May 18, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 in a desktop computer with three disks. SDA with NTFS in SDA1, where I have Windows XP, SDB where I had Ubuntu 10.04, and SDC where I have an NTFS partition. I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 in SDB without loosing the data in SDA and SDC. When I try to install it, when I choose specify manual partition, I only find this: Where is SDB abd SDC? What do I choose in Device for Boot Loader Installation?
I have 6 drives in raid 5 for data. 2 drives in raid 1 for boot. During install I set my 2 drives as raid 1 and had them formatted. I also told it the 6 drives were raid 5 but did not tell it anything else besides not to format them. When I booted for the first time I found that it was rebuilding the raid 5 and the file system type is unknown.
I rebuilt a server and am now trying to recover my large data arrays. The server was ubuntu 10.04lts before. I decided to rebuild it with CentOS simply because I am more familiar with it. I had 2 raid-5 arrays on the old server:4 x 1tb -> md0 5 x 2tb -> md1 The newly built server does not know about these arrays yet. How can I reassemble the arrays without loosing my data? I know the data can still be accessed because booting the server with a live-cd mounts and shows the arrays just fine. Should I boot with a live cd and copy the mdadm config file?
I had a fedora 11 on a IDE HDD and a raid 5 with 4 SATA HDD with a rocketraid card 1640 After a crash of my HDD, i try too install a centos 5 on a new HDD and the problem is to install a raid 5 without loosing my datas who are on the raid.
I have a home directory which is mounted on the LVM partition,How can i reduce the size of LVM partiotion without loosing the data on home directory...whenever i use lvreduce command it show me a warning mesg that the whole data will be lost...reducing the size of LVM partition without loosing my home directory data.
I have an external hdd I use at work to backup files and transport larger files. When I first formatted it I used FAT32, so these silly computers with fruit on the side of them could also use the drive. I've now come to the conclusion it is best to do away with those fruity computers, and stick with linux (and when needed, windoze).
As such I'd like to "convert" the external hdd from FAT32 to NTFS; that way I can support >4GB files while still retaining windoze comparability. Is it possible to do this without loosing the files currently on the drive, or do I have no option but to re-format?
Installed Karmic or upgraded to it, and the Time Date in the upper right loses time now after upgrade to Karmic. Worked fine before upgrade so it is not hardware.
When I complete the download of the platform on USB it says error in downloading "casperfilesystem.squashfs." I go ahead and try to go through the steps of running unbunt, since it download on the USB, then at the last moment it says cannot mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs)
This is basically the same install process for 9.10. I didn't run into any trouble after installing Skype on several different machines, this is of course assuming that your sound input/output worked before hand and isn't muted.[URL]s

I have a system which is hardened so that there is no yum/rpm command installed and I need to install gcc in it. I dont have any prior version of GCC present in the system.
I am trying to install gcc so I can compile C++ on a Virtual linux machine I have on my pc. I went to the GNU website and downloaded gcc-g++-4.5.0.tar.gz, unzipped and un-tarred it. This left me with a folder named gcc-4.5.0 which itself contained two folders. One named gcc and another named libstdc++-v3. From trying to follow a (not very clear) guide online I created another folder in the libstdc++-v3 folder named objdir into which I copied the configre executable. I then tried to run it here and was told that I was missing an install.sh file.
found one of these from somewhere else on my machine and copied it into the libstdc++-v3 folder. Now when I try to run the configure executable from the objdir folder I get a message saying "configure: error: cannot run /bin/bash ./config.sub.Basically all I want to do is get gcc up and running so I can compile some codeWhat I have been doing so far is probably way off the mark but its as far as I could get from following stuff online.
I had a spare computer (Dell Optiplex GX270) which I had installed Centos 5 on and have been setting up asterisk (telephony) on it. My main computer has broken down and I need to load Windows XP back on to the Optiplex.
I put the Windows XP disk in the drive and directed the bios to boot from the cd. I get the message "Please wait while windows inspects your current hardware configuration" and then after about 10 seconds the screen goes blank (the cd also slows down and then stops) and then the systems seems to just hang.
If I take the cd out and boot from the hard drive Centos loads normally; therefore I'm assuming my problem is not a defective hard drive.
I've spent quite a bit of time searching online for a solution and although there seems to be several different situations where the above can occur, I'guessing that my ssues are related to either partions/mbr and or the bios/cmos. I'm really new to Linux and not knowledgable on partitions and cmos so I'm hoping someone could help me out here.
I've checked in the bios and could not find an option to restore the settings to factory defaults. Should I pull the csmos datterry out? Does this restore the bios settings to factory defaults?
After trialling ubuntu on my home comp, and getting brilliant results, i've now migrated my work computer too. Now, i can't connect to the internet or office network. I'm on a small office wired network. When i was on XP all the settings were on 'utomatic' - didn't need to input an IP, DNS, subnet etc. Now i Can't even ping the router.I've browsed around various other threads and can't find a working solution. I've tried inputting various settings in ubuntu connection settings, but still cannot get it working. (was hoping it would be automatic, as it was on my home comp).
Recently installed a new distro OpenSUSE 11.4 x86_64. I installed it in a minimal configuration for my needs, on after installing a minimal system installed hypervisor Xen 4.0.2. He also set for a lot of dependencies, and utilities. On one of them I have a problem. Trying to run a utility to create a virtual machine "vm-install", but crashes the next kind of error:
Code:
Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/vm-install", line 30, in <module> import vminstall.job File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/vminstall/job.py", line 28, in <module>
I'm migrating a server form CentOs to Ubuntu 11.04. I migrated the users, moving the config files and gaining the access prompt for all the users just when I modified adduser.conf and login.defs, changing valid uid and gid to start from 500 instead of 1000. When I try to copy the files from old server to the new one, either with rsync or cp -br, the system set to 0 uid and gid. If I explore the mount point, connected with sshfs, I can see the correct configuration, either as names or as numeric data.
I've been using Pidgin Facebook protocol (XMPP) and I've found that i'm not receiving some incoming chats in Pidgin, but if I open up a browser and log in to FB then they are there. any idea what i should do about it? Running ubuntu 11.04 and pidgin that comes in the repository
I can no longer boot from the old partition. I can access it from within the live cd. Is there an application which will extract a list that will set the old application selections into the new partition?
It seems to happen when I use memory-intensive applications. Sometimes it happens if I'm browsing and I have several Iceweasel windows opened on pages displaying multimedia content. Now I am working on a big Open Office drawing (large file, lots of stuff on the page) and it has happened twice. No warnings, no error messages, the keyboard just suddenly becomes completely unresponsive. I reboot and it functions again. Until next time.
I've got an up-to-date stable Lenny on a Dell Vostro 1520 and no other OS. I've got some extra stuff from non-free repositories but AFAIK these deal with multimedia applications, not keyboard control.
I have 64-bit ubuntu 9.10 server edition running in a media server for my house. But over the last few months I've discovered that its loosing files! Its not all files, Just music. It will lose anywhere from about half an album the every song in the folder, leaving the artwork if it was in there. At first i thought It was iTunes reorganizing my files, but thats not the case, as i've looked around for them, and told iTunes pretty much to stop messing with my file locations. My boss who's pretty Linux savvy says that 9.10 is really buggy. I've tried doing updates (sudo apt-get update/upgrade) but its still losing music.
I have version 10.4 running on my computer, but when I boot I get a kernel panic. I then restart hit ESC and load a previous working copy. How do I reinstall over my 10.4 without loosing my programs etc? my problems started after a normal morning update.
I do randomly (as far as I know) loose my wireless network connection. The only thing to do then is to restart my router and after that it works for a while. I know this is not a hardware issue because I don't have this problem with KDE, only in gnome. I think this problem occurred after I started using 10.04, but then I changed to KDE and forgot about it. But now I'm using gnome again and loosing my network connection over and over drives me mad
