CentOS 5 :: Can't Find HDD - Virgin System?

Nov 9, 2009

I am trying to install the latest release (5.4 64 bit) from DVD. I downloaded the torrent from here.My system is completely virgin - no OS has ever been installed on it. So I suppose somewhat fittingly, there is some resistance to my advances :).Details:Intel dual core 64 bit CPUASUS PK5KPL-AM main boardSATA HDDI am trying to boot from the DVD I burned from the downloaded ISO.

It boots up ok at first but when it comes to creating the partition it can't seem to find my HDD. I get the following error:An error has occurred - no valid devices were found on which to create new file systems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem. Can anyone please suggest a way to troubleshoot this? I realize the problem could be the hardware, but I would like to eliminate all other possibilities before taking the system back to the distributor for repair.

Is it possible to list/find/compare the program versions on a Centos system, against Redhat/Centos Errata/Security/Bug lists? Sort of looking for a way to make sure that all the packages on a system are ok, and not a security risk-- Without having to update every package. A pseudo code, in my mind is:

General :: Can Not Find System-logos For Centos 5 / Get That?

Mar 11, 2010

I have a Centos 5 machine, and I've been attempting to install GNOME and the like. However, quite a large number of packages do NOT install because of missing dependencies, all of which seem to trace back to 'system-logos'. Unfortunately, I can find no trace of this package in the 'yum list available' output. Google came up with nothing. If you can help, it would be MUCH appreciated! BTW, I've also tried 'fedora-logos' and 'linux-logos' without success.

CentOS 5 :: Parted - How To Find File System Type

Feb 18, 2010

When I run 'parted' and then type 'print' to see the partitions that are available, I see two entries: /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. /dev/sda1 is of ext3 type whereas for /dev/sda2 nothing is specified for file system type. The LVM flags are set for /dev/sda2.

When I tried to resize /dev/sda2, it gives me the error "File system type not recognized". let me know how to find out the file system type of the partition.

How can I find out (from terminal cmdline) the file system (ext2, ext3, reiserfs,...) of this hard disc?

From Ubuntu I know the two commands:

or
sudo fdisk -l

What are the corresponding cmds in CentOS?

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To Virgin Broadband

So should I try enableing other Authentication Methods, or could it be a hardware or some other problem?

General :: Virgin Install On Old 120MHz Laptop?

Jun 25, 2010

I'm trying to get any Linux on my Compaq LTE 5200. The problem is that it dose not have a floppy, and will not boot from CD or Network. The distros I'm working with; Damn Small Linux, DSL-Not, Spri, Puppy, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu -mini, U-Lite, Watt, Crunch Bang (Lite), or DeLi.

I have a few other laptops that I can work with the HDD, and USB-HDD dongle. However, whenever I put the HDD back into the LTE 5200, I get all sorts of errors LiLo 99, GRUB 17, 2, 18.

How can I install on system {A}, to work on {B}? Is there a way to dd if=bootdisk.img of=/dev/hda1 so that it will boot? Other ideas? P.S. Not quite a "n00b", but did not know where to place this question.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: 11.2 Virgin Broadband Can't Connect To Internet?

Apr 27, 2010

I have just recently installed Open SUSE 11.2 from a CD I got from a Linux Magazine.Installed this fine as a dual-boot machine on my HP laptop. To access the Internet, I have normally used 2 ways:1. WIFI Connection via my home desktopUsing Netgear WG111v3 USB Adapter.2. Virgin Broadband USB Mobile Broadband stickI have no problem connecting this via my Windows Vista operating system.Somehow, under Open SUSE 11.2, this is a problem. 2. Virgin Broadband - I managed to get the Virgin Broadband icon of a mobile phone saying that it's connected and "Active" by keying in the number "*99#", username/password as blank and APN as VirginBroadband". However, when I launch Firefox browser, I couldn't get to any external Website even though the icon for the Virgin Broadband says that it's Active and connected.

So what's the problem ?1. WIFI Connectivity to Home Desktop WIFI - with this I have never never got any connection at all. It kept saying "Activating" and I have set up the connection and entered the WEP 128-bit paraphrase hex digits. I managed to scan and got the correct SSID and as I know they belong to my desktopI read somewhere that Netgear WG111v3 is not compatible with Open Suse 11.2 and will need to install the driver for this. So I did obtain the .INF file and installed ndiswrapper -i with the .inf file.. However, still not successful.I'm thinking of buying a Belkin USB Adapter which is in the list of compatible USB WIFI Adapter for Open Suse 11.2 - .. the 802.11g chipset.. as I couldn't get this to work

Ubuntu Networking :: One Touch X200S Virgin Mobile Broadband Apocalypse?

Apr 11, 2010

I can't get my sister new computer (she needs for work) to work with her mobile broadband dongle (details at bottom of post). The light on the dongle flashes green when plugged in, it recognises the connection in mobile broadband network connections, but won't connect (i checked connect automatically, it doesn't come up as an option in the top panel network thingy either.

Googled a solution that works for other people, not for me. The solution is for ubuntu 8.[URL].. I've been using Ubuntu for a year or so but not that experienced in fixing problems. The wifi and screen brightness settings are't working either but that isn't really a problem, assume it will get fixed in an update soon.

CentOS 5 :: Centos 5.2 Installed On /dev/hda3, Won't Boot, Cant Find Grub Stage 2?

Nov 10, 2009

I just upgraded by box from Fedora Core 9 to Centos 5.2. Finally!I have a 500GB SATA drive, it's partitioned into three equal size slices, hda1 through 3. The old Fedora was on hda1, I installed the new Centos on hda3. I instructed the installer to write the MBR to /dev/hda, not /dev/hda3. Fdisk says I have sector 0 unused.First, the system wouldn't boot - it just looped through the BIOS, rebooting over and over again. The BIOS sees the disk, but it never loaded Grub. I tried re-running grub-install /dev/hda, and not I get a Grub Error 17 after stage 1.5 loads.

I can boot from rescue OK, the grub.conf man menu.lst look fine, it's pointing to "root (hd0,2)". It's either the BIOS that can't find the MBR, or the MBR can't find Grub. When I looked at the disk with fdisk after the install, hda1 was still marked bootable, hda3 was not, so I swapped bootable flags but that has not made a difference. I also appended the new grub to the old grub thinking I could get the MBR (if it is there) to load the old grub and thence find the new Centos, but that didn't work either.Mobo is an old Shuttle AK35.Any ideas? Did I mess up by not telling the system to put the MBR on /dev/hda3? Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling?

CentOS 5 :: Running A CentOS 5.5 System Which Does NOT Support VT Technology

Jun 3, 2010

I am running a CentOS 5.5 system which does NOT support VT Technology, so I am unable to use Xen HV. I am very happy with OpenVZ other than the fact that it doesn't support Windows, only Linux.I'd like to have VMWare Server 2.x installed, but it appears that OpenVZ changes the Kernel to, in my case, 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6. The default kernel on my system is 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386.If I change grub to load 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386, VMWare will work but OpenVZ will not. If I change grub to load 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6, OpenVZ will work, but VMWare will not.If I try to run /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl while in the 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.028stab069.6 kernel, I get an error of:

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)?Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/ src/ linux/ include]I'm so lost as what to do now..is there anyway I can compile both of the kernels together somehow?
