CentOS 5 Server :: Rotating Named Logs Via Syslog.conf?

Mar 1, 2010

OS CentOS 5.4 I have a DNS server that is logging all named and dns requests to the chrooted named directory. By default named logs to /var/log/messages but I want to isolate all the dns queries and requests to separate files. I know I can add entries to /etc/syslog.conf to "roll" the logs and logrotate should pick them up but fuzzy as to the syntax. I don't know what "tag" to use in the first fieild. for example

# Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher.
# Don't log private authentication messages!
*.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none/var/log/messages

Here is the logging section of my named.conf

# pwd
# /var/named/chroot/etc
logging

CentOS 5 Server :: Stop Apache Logs (access/error/ssl) From Being Deleted?

Apr 22, 2009

I don't mind that apache logs "rotate". By that, I mean that periodically the most recent log is renamed "*.1" and the older logs are bumped up a number In my particular situation, I do mind that the log that was "*.4" is deleted rather than being renamed to "*.5" when that periodic renaming happens.

I know most of the other /var/log files have the same behavior. What does this? Can I change it so my apache logs are "rotated" up but aren't deleted? I know this will take some hard drive space, but I have a lot of it.

EDIT: CentOS 5.3, kernel 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5, Apache 2.2.3

Server :: Build The Virtual Machines To Exclude The Actual Mail Files And Mail Logs From CentOS?

Oct 12, 2010

I have to administer a few mail servers, a mail log server, 4 nameservers and a web server -all running on Centos 5 server distributions. Now I have a task: to avoid accidental crashes on the production servers while installing updates, my boss asked me to do clones (these clones will all be VMware virtual machines) of the servers (EXCLUDING the actual e-mails and mail log contents) and then to run those clones on VMWare Server. This way, first I will install and test updates on the clones and - if they will be running without crashes - I will apply the updates on the real production servers themselves. I have already installed VMWare Server 2.0 I have a few questions:

- How do I build the virtual machines to exclude the actual mail files and mail logs? Can I use VMware Converter for this purpose, or do I have to use another program?
- How do I actually do this cloning? Is there a tutorial on how to do this?

Hardware :: Centos 5.5 System Hangs / Freezes Up More Frequently - Workaround This?

Aug 10, 2010

I recently installed centos 5.5 on a new system, details below. All worked fine for a couple of weeks, then the system froze up. No network access, no keyboard/mouse, blank screen. Had to reboot. Happened again about a week later. Then started happening every couple of days, then daily, and today it happened three times.

I see nothing unusual in any of the logs. The freezing does not seem to be correlated with any particular activity. Happened in both gnome and kde. While it's up, everything seems to work fine. I looked on the intel site for a new driver for this chipset but didn't find a linux version. I tried different versions of this same kernel (PAE, centosplus etc) but have not tried an older kernel.

I installed memtest86 (with yum) but when I try to start it from grub, the screen goes blank for a few seconds, then it reboots. Can't get it to start. Tried a bootable memtest86 cd that worked before (couple of years ago) and it wouldn't boot from it (bios is set to boot first from cd). Maybe this is a strong hint?

My next steps are to burn a new cd of memtest86 and try that. And/or to start removing ram to see if any of them are the culprit. In the meantime I'm asking if any of you have had similar problems with this architecture, or have other suggestions of things I could try. I don't have pieces of hardware lying around that I can easily swap in and out, unfortunately. If all this fails I'll try FC13. Any advice on whether or not you think that might fix the problem would be appreciated, before I go to the trouble.code...

CentOS 5 :: Start Cup-lpd Without Rebooting?

Dec 9, 2009

I just installed a CentOS 5.4 x 64 on a customer's server last Saturday. I use lpr/lpd to print through this server to our network printers.

yum install cups-lpd
Edit /etc/xinetd.d/cups-lpd: disable = no

I did several restarts on /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups. I even did a "kill -SIGHUP 0" and a "kill -SIGHUP pid_xinetd". No joy. I finally gave up and rebooted: joy. Shades of Windows.

What did I miss? How do I start cup-lpd after yum without rebooting.

CentOS 5 :: Xen Not Starting - After Doing A Regular Software Update On A 5.5 Box - And Rebooting

Jun 21, 2010

After doing a regular software update on a 5.5 box (and rebooting), I now have problems starting xen (version "xen-3.0.3-105.el5_5.3.x86_64").

Running "/etc/init.d/xend start" yields no output, and checking the script, I see that the script halts if "/proc/xen" doesn't exist.

Checking the filesystem, I find that the "/proc/xen" entry is indeed gone. Restarting the CentOS box does not help.

Should I reinstall Xen? If so, should I remove any portions of Xen before I do?

Update:

When I run /usr/sbin/xend I get:

Server :: Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 With Lamp Frequently Drops Connection?

Mar 17, 2010

I am far too often getting connections dropped when trying to load web pages from my local server. From my mac running Safari I get the error message "Safari can't open the page...because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection." From Firefox on my Ubuntu 0.10 desktop it opens the window that says "You have chosen to open index.php..." and ask if I should edit the file or save it. When I tail the apache2 access.log it shows the previous successful page load but the one that failed is not mentioned. Server :: Oracle CRS Rebooting Node?

Nov 2, 2010

I am running a 5 node 11g RAC cluster with cluster ready services. The hardware is HP BL460g6 with virtual connect modules on each chassis. The OS is RHEL5.5, 2 Qlogic 4G fibre cards, 2 Broadcom NICs bonded, and the backend disk is all Hitachi 15k. The issue that I'm seeing is periodically each day there are spikes in I/O waits for disk writes, and sometimes that will cause a node or 2 to reboot when CRS can't communicate with the other nodes. Both nodes that have been evicted, are on the same chassis. What I've checked is, the backend storage is not seeing ANY high utilization, in fact it's running at less than 10% all the time. The network is 10G, and is not showing errors on the switch, or on the blades themselves. The redo logs have a 10M buffer cache, and are running on ASM disk. What other information would be beneficial to check? I am seeing nothing in the logs as to any errors, or waits for disk writes. I believe it's a software issue, but am lost as to how to prove it. These aren't the only nodes experiencing periodic high I/O waits, and it happens at the exact same time on all systems, whether they run ASM or are part of a cluster.

I can boot into the rescue system, mount the system partitions and chroot in to the filesystem. In this state I also can run my services, including apache2 and mysql. I'm planning to move it locally on the server and compressed it at the same time. My second plan is to move it on another server. Do I need to create a script on this or can be done on logrotate? Red Hat / Fedora :: Server Rebooting No Kernel Panic Halt?

Here is the messages I see before and after the server restart. I had thought that when a kernel panics, it is supposed to halt the system and not reboot it. My /proc/sys/kernel/panic is set to 0. I can run an update but want to have some sort of idea what is causing the issue and if the update will fix anything.
