View 2 RepliesI am currently using ubuntu 10.10 and trying to install the current driver for a lexmark x2600 printer. I retrieved the driver from the lexmark site, to be specific the debian version. Once I had the driver unzipped I was able to run the program to start installing it. However the problem is that it requires root privileges in order to install. So I input my admin password to allow the install. Apparently the password I use is not correct even though it is the admin/root password on my system.

Unfortunately, it does not work; while the installation program claims to "install" the needed driver, all attempts (including local) to print using that ML-1710 printer & printer driver set fail.
It's noteworthy that I can print on the ML-1710 printer, over the network, from both windows and other Linux (Ubuntu) workstations.
need a root password to install a printer driver. I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 have used the usual sudo command in the terminal window BUT when I try to type in a new root password the text entry is locked , so can't type anything.

I also have a Canon LBP2900 printer which is compatible with Linux, and I can use it with the proprietary driver if connected directly to my computer. As the NAS doesn't have this proprietary driver, it doesn't detect the printer as such when plugged in. How can I install this driver on the NAS?

This rpm package construct was used in the Fedora distro.
Does it also work in openSUSE?
The only other construct given was for a deb package.
I looked in YasT for the driver but it was not there.
After struggling with a bad LP cable I have finally proven that the cable, printer and port all work. I booted in to another OS and was able to finally print. Now, I'm trying to get server 10.4 to recognize the printer and then I want to configure CUPs so I can run this machine as a headless print server, among other things.
Apache is running as I managed to get nagios to run and I can pull it up from another PC via a browser.
sshd is running as I'm logged in from another PC via ssh.
Problem number 1 is how do I install a driver for an NEC Superscript 870 printer? As it is lpstat returnes with :

Once I am able to print then I need to print to the server from other hosts on the network.
I have found that there are certain things on the web that I need to print, that simply refuse to work under linux. I have a samba printer server on one of my Slackware boxes and an M$ XP vm under Vbox that can access the server and see the printer. The only problem that I have is that it expects to download a driver from the server which isn't available and the HP driver installer won't install if it doesn't detect the printer. Short of relocating the printer to install the driver, does anyone know how to get the driver installed on the XP host? This is so much easier with my Slack boxes and CUPS!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed the HPLips printer driver for my HP Officejet Pro 8500 Printer.
The driver often stops printing on its own (HP Device Manager => "Printer Control" tab shows "stopped"). I guess it does so when it encounters a situation where it cannot print right on.
The problem: Users without root permission cannot restart printing, even when everything is o.k.. They have to call me in order to "start printer", because restarting it needs root access.
Does anyone know how to solve the problem: either setting the driver not to turn to "stopped" or permitting a restart by normal users?

When I tried to install hplip to enable hp printer driver, I understood that 9.04 is obsolete and no more support for it. I want to upgrade now. Update manager shows '10.04' for uogradation but it seems I cannot jump from 9.04 to 10.04 without getting into 9.10.

Computer: Dell AMD Server
Version: CentOS 5.3 x86_64 (net install) server
Primary Issue: There is no way to install a printer (seems as though CUPS is not installed) so System> Administration> and there is not Print or Printer option there
Secondary Issue: After figuring out the printer issue, I need to install Apache, and SQLite3
This is my first attempt with Yum and Fedora for that matter. I need to load a print driver and network driver for an MX860 printer. I downloaded the drivers and they are in the download folder. The problem is that I don't know what is the printer type that I have to select. None of the description really match for this printer. It is a printer which is directly connected to the network and *not* to a Linux or Windows machine. The only type that matches is AppSocket/HP JetDirect. I tried to cinfigure it with CUPS but it doesn't work. After I type the password nothing happens.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Centos 5.3 server with Samba file shares and a shared Samba printer. I am not running a domain.
I recently changed my windows desktop pc from an XP machine to a vista 64 machine... It has a different user name. Everything went pretty smoothly - and the and the vista machine found the smba printer - and even downloaded the driver from the samba server. he printer works OK - and the file shares are fine.
The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWe have a process whereby we used a rescuecd and partimage to take a snapshot image of one of our laptops, then we use it to lay down the snapshot on other laptops as requests for them come in. The image was created on an HP (Compaq) 8510, and has always worked laying it down on other 8510s.
So now we get a stack of HP Elitebook 8530s, which will be our new standard. So we're testing how laying down the old 8510 image will work laying it down on the new 8530s. As far as putting down the filesystem image, all looks great. However, we'reseeing the msg "bringing up interface eth0: e1000 device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization." Which I believe is his way of telling me "sorry, whatever driver you've given me can't drive this ethernet card." And needless to say, ifconfig -a doesn't even show anything on eth0.
I'm thinking (hoping) that if we get and install the proper driver to drive the ethernet adapter that's onboard the 8530, we can get this guy some network connectivity, at which point the rest of the tweaks we need to make should be comparatively easy.
how to get the proper driver and b) how to install it? Keep in mind this machine has no connectivity, so I'll have to sneakernet it over from my laptop to the machine.
My Operating system is Ubuntu 10-4 that I have just installed.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIm trying to add the binary NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.14-pkg1.run in my CentOS 5.4 ks.cfg file. The problem is that when you manually run the program it asks you questions and you have to respond with ok if you agree to their licensing terms. I want to be able to include this binary in my kickstart so when my machine boots up for the first time this driver is already installed and I don't have to waste time troubleshooting video issues. Is there anyway I can do this?
