CentOS 5 Networking :: System-config-authentication Is Not Starting?

I trying to set up a LDAP server using openLDAP / db4. The server runs fine but I cannot get the client to work. Client and server are on the same machine, as for now. The problem seems to be in PAM. However I cannot start the system-config-authentication tool which should do the trick.

Ubuntu Servers :: Bind9 Not Starting On Boot

Mar 2, 2011

Since I have not gotten anything on the "General Help" I am posting this here: When a Ubuntu 10.10 I have starts up apache2, MySQL and postfix start properly but bind9 doesn't. Once booted is I run 'sudo /etc/init.d/bind9 start' it starts. The only thing odd on this system is I have a "inet6 v4tunnel" interface defined in my /etc/network/interfaces. From booting in the syslog there is:

Code:

/var/log/syslog:Feb 28 19:02:42 ubuntu named[1029]: starting BIND 9.7.1-P2 -u bind -d 9
/var/log/syslog:Feb 28 19:02:42 ubuntu named[1029]: built with '--prefix=/usr' '--mandir=/usr/share/man' '--infodir=/usr/share/info' '--sysconfdir=/etc/bind'

[code]....

Even with the bind debug level at set at 90 I do not get any more in the logs that what I posted before. The lack of errors in the logs is giving me no idea where to start. I commented out the IPv6 tunnel interface and rebooted and still no help. bind still is not starting at boot. OK, it is not a permissions issue, I have changed the config and zone files to be owned by bind:bind, root:bind, root:root and bind:root and it has made no difference. Doing a fresh install on a Virtual Box VM and configure it in a similar manner bind9 starts normally. (I am almost to the point where I will rebuild the box)

Server :: Bind9 Config Files: Leading Whitespace Requirements?

Apr 19, 2011

Is leading whitespace significant in bind9 config files? This reverse lookup file (/var/chroot/bind9/etc/bind/zones/rev.168.168.192.in-addr.arpa) did not work; /var/log/messages had "zone 168.168.192.in-addr.arpa/IN: has no NS records".Inserting 3 spaces before IN in the NS line fixed it:

Code:

; IP Address-to-Host DNS Pointers for the 192.168.168.0 subnet
@ IN SOA CW8vDS.localdomain. hostmaster.localdomain. (
2011041901 ; serial
8H ; refresh

[code]...

Reading the man pages and netsearching, I did not find anything about indentation requirements except for "This is usually indented for readability, but the indents are required syntactically" here.Although the above file works, named-checkconf reports an error in it:

Code:

root@CW8vDS:/var/chroot/bind9/etc/bind/zones# named-checkconf rev.168.168.192.in-addr.arpa
rev.168.168.192.in-addr.arpa:1: syntax error near ';'

but named initialisation does not log any errors or warnings in /var/log/messages when processing this file except "/etc/bind/zones/rev.168.168.192.in-addr.arpa:2: no TTL specified; using SOA MINTTL instead".

CentOS 5 Networking :: DNSMasq Update Looking For Config File

May 26, 2010

I did a yum update this morning that included a dnsmasq update. Subsequently, for an unrelated reason, I restarted dnsmasq, but it failed because /etc/dnsmasq.d didn't exist. It looks like my /etc/dnsmasq.conf file now includes "conf-dir=/etc/dnsmasq.d" at the end. Since dnsmasq was starting and I didn't remove dnsmasq.d, I assume this line was added by the update. Commenting the line resolves the issue.

An alternative hypothesis, given that I don't really know what the state of /etc/dnsmasq.conf and /etc/dnsmasq.d/ was before the update, might be that the directory did exist, but was removed by the update. I find this the least likely of my 2 stated hypotheses. (There are other hypotheses, but I think they are even less likely). Am I correct is concluding the conf-dir line was added by the update? If so, shouldn't the updated RPM create the directory during install?

CentOS 5 Networking :: NIC Card And Config Won't Come Up In The Ifcfg-eth0 File?

Mar 18, 2009

I've been racking my brains over the past few days trying to figure out why my NIC card (network interface card) won't show up in the ifcfg-eth0 file.When I configure a new server (like this one) I always go to:/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and from there I usally see the name of my NIC's manufacturer's name and the hardware MAC address.Then it's only a simple process of entering the server's IP address, netmask and gateway and I'm up and running in no time...But not in this case! the ifcfg-eth0 file is completely blank! There's not ONE single line of config info in it... (?)The server runs an Intel core 2 duo (dual-core) CPU with 1 gig of RAM.

I've even re-formatted the drive and re-installed Centos 5.1 on the darn thing 3 times and it simply won't work.The server cannot resolve when I do a wgetIt also gives me a 'resolution problem in the named configuration'.What I don't understand is that the 2 small LEDs on the Cat 5 cable lights up and flash at what appear to be regular intervals here.

CentOS 5 Server :: Cannot Get Bind9 Internal View Served To Connecting Vpn Client.

Sep 25, 2010

I have a white slate centos 5.5 installation on a virtual box at Media Temple (one of their new VE servers). I am trying to create a development environment where I can have Bind9 serve up one set of zone files to me and other developers on the internal network and another set of zone files to external requests (ie... using the views feature). I would like to be able to develop for sites for which the dns is not yet pointed at my server. The network is created by having the VE server be an OpenVPN server, and connecting my client box to the server (my mac - 10.8.0.6 / my ve server 10.8.0.1).

I have the connections working fine, I have also been able to route all network traffic from my mac through the vpn to the server. For some reason, I cannot get the DNS server on the ve server to serve me an internal view zone file. When my vpn is on, I cannot ping or navigate to any web pages from my mac. I think this is because my ve server is not setup as a dhcp server and the ip tables are not setup to allow all internal requests to use the server to go get web pages.

I cannot view-ping anything else from my mac/client when on the vpn, I can successfully ping any website my ve is authoritative for. This tells me that my ping is obviously going over the vpn, and thus an internal request, but the external zone file is still served up. The following is my named config.

acl "lan_hosts" {
10.8.0.0/24;
127.0.0.1;
};

Server :: Getting An Error While Changing Sendmail Config File?

I am trying to change the configuration of sendmail so that I can relay mail through google smtp server as suggested here.

First I ran 'm4 sendmail,mc > sendmail.cf' with the original .mc file that came with Fedora 10. There was no error.

I added the following lines.

Quote:

TRUST_AUTH_MECH(`EXTERNAL DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 LOGIN PLAIN')dnl
define(`confAUTH_MECHANISMS', `EXTERNAL GSSAPI DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 LOGIN PLAIN')dnl
FEATURE(`authinfo','hash /etc/mail/auth/client-info.db')dnl
define(`SMART_HOST',`smtp.gmail.com')dnl
define(`RELAY_MAILER_ARGS, `TCP $h 587′)
define(`ESMTP_MAILER_ARGS, `TCP $h 587′)

I ran ''m4 sendmail,mc > sendmail.cf' again and got this message:
Quote:

m4:/usr/share/sendmail-cf/mailer/procmail.m4:33: ERROR: end of file in argument list

I did not change anything in the procmail.m4 file. What do you think caused this error?

Ubuntu Networking :: Bind9 Forwarding / Caching DNS For VPN

Jan 6, 2010

I have Ubuntu 9.10 PC on my home network acting as a VPN gateway. It is using vpnc & iptables to provide access to the remote network - other computers on my local network have routing rules in place to go via the Ubuntu gateway if trying to reach an IP on the remote network. This works just fine, except DNS lookups for names on the remote network don't work.

I'm trying to solve this by using Bind9 on the gateway, so it can act as DNS for the local network. I don't want to create excess VPN traffic or load on the remote DNS, so I want the gateway to forward the lookup to my ISPs DNS first and if the name is not found then try the remote network DNS. Is this possible, or is there another (better) way around this? The Bind9 configs seem to admit multiple DNSs, but use them in a failover sense - only using secondary DNSs when the first one in the list is not reachable at all.

Networking :: BIND9 Fails With Specific Setup

Apr 3, 2010

when i try to set up bind9 to resolve the top level of the name it cant do it. for current sake of arguement i have 4 servers on the network

192.168.0.200 diana.undernets.lan
192.168.0.201 jen.undernets.lan
192.168.0.202 amanda.undernets.lan
192.168.0.203 alex.undernets.lan

those are the IP addresses of the servers and their respective hostnames
so if i send a request for anything to just undernets.lan it will fail because there is no record for that. so i added this to the bottom of the zone record

Code:
IN CNAME amanda

thinking that a blank would refer to the top of the zone

here is my named.conf.local which is called in my named.conf

Code:
zone "undernets.lan" {
type master;
file "/etc/bind/undernets.db";
};
zone "0.168.192.in-addr.arpa" {

[Code]....

i want to be able to lookup undernets.lan and it give me the IP address of amanda.undernets.lan

Networking :: Bind9 + Rbldnsd For Porn Blocking?

Sep 5, 2010

I'm trying to configure bind9 to block porn by having it pretend to be authoritative for a list of porn domains. It can then return a "fake" IP for the port sites, which points to a page on my server. So far, the only way I have found to do in this in bind requires a separate zone for each porn domain. This doesn't work because of memory problems - I have 1000's of porn domains to block.

I'd like to instead have bind forward queries to rbldnsd, which can take a list of domains in a "data set" file, and use it to return a single A record (pointing to my "access denied" page). However, I think this will not work because I would still need a separate "zone" for each porn domain name.

Ubuntu :: 10.4: Networking - Using Bind9 And Dhcp3 - Properly Configure Static Wired Connection?

Jun 15, 2010

v10.4 {I have completely re-edited this thread because I have started over fresh. I am no longer using bind9, but now using the installation-defaults nameserver and dhcp and trying to get a handle on how things ought to be setup properly. My previous attempts was a disaster.}

Coming fresh out of a newly installed 10.4, I obviously was able to get network connectivity but then I ran into trouble the minute that I tried to change eth0/eth1 connections via network-manager's applet. What I found was, that when I attempted to define static connections, all bets were off. It seems that once one attempts to change eth0/eth1 which are wired devices, I was no longer able to recover my network connectivity!

I was however able to setup a wireless connection, so in this way I was able to get back network (and Internet) connectivity, and write this thread on this forum. I notice also, that there is no longer 'Networks' in the System->Administration menus! Geez, what the hell is going on? how to properly configure my static wired connection? Networks in 10.4 have really changed alot!
