View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using my ubuntu server as my home router.Everything is working as expected with one exception.y DSL modem is a POS and every now and again it looses connection to the router. Sometimes it needs to be reset and sometimes it does not.Either way, when this happens my ubuntu server needs to reacquire an IP from my ISP. If it screws up when I'm at home it's no big deal, but if it happens when I'm not around my housemates have taken to hitting the reset switch on the server. I'm not a big fan of this so I wrote a script to ping my ISP's gateway. If it's unavailable it bounces the eth0 interface and tries to get an IP. I am running this script every couple of minutes in a cron job. Now I'm getting syslog entries like

I would expect this behavior if "domain.com and anotherdomain.com" wasn't a domain that I hosted. But this is a valid domain that this server should be answering for. In my named.conf I do have the

I'm getting the following messages sent to my root account mailbox. It appears to be reporting an issue finding ntpdate, however when running the following command:
aptitude show ntpdate | grep State
It shows as installed and any ntpdate commands work with no issues, so I have no idea why this is getting regularly reported?

I have configured my Cisco ASa Firewall to send its logs to my ubuntu server in /var/log/cisco/ I see the logfiles populating in real time, but i can also see all the logs are also wtitten to /var/log/messages. How can i make sure i do not have a log redundancy? I dont want my firewall logs displayed in messages since there are now sent to /var/log/cisco.

I'm wondering if there is a way to redirect the logs from my Cisco Firewall (coming from UDP port 514) to another file.
I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4. The problem is that I can set easily what to log (for firewall), but not where to log. And currently the same logs are written to /var/log/firewall and /var/log/messages. I still want messages be written into the first one, but not the second one — it is redundant and it is polluting regular system logs.So how to stop the firewall from writting logs to /var/log/messages?

Redirecting messages was easy, but now I'm having difficulties to redirect those same messages received from Linksys to a separate log file. By default, all these messages are logged to /var/log/messages, and after browsing manual pages for syslog, syslog.conf, and syslogd, came to suspect that what I want isn't possible.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the last week email delivery had slowed down to taking approximately 24 hours and investigation has revealed that there were 45000 emails in the mailqueue. I flushed the mailqueue yesterday but mail delivery is slowing down again because emails are again being queued by the thousand.
The mails are mainly spam sent to ficticious users at a genuine domain hosted on the server.
My setup is running Courier IMAP with Postfix, Spassassin is installed along with Amavisd-new but I just don't understand why this has suddenly become a problem based on my setup not having changed for the last 6 months.
Should these spam emails be being discarded by spamassassin before reaching the mail queue? Are my discard score settings too high (6.9)?
On our app server the logs from the Sybase Mobilink service get logged to /var/log because of that I did a chmod a+rx /var/log and all is well until.... the next day QA logs in goes to check the logs and gets:

three files. That causes a lot of clutter in the log files, and makes it difficult to see whether there are any serious problems being logged.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Fedora 14 (x86_64) on my Alienware m15x laptop which has a NVIDIA GTX 260m onboard. Now I have followed leigh123linux's guide to installing those drivers on F14. The installation is a success and everything seems to be in working order, until the system randomly logs the user out and/or restarts the session with no warning. The screen goes black and the nvidia logo appears and then its back to the login screen again. This can happen many times with no apparent stop insight. This does not happen with the default F14 drivers that come with the installation, I have tried several re installations of the Fedora OS and several re installations of the NVIDIA driver, i still have the same problems.

After rebooting, the X server started correctly, but at the welcome login screen, my screen goes black for a bit whenever anything on the display changes. After logging in, the problem remains, plus my text is somewhat garbled.There are no error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. The only error messages I could find were in /var/log/messages:

Just installed CentOS 5.4 selecting Server configuration where web server was installed.
After install, I browsed to the ip of the box and no apache test page shows up. /var/log/httpd/error_log doesn't show any browse attempts.
service httpd start
OK
try again and no browsing.
Did a :
yum install httpd
it installed httpd.i386 along some other dependencies.
Did a:
service httpd restart
OK
and still not browsing.

I have a logserver.log located at /usr/local/logserver. It's NSLOGDEPTH=100. I'm not sure if this is the reason but my log file is only up to 100 only..samplelogserver001.loglogserver002.log......logserver100.logThe other logs were already removed. I do not have any scripts on logrotate for this specific logs. My question now is: How can I move some logs automatically so that it will not be removed totally from the system. I'm planning to move it locally on the server and compressed it at the same time. My second plan is to move it on another server. Do I need to create a script on this or can be done on logrotate? (note: i do not want to remve old logs)
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe have a process whereby we used a rescuecd and partimage to take a snapshot image of one of our laptops, then we use it to lay down the snapshot on other laptops as requests for them come in. The image was created on an HP (Compaq) 8510, and has always worked laying it down on other 8510s.
So now we get a stack of HP Elitebook 8530s, which will be our new standard. So we're testing how laying down the old 8510 image will work laying it down on the new 8530s. As far as putting down the filesystem image, all looks great. However, we'reseeing the msg "bringing up interface eth0: e1000 device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization." Which I believe is his way of telling me "sorry, whatever driver you've given me can't drive this ethernet card." And needless to say, ifconfig -a doesn't even show anything on eth0.
I'm thinking (hoping) that if we get and install the proper driver to drive the ethernet adapter that's onboard the 8530, we can get this guy some network connectivity, at which point the rest of the tweaks we need to make should be comparatively easy.
how to get the proper driver and b) how to install it? Keep in mind this machine has no connectivity, so I'll have to sneakernet it over from my laptop to the machine.

Looks like the r8169 module that gets loaded is not a valid choice for this chipset. The main error that I see is:

I have verified the cable and it's good the windows machine next door is fine using it without packet loss.
The system is a HP Desktop, just CentOS 5.5 loaded on it (base, with no updates).
Is there any way of getting the build logs of the CentOS packages? I'm dealing with a possible build problem in CentOS's Samba similar to [URL], so it would be very useful to have the build logs available to check for such dependency problems, etc.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter doing a clean base install of CentOS 5.3 on a test server, I started having problems with network disconnects. While SSH into the box, I would be intermittently disconnected from the SSH session. At first I thought it was my workstation, but after running ping tests from multiple machines on the network to the test box, it became apparent that the test box was dropping packets. When I lose my SSH connection, the pings also start timing out, for a few seconds, then start again. I increased the console logging and I can see when the ethernet port goes up and down when I physically disconnect the cable, but it does not go down or lose link when the disconnects occur. I changed the NIC ports being used and had the same result. I tried with a different switch with same result. I reinstalled CentOS 5.2 and the problem went away.
Upon further investigation, I found that CentOS 5.2 is using the e1000 driver for my NICs and CentOS 5.3 is using the e1000e driver. I resinstalled CentOS 5.3, and tried using the e1000 driver instead of the e1000e but it no longer detects my NIC's... apparently they moved the support from e1000 to e1000e. I have spent the last 3 days googleing for info on this problem and have not found a solution. Any recommendations? Should I submit a bug report?

I have a newly installed CentOS 5.4 on Gigabyte G31M-ES2C, I had to change the motherboard since it has some problems. Unfortunately the new motherboard is a rev 2.x board, which has a different onboard NIC (old one is RTL 8102E, new one is AR8132), so now my ethernet connection doesn't work anymore (no eth0 device), I assume I need to install a new driver for the AR8132? View 3 Replies View RelatedI changed a mainboard so the network card is RTL8111/8168B Gigabit now. By "ifconfig -a", there is only io, no eth0.

After I insert the r8168.ko, there is eth0. Run "/etc/init.d/network restart", it reports "Determing IP information for eth0... failed; no link present, Check Cable", and I noticed the lights of network card and runter are all off. I can use "ifconfig eth0" now but it cannot connect to other machine.
It's Gigabit card and my runter is 10/100M. I tried "#insmod r8168 speed=100 duplex=1 autoneg=1" and "#insmod r8168 speed=100 duplex=0 autoneg=1", it can not get IP by DHCP either. I also build the .ko from Realteck source code, the behavior is the same.
if I need to do other configurations?
