dev).
I have also tried to create a logical RAID0 HDD on one physical HDD(as seen by MegaCLI) with MegaCLI utility in CentOS.The result was success and the new logical drive could have been used, but when restarting the server, the controllers' bios fails with an error (not surprised(one logical RAID0 on one physical HDD)) and configuration is being erased.
Has anyone tried connecting 8880EM2 controller to a raid box with raid configured on the box, running it all under CentOS and what were the results.
Currently I am attempting to install Centos 5.2 64bit onto a Supermicro X7DCL-3 motherboard based machine. The Raid recognizes the HDD that's been installed into it, however, the drivers for the raid are not included in the install. After contacting Supermicro I've been supplied with a driver package that should fix the problem.[URL]However, I am still having trouble using the package in order to find the HDD (The only HDD in the machine) that is on the raid.I think I'm doing something that's should be fairly simple, but am screwing it up pretty bad.

If I could run ubuntu from the old partition I would do:
SUDO dpkg -- get-selections >/home/robin/package.selections
but
I can no longer boot from the old partition. I can access it from within the live cd. Is there an application which will extract a list that will set the old application selections into the new partition?

I am trying to install Centos onto a Poweredge 2650, with Dell Poweredge Expandable Raid Controller. I have 5 SCSI disks installed, and have created and initialised 2 logical volumes via the SCSI controller setup utility (Ctrl M after boot). After reboot the system reports two logical volumes present.
The Centos installer cannot find any disks when it gets to the disk partitioning/setup step. It reports no disks present. Do I need a specific driver for this controller?
If I have a windows installed in raid-0, then install virtualbox and install all my linux os,s to virtualbox will they be a raid-0 install without needing to install raid drivers?

I start up the machine and face the following problem after some time passes.
1. applications are loosing top bar containing buttons for closing, maximising minimising. they hang up afterwords.
2. i was downloading using firefox and found that instead of downloading files to download folder it is downloading in root. i tried to move files from root to other folders but it is giving "permission denied" message. Later i noticed it has lost all its history, bookmarks.
I am going to be using CentOs 5.4 for a home storage server. It will be RAID6 on 6 x 1TB drives. I plan on using an external enclosure which is connected via two SFF-8088 cables (4 drives a piece). I am looking to try and find a non-RAID HBA which would support this external enclosure and allow to use standard linux software raid.
If this is not an option, I'd consider using a hardware based raid card, but they are very expensive. The Adaptec 5085 is one option but is almost $800. If that is what I need for this thing to be solid then that is fine, I will spend the money but I am thinking that software raid may be the way to go.
