Ubuntu :: Cannot Install / Upgrade Anything Because Of Printer Driver
Feb 11, 2010
I installed printer drivers from a deb package and now I can't install/update anything!! I get this error:
jordan@jordan-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install gtk-recordmydesktop
[sudo] password for jordan:
Sorry, try again.
[sudo] password for jordan:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
gtk-recordmydesktop: Depends: recordmydesktop (>= 0.3. but it is not going to be installed
pstocanonbj: Depends: libcupsys2 (>= 1.2.3)
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
Why is this 1 error tying up the entire install system?

I am currently using ubuntu 10.10 and trying to install the current driver for a lexmark x2600 printer. I retrieved the driver from the lexmark site, to be specific the debian version. Once I had the driver unzipped I was able to run the program to start installing it. However the problem is that it requires root privileges in order to install. So I input my admin password to allow the install. Apparently the password I use is not correct even though it is the admin/root password on my system.

How can I install Samsung's ML-1710 printer driver? I've already tried using Samsung's "Unified Linux Driver" from their website. Unfortunately, it does not work; while the installation program claims to "install" the needed driver, all attempts (including local) to print using that ML-1710 printer & printer driver set fail.
It's noteworthy that I can print on the ML-1710 printer, over the network, from both windows and other Linux (Ubuntu) workstations.

I have a Synology DS110+ NAS which has print server feature. It is powered with a lightweight Linux version. I also have a Canon LBP2900 printer which is compatible with Linux, and I can use it with the proprietary driver if connected directly to my computer. As the NAS doesn't have this proprietary driver, it doesn't detect the printer as such when plugged in. How can I install this driver on the NAS?

After struggling with a bad LP cable I have finally proven that the cable, printer and port all work. I booted in to another OS and was able to finally print. Now, I'm trying to get server 10.4 to recognize the printer and then I want to configure CUPs so I can run this machine as a headless print server, among other things.
Apache is running as I managed to get nagios to run and I can pull it up from another PC via a browser.
sshd is running as I'm logged in from another PC via ssh.
Problem number 1 is how do I install a driver for an NEC Superscript 870 printer? As it is lpstat returnes with :
karl@zeus:/etc/cups$ lpstat -t
scheduler is not running
no system default destination
Once I am able to print then I need to print to the server from other hosts on the network.

I need to install the driver and I downloaded the Canon install package. The instructions read:
# rpm -ivh [file name of common module for CUPS drivers]
This rpm package construct was used in the Fedora distro.
Does it also work in openSUSE?
The only other construct given was for a deb package.
I looked in YasT for the driver but it was not there.

I have found that there are certain things on the web that I need to print, that simply refuse to work under linux. I have a samba printer server on one of my Slackware boxes and an M$ XP vm under Vbox that can access the server and see the printer. The only problem that I have is that it expects to download a driver from the server which isn't available and the HP driver installer won't install if it doesn't detect the printer. Short of relocating the printer to install the driver, does anyone know how to get the driver installed on the XP host? This is so much easier with my Slack boxes and CUPS!

I installed the HPLips printer driver for my HP Officejet Pro 8500 Printer.
The driver often stops printing on its own (HP Device Manager => "Printer Control" tab shows "stopped"). I guess it does so when it encounters a situation where it cannot print right on.
The problem: Users without root permission cannot restart printing, even when everything is o.k.. They have to call me in order to "start printer", because restarting it needs root access.
Does anyone know how to solve the problem: either setting the driver not to turn to "stopped" or permitting a restart by normal users?

This is my first attempt with Yum and Fedora for that matter. I need to load a print driver and network driver for an MX860 printer. I downloaded the drivers and they are in the download folder. When I try to install I get what is below. How do I resolve? Do I need to identify where the driver is? If so, how?

I've been running OpenSuSE 11.2 for some time now; my system is a Dell 64-bit with an ATI 46xx graphics card and I've used the proprietary ATI driver without difficulty, as the driver provided with OpenSuSE was pretty much unusable. I'm considering upgrading to v11.3, but there seem to be scattered horror stories involving ATI cards, particularly when it comes to ATI's proprietary driver.

This post is for an HP parallel printer but I think it should work for at least "some" other parallel printers.I am sure that someone smarter than me will follow up this post with a "well, just do this and that" and you will have your HP Laserjet 6P printer ready to go, but since questions litter the forums of MANY distros on how to get "at least" an HP parallel printer to work, I'll post this anyway. This may or may not work for you if you do not have an HP but you can try it.The install printer box will let you do an install for an HP Parallel and it asks for how it is to talk to it, through CUPS sock or "local host'. When we get through what I recommend you should chose "local host".

I did an upgrade of Nvidia(Latest version v.196) and KDE-base4 to KDE 4.4.4(I think) in Yast2. Now when I reboot the X doesnt start. I claim it can't find any nvidia-module. I thing the upgrade of Nvidia v.196 failed, so I need to know how to reinstall Nvidia in console(CLI). It only boot up in cli. I thought it is so simple to just download the latest driver and install in CLI, but my NetworkManager doesnt start eighter so I don't have any network.
OpenSUSE 11.2 64bits
KDE 4.4.x
Nvidia NV140 Quadro 512MB
I guess my mistake was to upgrade both KDE and Nvidia in the same operation.

I am fairly new to ubuntu having just dumped my winxp and put ubuntu 9.10 desktop on my Dell Inspiron 6400.I thought most things were not too bad. A few challenges, lots of things to learn. I have wine installed for some windows programmes I need and I am running winxp under virtualbox for some other things that are too hard under ubuntu.
But the biggest challenge so far has been printing. One of the printers I print to is a Toshiba estudio 232 photocopier and I need to do some fairly complex printing to it - one of the more complex being booklet printing. The windows printer drivers for the Toshiba have a swathe of configurable items that make it all work reasonably well and the driver is a snack to install.
But the dramas I have had trying to get it running under ubuntu have been taxing. After a lot of mucking around I finally managed to get ubuntu to use a Toshiba ppd instead of the generic one (I hope I am using the correct terminology) and I finally have access to some options. Not anywhere near the number of options under windows and in a far, far less friendly format but some progress at least. However not enough progress for the printing needs I have so I still have to use winxp under virtualbox to print the documents.Has anyone else experienced these dramas and is there any good answers?

I'm using Epson TX110 printer at the moment, it contains both scanner and printer.
I've installed Epson TX109 driver on Ubuntu, and it prints fine.
The problem is, how do I get the scanner to work? In the previous Windows, there's a program that allows you to scan and edit files, can I do it here too?

Since my windows HDD died, I have been permanently on ubuntu but i never got my printer set up. Its a friday night and now ive got some time on my hands! Ive found the drivers for my printer (Cannon MP 210) but i have no idea what to do with the files. The file for the scanner is a .tgz file, and the printer driver is a .tar file. When i connected my printer a few minutes ago, ubuntu 10.10 brought me to the installation and i installed and older printers driver (mp 180) but the scanner wont work and a bit of excess ink is on the test paper.
