CentOS 5 Hardware :: Using Asus P6T Built-in Intel RAID - CPU Fan Fails And The System Halts - Recover Data?

The situation: computer based on Asus P6T motherboard. Two RAIDS:
- 'boot', on motherboard built-in RAID controller (CentOS 5.5 installed on this RAID)
- 'data' on 3dware RAID card
At one moment a CPU fan fails and the system halts. After the fan is replaced, BIOS informs it's reset and all the inner controller data are forgotten. After I switch it to 'RAID' mode, it remembers it was a mirror raid (RAID 1) installed, but the file system on it is completely trashed.
The 'data' RAID run by external controller isn't affected by the system failure. Three questions:
- is it worth trying to install OS on the rebuilt 'boot' RAID once again? Looks like if BIOS settings are lost for some reason, there's chance of completely losing RAID data
- has someone encountered similar problem with built-in RAID nd was it possible to recover data?
- will the software RAID be worth creating instead of using hardware RAID to replace the 'boot' drive?

My friend has a DELL DIMENSION 9150 computer with 2 harddisk (250 GB each) in RAID 0 (fake raid) with Windows XP installed. There are a lot of documents and pictures installed - and no backup ever done! I have found some pages regarding recovery data from RAID 0 () but My friend have bought 2 new harddisks(WESTERN DIGITAL 2500AAJS) which is almost the same as the ones inside.
My plan:
1. copy each harddisk
2. replace original HDDs with my copies
3. try to recover
4. change RAID 0 to normal HDD in BIOS
5. reinstall Windows XP
I have some LINUX distros (DSL, SystemRescCD, UltimateBootCD on Live-CD and UBUNTU installed on one other computer) which I can use. I read about "dmraid" and then try to mounting the RAID in a UBUNTU live-CD version...

I was using a Buffalo LinkStation Duo to store pictures and the OS in the unit failed. As far as I know, the data on the two 1 TB drives is fine, and since Buffalo uses a Linux kernel in their LinkStation and the format is xfs, it should be possible to get the data off if I can mount one of the drives on a Linux box. I've put one of the drives into an external USB enclosure and attached it to my Linux system, but I cannot get the drive to mount, probably because it is one element of a Raid 1 array.
Most of what I can find on the Web concerns setting up a new Raid array, not creating an array around a drive that already contains data. I have installed mdadm, and I'm running Mint Linux release 9 (Isadora) on an Intel box. When I run mdadm -D /dev/sdb or sdb6, the device and the partition where the data is located, it reports that the device does not appear to be an md device. I'm not sure what that means. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I've got around 13,000 photos on these disks that have no backup (I figured what could go wrong with mirrored copies?).

In a nutshell, our RAID 1 array was rendered broken and we were advised that core lib files were missing and the OS needed to be reloaded... a quote from our server host:"The OS is not healthy.This server will need a reinstall.
Libs are missing." This was after having replaced what we though was a faulty /dev/sdb. So they reloaded the OS (Debian 5.0.2 x86_64) on 2 FRESH drives, and installed the old /dev/sda as /dev/sdc once the reload was completed. Here's the output of /etc/fstab on the fresh install so we know what we're working with:

The one problem I see myself running into is /dev/md1 and /dev/md2 are currently in use by the new system, so I cannot mount it there. I should also note, reloading the OS is a viable option if needed as we haven't started configuring the server yet. So if we need to reinstall the OS and assign the NEW RAID arrays to something other than /dev/md1 and /dev/md2 then we can do that.

I have (had) Debian Testing running on a 250GB IDE hard drive, partitioned normally.
I also have 4x 1TB drives in a raid 5 using mdadm, and 2x 500GB drives in a raid 1 also with mdadm.
I put the two arrays in lvm using:
I then used "lvcreate" to make storage/backup 300GB, and the rest went to storage/media (approx. 2TB usable). I put an xfs filesystem on both and mounted them.
All was working fine until the system drive shorted out and died on me this morning. As far as I can tell, all my other drives and everything else is fine. I do a daily rsnapshot of the filesystem, which of course is residing on storage/backup (stupid, I know). So I have full backups of everything, but I'll have to put a new hard drive in and reinstall Debian before I can restore everything.
I've reinstalled before and simply reassembled mdadm arrays and remounted them before with no problems, but this is the first time I've used lvm, so I'm not sure what I have to do to restore everything. Is it as simple as reinstalling the system then doing a:

I'm running a fresh install on an intel i7 system on an asus p6t deluxe v2 motherboard with the onboard NIC (Marvell Technology pci-e). I've a Centos 5.1 server on S5000vsa Intel board with 6 bay HD in raid 1 mode (2 HD), and working fine until I've decide to make a yum update. Today the Centos is 5.4 but seems necesssary to upgrade the megasr driver for the raid function (i.e. , is not possible to contact the raid firmware trought Web Console 2). I've download the last megasr driver from Intel and I follow the instruction to upgrade the driver with s.o. installed, but when I start the server and choose via grub the new img boot file, the display show :
megasr.ko invalid module format -1 and stop. The linux version is the same in the machine (uname -a) and from the driver (2.6.18-164.9.1.el5). Another question : in Intel instruction spoken about megasr.o , but on img file I found a megasr.ko . I think instructions referre to old linux 2.4

I was running CentOS 5 with VMware Server on top of it. The system died and I'm trying to recover the VM images. The system died with a 'end_request: I/O error, dev' type message. It looks to me like the 2nd partition is wonky - is that correct? The GRUB portion does boot. I pulled the drive out and plugged it into my Ubuntu box to see if could get to the files. I ran 'fdisk -l' and found:

To me this shows the GRUB boot partition and the system drive - correct? Next I created a mount point and tried 'mount /dev/sdb2 /mnt/recover' At that point I get a
mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVM2_member'
Here's where I'm a bit lost. I believe I need to add filesystem support to my Ubuntu box. I've been looking but have yet to find something that says the default filesystem of CentOS 5 is <blah>. After I do find that info, how do I install the filesytem support to read the drive?

I need to mount a bsd/386 partition on my hard drive to recover data. I am running the latest CentOS 5.3, downloaded and installed in the last week.My searches have turned up a mount command, that does not work.
[root@new-host-2 ~]# mount -t ufs -o fstype=444bsd /dev/sda3 /mnt/bsd
mount: unknown filesystem type 'ufs'
[root@new-host-2 ~]# mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/bsd

So, is there a patch to get mount -t ufs working?is there a patch to get bsd/386 filesystem type? have not build a kernel before, so I would like to avoid that, but I will attempt it if I have no other options.

I have accidentally removed vmware virtual disk, my host operating system is RHEL5.2 with ext3 file system, i have used photorec, magicresue and foremost but still no luck to recover the vmdk file. i have seen in foremost configuration file that there are some predefined files (ex- doc, pdf, jpg, avi, zip, etc),
1. is there any way to add vmdk file extension on that configuration file?
2. if yes how can i do ?
3. by adding vmdk on configuration file, can i specifically use recover option for vmdk?

I have accidentally ended up in deleting my root directory while I blindly fired command while watching movie.
I fired following command
#rm -rf ~/<SPACE>*.out
instead of this command
#rm -rf ~/*.out
Things already done:
1) Created /root directory relogged to get some of basic settings of gnome and Desktop.
2) Things went well now when I login my desktop ,gnome environment and other things looks to be working well only prompt on my terminal has changed. I can fix it any ways.
Things I want to ask:
1) I haven't studied much about contents of /root directory to best of my knowledge is it like other user's home directory with some basic configuration files for mostly required applications. SO my question is have I lost any thing important system file or something?
2) If I have lost any important configuration or system data how can I recover it without reinstalling whole system? (My opinion about this is, It is quite possible but to do so, as far as I know capabilities of linux. But I still want comments from experts before I try any things on it because I don't want to backup my whole HDD and reinstall the whole stuff again for me and also my sister's stuff in MS.)

I am trying to create a RAID data drive for my system but I am having setting it up since I am a total linux noob.
The system has 3 physical HDD-s:
1. 320 GB (has functional Ubuntu 9.10 installation) attached to a PCI SATA card
2. 2TB on motherboard
3. 2TB on PCI SATA card
I want to create a software RAID1 of disks 2 and 3. So far I have used the Palimpsest Disk Utility:
- Created a GUID Partition table on both disks (2, 3)
- Used File -> New -> Software Array, made sure both my drives were included
- Once Palimpsest listed the RAID Drive as a Software RAID Array, I told it to create Ext3 filesystem on it
Well.. at least thats what I thought I did. At this point I have been able to mount the RAID drive and put files on it. However when I look at its information in Palimpsest, I am told that the drive is not partitioned. Both RAId components /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdc1 are reported to be in Sync, but the RAID Drive's own state is 'Running, Resyncing @ 45%' (and lowly growing).
My questions are: Is this a normal setup or did I do something incorrectly? Why is the drive reporting to have no partition? And howcome I can use it if it does not have a partition? I have found the command line based configurations to be a tad too confusing to follow, so I have tried to stick to graphical tools - is this a hopeless cause in Ubuntu or is it possible to achieve what I want to do without command line? I will list some info on my disks below - perhaps this offers more insight to those of you more familiar with Linux.

Pretty new to Ubuntu, if you couldn't tell.I just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and cheese/skype don't see the webcam built into my machine. It worked with Windows 7 that came with the computer, and in 9.04. I'm using a Asus 1005PE.

I'm having trouble with the webcam on my laptop. This is a full-sized laptop, not one of the Eee models.I'm not entirely sure what the model or chipset of the webcam is, as there doesn't seem to be much documentation available (as far as I know, this is Asus' first foray into the laptop market in the US).
I previously had the camera working just fine in Windows Vista, so I know the hardware is just fine. I have tried several programs to get the device working, and some (Cheese, for example) are able to get the green light next to the camera to turn on. I've tried running a number of programs as both the normal user and as root, but I don't seem to be able to get the camera to output video. I didn't see any drivers on the Asus site. Is anyone able to lend a hand with this? I'm moving out of the country in a month, and would really love to be able to keep in touch with my family and friends over skype or something similar.
EDIT: In programs like Cheese, the webcam seems to be detected as "USB2.0 UVC PC Camera (/dev/video0)". I imagine it's a good sign that video0 is available.

I can't seem to get past step 6 of he installation of Ubuntu 10.04. I get the error: The ext4 file system creation failed... on single partition (no raid). I chose ' / ' as the mount point, and have tried with and without a swap drive. I'm installing on a Sony VAIO VGN-NS160D, and the HDD was previously formatted to NTFS. There's no other OS so I don't see any way of getting a command line to try a sudo fdisk..

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 lts server on my Intel "fakeraid" (software raid) (2x250 sata).To test my RAID 1 I turned off one HD and start the system.The first screen (Intel software screen) show Status = Degraded, but the system starts normally with just one HD.Then I turned off the system and turned on the HD again, so the first screen (Intel software screen) shows Status = Rebuild. If I enter in the software raid panel the folowing message is showed: "Volumes with "Rebuild" status will be rebuilt within the operating system"The system starts normally... but this message status stays permanently even I restart the system again

New eeePC 1015PEM netbook, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD. Came with Win 7 Starter; I retained this and installed openSUSE 11.3 alongside. Everything works well in Win 7 Most things also work well in oS 11.3, but there is a knotty problem with audio from the built-in speakers. Headphones are OK, but the speakers don't work reliably. Others have reported this on similar machines, and a number of "fixes" have been proposed in a wide range of forums, but so far I haven't found any that work.
I've actually installed oS 11.3 twice. After the first install I had no speaker sound at all, but after a day or two fiddling around it started to work of its own accord for no reason I could point to. For unrelated reasons (a silly mistake by me in Win 7) I then had to re-install oS 11.3 from scratch. This time the speaker sound worked after install, but then it dropped out again a couple of days later. Headphone audio has remained OK throughout.
I'm aware of and have applied the acpi_osi=Linux kernel parameter to enable the Fn keys on the machine (including sound volume and mute/unmute), so it's not that. I've combed the forums and Google extensively for other suggestions, and have tried them - including installing alsamixergui. I've also installed a properly matched ALSA KMP which changed some of the alsamixer controls but didn't cure the problem. Since it all works very well in Win7 and works sometimes in oS 11.3, I conclude that the problem is not with hardware but is something in software.

I just lost my weekend trying to install Xubuntu 10.04 on my pc I made the ps a while back - its built on a ASUS P4S800D-E motherboard and it has an ATI Radeon 9200 LE graphics card. It has a PS/2 keyboard and mouse, 1Gb of memory and a 160Gb PATA/IDE hard drive (I unplugged the SATA drives) Every time I installed or made a tweak to the config it failed in the same way. It showed its failure by continually repeating the first character typed. Regardless of whether this was the password screen for synaptic or just the first character typed into a terminal. Until the first character was typed the mouse seemed to work ok but then it would stall too
I've tried most things, running Xorg with/without an xorg.conf file, loading the ppa kernel and tweaking loads of bios and grub boot parameters all to no avail. So I think I want a more linux friendly graphics card and I fear I may need a new motherboard. Can someone recommend a replacement graphics card for this motherboard? Can anyone reassure me that my motherboard is ok with linux?

I have one hard disk for my root partition and a disk array on a separate mount point. I rebuilt my disk array, but I didn't delete my original mount points beforehand because I was hoping it would just "pick up". So now when I boot up, the OS tells me that the filesytem check fails because it can't find the array to map to the mount point. I know that I need to edit my /etc/fstab and remove the line that defines my mount point on the disk array. But it appears to be read only filesystem when I am in repair mode. I can't force the write with vi.

Just installed Ubuntu 9.04 last night. All seems perfect except on shutddown. It seems to go through all shutdown processes but right about the time you expect the computer to turn off a message says: "system halted [4027.514883]" Have Googled it but no matches. If I just push the on/off button at that point it shuts off immediately

I have installed ubuntu 10.10 for a short time, now I meet a problem:I always leave for lunch and leave my computer without turning off. When I get back, it shows a window. after I input my password, I enter my system.Then It halts, the only thing what I can do is moving mouse. After halting for nearly one minute, it resumes to normal.I hope someone can tell me what happens.

I am trying to start Damn Small Linux from a USB stick on a HP t5000 thin client. When starting in Default mode the system just stops. When starting i failsafe mode, the text rolls on the console until the message "RAMDISK: Compressed image found on block 0" and then hangs..What does that mean? What could be wrong? Can I run the image without using a ramdisk?
