Ubuntu Servers :: Redirect Logs From Device Out Of /var/log/messages
May 4, 2010I have configured my Cisco firewall to redirect all its logs to my Ubuntu 9.1 server (no UI.)
Now, my /var/log/messages is getting all the firewall logs + all other logs.
I'm wondering if there is a way to redirect the logs from my Cisco Firewall (coming from UDP port 514) to another file.
OpenSUSE :: PackageKit Messages On The Terminals?
Mar 14, 2010I always get messages like those below in my terminals, that obfuscate my typing.
How can I get rid of them (updated opensuse 11.2)?
I already reconfigured syslog to move PackageKit messags to a separate file (because the messages appeared in /var/log/messages too, and I hoped that was the source).
I'm ok with seeing severe error messages on the console, but not spam like PackageKit started..., stopped...

General :: Open Multiple Terminals In Run Level 3?
Dec 8, 2010I am using red hat Linux 4 I have two question.
Normally in GUI interface i open multiple terminal at a time like one for log file and one for configuring any file etc etc.
The problem is normally I do work on run level 3 but in that way how can i open multiple terminal at at time ? Is there any way...
2- When I use the command

Ubuntu :: Random System Freeze / Lockup - Nothing In Logs
Jun 3, 2011Running updated 11.04 on a older Dell Precision 360n. Been having random system freezes for the past month that requires a hard restart (REISUB doesn't work) each time. Sometimes the caps lock and scroll lock LEDs blink, other times not. sometimes it happens during boot, other times during normal usage. There hasn't been anything in any of the logs (except once, which I'll post below). This happened running 10.04 and 10.10 as well. I've run PC-check a few times and all hardware diagnostics have passed. Until today, i've been able to boot and run Trinity Rescue Kit 3.4 to mount the disk and examine the logs (and do backups), but now TRK won't boot and spews kernel panics when loading.

Jan 3, 2011I have configured my Cisco ASa Firewall to send its logs to my ubuntu server in /var/log/cisco/ I see the logfiles populating in real time, but i can also see all the logs are also wtitten to /var/log/messages. How can i make sure i do not have a log redundancy? I dont want my firewall logs displayed in messages since there are now sent to /var/log/cisco.

Jul 19, 2011I'm running OpenSUSE 11.4. The problem is that I can set easily what to log (for firewall), but not where to log. And currently the same logs are written to /var/log/firewall and /var/log/messages. I still want messages be written into the first one, but not the second one — it is redundant and it is polluting regular system logs.So how to stop the firewall from writting logs to /var/log/messages?

Ubuntu :: Open Terminals At Startup?
Sep 12, 2010I have Lucid Lynx (10.04) installed, and have this annoyance with various terminals and the Help Menu automatically opening at startup. So every time i boot up i get a screen full of open terminals:
1. Ubuntu Help Centre
2. File Browser
3. Desktop Terminal
I have tried looking at the Startup menu under Preferences but there is no entry for any of the above.
Slackware :: Acer Aspire One 532H Random Battery Disconnected Messages
Jun 7, 2010This is a new (Less than one month) old netbook that is just running Slackware 13.1 with KDE.Now, every 10 or so minutes I'm getting a "Battery disconnected/Not found" error and it's insisting I plug in.Now, the battery itself is fine since by ignoring these messages, I'm getting 5-6 hours battery life easily but none the less. It's a concern.It appears to be software related rather than a bad battery.Has anyone experienced this and/or know of a solution?

Someone told me that it was due to the font size being large, but I don't want to use the obvious fix and decrease the font size. (I'm using the GNOME desktop, I hated Unity.)

General :: Open Source Monitoring And Overlapping IP Space
Jan 19, 2010I'm faced with standing up an open source NMS and am deep into Zenoss Core. I'm evaluating distributed collectors that will be deployed behind a customer NAT/Firewall. Cool, this works. What if the customer IP space overlaps with an existing customer IP space? From a management perspective Zenoss distinguishes devices by IP. So it will refuse to add duplicate addresses. To get multi-realm IP functionality, It would require purchasing a subscription to enterprise license.
So my pickle, do I spend weeks or months hacking the Zenoss sub structure to duplicate that? Do I somehow remap the IPs through site to site VPN at the router? Or do I look for a different open source solution?Does anyone know of an open source NMS solution that addresses overlapping IP space and can do distributed collectors? I have posted a question on Zabbix forums asking if the distributed monitoring they have will do this. But I hope that someone else has tackled this and succeeded.
General :: No Space Left On Device Error With Plenty Of Free INodes After Cross Compiler Setup
Jan 15, 2011I have searched google for a couple of days, and I keep hearing about an INode limit on filesystems, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Now whenever I try to download something, watch a ..... video, or listen to Pandora radio, it just stops playing after 2 seconds. Downloading says "No space left on device".I also get the error as root.I do have 5% and more free of HDD space. After reading the similar posts I checked all of this, so if I am overlooking something on the forum, I apologize for an extra post about.

Debian Multimedia :: When Open Some Video On The Net The System Logs Out
Mar 20, 2011When i open some video on the net, the system logs out (especially when i open ..... video). I suspect its flash (current version is 10.02). Is there any way how to fix this? Or how to downgrade to minor version.
Another thing as well. By default i have GNOME version. Just installed the KDE full package from synpatic. when i try to log in with kde manager same like the flash, it logs me out to welcome screen.

I tried to uninstall firefox, which is what got me in this mess in the first place, the log claims it will remove ~240 mb but failes on a "E: Write error - write (28 No space left on device)" [URL] If I could juggle something onto an external hard drive so I can uninstall firefox I would be out of the wood. Failing that I believe a new install is in order.

I was wondering if there is any particular reason Firefox opens the pictures in random order. It would make more sense for it to open them according to their order (by date) in the Konqueror window I had the folder open in.
