Slackware :: Install Banshee - Gconf-sharp-2.0 For Slack
Feb 5, 2010I am running the latest slackware and have for a while been trying to install banshee. So... I also installed gnome and that seems to work. I have added dependency after dependency... and now I am finally stuck. I have searched the web for gconf-sharp-2.0. i might be blind, but i have not found anywhere that i can download it from and install.

Jun 6, 2010I've been using linux for several years now, and given that I get banshee running I can completely do away with Micro$ux . But here is where I've run into a bit of a problem. Obviously since I'm running slackware I know that the package manager will not have every program I want. I also know that when I build a package from source there will be some dependencies I do not have, and I need to adapt and overcome. I've been working away at the dependencies for a couple hours, and one is killing me "taglib-sharp 2.0.3.7".
I downloaded that exact package (as it is the newest version) and installed from source (simple "./configure && make && make install"). Worked just fine, seemed to have installed with no errors during make and no missing dependencies during config. That would lead me to believe it installed, however the configure script for banshee is still complaining that it can't find any taglib-sharp at all. So I redownloaded the source and tried again to no avail. Below is the exact output of the banshee config (though it's just as you'd expect).

CentOS 5 :: Can't Install Printer On 5.3
Aug 8, 2009I did a net install for 5.3 x86_64 and for some reason it seems as though I don't have CUPS installed.
Computer: Dell AMD Server
Version: CentOS 5.3 x86_64 (net install) server
Primary Issue: There is no way to install a printer (seems as though CUPS is not installed) so System> Administration> and there is not Print or Printer option there
Secondary Issue: After figuring out the printer issue, I need to install Apache, and SQLite3

The problem is that I don't know what is the printer type that I have to select. None of the description really match for this printer. It is a printer which is directly connected to the network and *not* to a Linux or Windows machine. The only type that matches is AppSocket/HP JetDirect. I tried to cinfigure it with CUPS but it doesn't work. After I type the password nothing happens.

Ofcourse My printer model is not showing up on the list of printer list when using ipp based configuration.
so while searching around, I came across article to install hplip at

and I tried to install the following hplip version with centos.

Running the configure with following arguments

I get following error
configure: error: cannot find net-snmp support (or --disable-network-build)
But net-snmp is installed on my system, so, I tried with disable-network-build and tried to get around the problem, the next error I get is

CentOS 5 Server :: Super Slow Windows Printer Properties Dialogue With Samba Printer
Sep 18, 2009I have a Centos 5.3 server with Samba file shares and a shared Samba printer. I am not running a domain.
I recently changed my windows desktop pc from an XP machine to a vista 64 machine... It has a different user name. Everything went pretty smoothly - and the and the vista machine found the smba printer - and even downloaded the driver from the samba server. he printer works OK - and the file shares are fine.
The only thing which is quite odd - is that the Printer Properties dialogue takes more than 30 seconds to come up - and every action you attempt with the dialogue takes a similar amount of time.

May 9, 2011I've been running Ubuntu on one of my old notebooks (Acer Aspire 5516) for the past two years. My problem started when I tried to upgrade to 11.04 64 bit. The installation seemed to go fine, but when I restarted to finish, after I would log in all I would see is the background with no menus or anything. I tried doing a fresh install and seeing if that helped, but it didn't. I had to downgrade back to 10.10. Does anyone know if 11.04 works at all on the Acer Aspire 5516 or a similar model? Even at 32 bit?

Sep 8, 2009I'm having great difficulty with networking on a new Acer 5516 laptop (smolt):Firstly, the NIC card isn't recognized out-of-the-box so I followed Ubuntu forum thread. No luck*
I installed the appropriate Broadcom drivers. No luck*
* However, when I plugged in a USB Ralink DWL-G122 wireless adapter, this worked and, incredibly, the internal Broadcom BCM4312 started to work (see below). Even more bizarre, after turning the laptop off and unplugging the power, upon reboot with the Ralink adapter plugged in, the NIC was on and I did a yum update through eth0.
Sadly, none of the laptops internal networking works unless the Ralink adapter is plugged in. In fact, the gnome desktop is almost unworkable and unresponsive without the Ralink adapter up. Further, I sure that this was the reason the initial F11 install was frustrating with periodic unresponsiveness.
I've tried installing both F11 386 and x64 and have booted with a F10 live USB with no luck either.
I'm contemplating trying Ubuntu next but really would like to know if someone has been successful with Fedora.

OpenSUSE :: 11.4 - Fonts Not Crystal Clear And Sharp In KDE
Mar 28, 2011I'm running openSUSE 11.4 in KDE and Gnome. To me it looks like Gnome has more or less correct font rendering. At least for what I can see the fonts look good. The problem is in KDE, I tried about every tutorial I could find to make the fonts look good but still it's not like it is shown in Windows. In windows the fonts are crystal clear and sharp. In KDE it looks like I'm working on a prehistoric system. Why do the fonts look really impressive during the installation of opensuse in Yast and ugly after the installation? Is there a way to make the font rendering in KDE look like Windows 7 or Vista?

I followed this:
1. I connected the HDMI cable to my laptop with the TV already on (my laptop was on too).
2. Went to NVIDIA X Server Settings, then to X Server Display Configuration and on the Display Tab I chose my TV (Samsung) as the "model", then configure it so that the TwinView mode was switched on, then I changed the resolution to 1920x1080, position: absolute and then I checked the box "Make this the primary display for the X server" (I guess this is what I was missing in the first place).
3. Clicked on Apply and then my TV started to show what I was doing on my laptop.
My computers reading the tv but when i click apply its still blank and i lose my mouse and boarders on my computer

When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?

Sep 21, 2010After seeing how good netflix movies looked over a wireless connection I decided to pull out an old desktop to see if I could up a basic media player . I loaded Ubuntu 10.4 and was impressed how fast and clean the computer ran. I also downloaded the latest version of boxee. I was disappointed with the quality of video; video was not very sharp, there were square blocks(pixelated) in dark areas of the picture. At this point I am trying to decide if the poor quality is due to my video card, boxee, CPU or if I am expecting too much from web content. should I just a browser or VLC. Naturally I would like to spend little money and use what I have. If however my hardware is not salvageable for what I want to use it for, I would like to know. Any opinions?

Ubuntu :: Slow LPR Printing - Sharp AR M205 Connected To Network
Nov 4, 2010We are attempting to convert our entire office over to Linux, however we are experiencing some printing challenges. We have a Sharp-AR-M205 connected to our network that handles the bulk of our regular printing needs. Linux picks this up from the network and installs the driver (Sharp AR-M205 Foomatic/pxlmono (recommended)) without difficulty. We can print from gedit & OpenOffice without difficulties. The difficulty is when printing images, webpages with image content, or PDFs.
Then the printing spool goes into "LPR ..." printing mode and takes between 5-20 minutes to print a single page. This is particularly problematic as each week we put out a simple publication for our organization, designed in Scribus, outputted to PDF and sent to the printer from 200-300 copies. Our workaround has been to leave a workstation as an XP machine to print the PDF each week.

Jun 7, 2011I am attempting to connect a CentOS VMWare VM to a networked Brother HL5170DN printer. The printer is located at 192.168.0.101. It is available and I can connect to it with various Ubuntu and Windoze VMs.
I have searched for instructions on how to do this and it SEEMS rather simple. However, it does not work. Here is what I have done:
System; Administration; Printing to launch the printer configuration wizard
supply root password New Printer Provide printer name, description etc. Select Connection - LPD/LPR Host or Printer Hostname - 192.168.0.101 supply a printer name again select Brother HL5170DN BR-Scripts3 from the footmatic database complete creating the printer
The printer appears as a local printer, however, I cannot print a test page. Nothing happens when I click the button to print a test page. I can ping the printer by IP address. So I deleted the printer and tried again.
At the screen which asks for Hostname and Printername I entered the printer's IP address in Hostname as I had done before. I then clicked the Probe button. At this point Printer configuration freezes and I have to do a force quit.
I just tried the same thing on a physical CentOS 5.6 box - just in case the problem was a VMWare thing. Same symptoms. Probe freezes the Printer configuration program. I then recalled that the printer uses port 9100. I opened 9100 on the firewall (I think) but no improvement. I temporarily disabled the firewall and went throug the proces. I now have the printer defined at "socket://192.168.0.101:9100" and recognized as "Brother HL-5170DN BR-Script3"
I still cannot print a test page. I tried to print from gedit and it shows the printer with 1 job in the queue. The gedit print bumped that to 2 jobs in the "printing" state. Looks like I am communicating with the printer. Just not printing.
