I am trying to get the wireless enabled in my laptop. Following is the dmesg log I get:

I just upgraded by box from Fedora Core 9 to Centos 5.2. Finally!I have a 500GB SATA drive, it's partitioned into three equal size slices, hda1 through 3. The old Fedora was on hda1, I installed the new Centos on hda3. I instructed the installer to write the MBR to /dev/hda, not /dev/hda3. Fdisk says I have sector 0 unused.First, the system wouldn't boot - it just looped through the BIOS, rebooting over and over again. The BIOS sees the disk, but it never loaded Grub. I tried re-running grub-install /dev/hda, and not I get a Grub Error 17 after stage 1.5 loads.
I can boot from rescue OK, the grub.conf man menu.lst look fine, it's pointing to "root (hd0,2)". It's either the BIOS that can't find the MBR, or the MBR can't find Grub.When I looked at the disk with fdisk after the install, hda1 was still marked bootable, hda3 was not, so I swapped bootable flags but that has not made a difference. I also appended the new grub to the old grub thinking I could get the MBR (if it is there) to load the old grub and thence find the new Centos, but that didn't work either.Mobo is an old Shuttle AK35.Any ideas? Did I mess up by not telling the system to put the MBR on /dev/hda3? Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've installed CentOS 5.3 on a machine, and I need a Samba version 3.2 or higher. Since 3.4 is out, I thought I'd grab that. But, "yum list|grep samba" gives me only version 3.0.33. Is there a package of Samba I can grab that will upgrade the 3.0 installation so that I don't have two laying around? If not and I need to compile from source, do you have any suggestions for what arguments I should give configure? I'm not used to Linux coming from the BSD world

Now that I have the installation completed, I find that I really love it. The one issue is the inability to connect to our household network.
When I check for wireless networks I see that "firmware not installed".
I've installed the CentOS 5.1 from a CD only yesterday and everything is working fine except Mysql that came from the CD distribution. I have detected that my system has mysql.

[root@onion /]# find . -name mysql
./usr/bin/mysql
./usr/share/mysql
./usr/lib/mysql
However I'm unable to find mysqld, safe_mysqld or mysql_install_db in my filesysytem.

i am sort of a n00b at *nix, and i wanted to install KSB26 on my centos 5.3 install.I downloaded the file. and extracted it.I modified the install.sh in the file to point to /usr/src/kernels/.I run the installation, but it shows many errors telling me to run make oldconfig and make prepare on the src.I run that but i still get the same error and installtion does not occur.Do i need any special packages installed?

The install actually seemed to go pretty smoothlyIt's a dell pentium4 with 128mbyes it installed textuallyI start the gui with 'startx'but the question I have is for the more experienced CentOS people.when I login as rootI am trying to figure out how to get my machine onto the internet.I had figured the OS would have NO problem with a Linksys 10/100 pci cardsince the OS has the latest drivers and all.The system reports the NIC as a "ADMtek NC100 ethernet" card (eth0)it also reports that the status is "ok"Now, I've seen the NIC when it's plugged into a hub (during the O/S install)and it DOES make the hub's light flicker when it tries to "talk" to it.but when I have it plugged into my Cable Modem (for internet) it's not doing anything.
During the install I SAW the NIC making the hub lights flicker... so I know the interface WAS doing "something".but nowwhen I go into the gui and I try the NetWork Admin , and I try to "activate" the card.Nothing.Am I NOT doing something that I SHOULD be doing?fconfig? (at the command line?) ifup? I would have thought I'd "activate" it with the gui ok...I'll keep poking around.I'm just a little surprised is all. I've been using Linux for about 2 years now, mostly Ubuntu & derivatives, but I've also tried Fedora, Mandriva, and others. I wanted to give CentOS a try because I'm very interested in going for a Linux+ or similar certification, and so I'm looking to start learning how to configure & maintain Linux servers and so on. I have a friend who's a Linux sysadmin, and he recommended CentOS as a good learning tool.
Anyway, I've only got a wireless connection in my office at home (the actual cable modem is downstairs) so I intentionally chose a wireless adapter that would work with Linux -- it has a Realtek RLT8187 chip, for which there is support built into the kernel, or so I've read. It has worked out of the box in just about every distro I've tried, and indeed it worked OOTB when I tried out the CentOS 5.5 live CD.
However, when I actually installed the CentOS to my hard drive it no longer worked -- I have only a greyed out option for a wired connection (presumably since my motherboard has an ethernet adapter, but there is no connection). Why the wireless would work in the live session but not after install? Is there a firmware file or something I need to track down? I did look on this page, but it doesn't mention anything about RTL8187.
Where can I find a bunch of GDM theme RPM's for CentOS 5.4? All my efforts at Googling only results in Ubuntu (.deb) themes.

View 5 Replies View RelatedSince my Asus WL-3300 seems to be having trouble, I bought a USB adapter -- a Linksys WUSB54G ver 4. Version 4 was apparently important because it came with a Ralink 2570 chip -- and that's supposed to work with Linux (which is why I chose it).I think it will work because, without loading any drivers, Net Manager can see the local routers (about seven of them). But when I choose mine, though it asks for a WEP key, it never connects. I'm not sure now what driver is loading that *almost* works with it. But I think I may still need to load the driver from: URl...But when you read the page it says that the driver has entered the "Mainline Kernel" -- and I'm wondering if that is why the adaptor almost works.So the questions:
1) Without a driver, should this Ralink 2570 be working at all?
2) How do I find what driver *is* loading?
3) Modprobe doesn't seem to be able to find any rt25x00 module, is this right -- or is there some other name I should be looking for?
iwlink scan, ifconfig, etc., all see the adapter as wlan0.lsusb shows the adapter.I'm going to keep searching, but wrote this in case there is something really simple that I'm overlooking.

I am setting it up as a web server but haven't bothered to move the domain from my current registrar to the server as there are a lot of things I need to get done before that. I am having a problem where I couldn't install httpd. So i tried some of the basic fixes i knew as far as yum clean all and checking that my /etc/resolv.conf was ok. I have the two nameservers I am using listed there but I have no hostname set because I simply dont have the domain transferred or anything like that yet. Is that the reason I am having these issues. I installed the system with a network install fine about a month ago so im not sure why I am having problems now.When i try to ping centos.org I get an unknown host www.centos.org error. I tried changing the resolv.conf to have localhost as the hostname and I still have the same issues. I havent made any changes to anything that would potentially cause this.
My etc/resolv.conf looks like this:

Also it seems the problem may have got worse after yum clean-all because before that when I would try 'yum install httpd' it would show the files and filesizes and ask to install, when I would select yes It would give an error showing it could not find the fastestmirror. Now it doesn't give any file size or files or an option to approve the install. It just responds with an error saying it could not retrieve mirrorlist

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to find a driver for my wireless card (Atheros AR928X) and I think it's ath9k what I need. As far as I know there isn't a linux driver for it, so I installed ndiswrapper to use a windows driver instead. The problem is that when I type modprobe ndiswrapper I get "bash: modprobe: command not found" (even as root). I know I'm missing something about modprobe, but I can't find any help on google. Anyway, I installed ndisgtk next, because I thought it would be easier, but when I go to System> Administration> Windows Wireless Drivers I get a message "Unknown error".Do you have any ideas on how I'll make ndiswrapper work?

I contacted DELL to provide me the driver and they said that they do not support Linux on netbook and I have to arrange it myself.
I told them that I don't need help in installing I just need the driver file to which they said that they don't have driver for Linux.
NIC is getting detected and works fine on the same netbook (Am dual booting Windows7/CentOS) with Windows7
When I type: ls -l /dev/ it does not show up eth0. Same result with ifconfig. When I type lspci | grep net it does show up something like Atheros Communications AR8132 L1 PCI Gigabit .
I just started setting up a linux box in the office...I have some experience with ssh commands but not setting up a linux system and stuff.The box is connected to our network but I have no clue how to make windows & osx talk with it. How can I go by doing that and also setting up an apache server to be able to connect through network. Right now I have apache/linux/mysql running it works when i go to localhost, but I would also like to let all the computers in office to access it. I would guess that will deal with virtual host which I know how to setup. I just need to setup an IP.
View 19 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an Acer Travelmate 290E computer. The installation went fine and everything was up and running until I wanted to use the wireless.
1. I got the "firmware not installed message" and installed the Broadcom b43 firmware.
2. I receive a new message: " wireless is disabled by hardware switch" (My acer does have a wireless switch that is switched to on.
3. After hours of research I tried to install Acer ACPI but my laptop model is not supported. I assume Ubuntu knows my wireless is there but thinks it is turned off, and the wireless switch can't communicate to Ubuntu properly.
I have already tried rfkill and all that good stuff. Doesn't work for me, Wireless is still hard blocked.
I'm running a fresh install on an intel i7 system on an asus p6t deluxe v2 motherboard with the onboard NIC (Marvell Technology pci-e). I have a Centos 5.2 VM running under Windows 2008 Hyper-V. If I add two "legacy Nic's" and bridge them, everything appears to work fine. However, if I remove the legacy nics and replace them with two synthetic nics (linux integration components), the nics seems to function fine UNTIL I add them to a bridge.This VM will eventually be used as a DansGuardian/Squid transparent proxy for a local library. The logical layout is represented by the attached jpg image. I have also included the ifcfg- scripts for the adapters and bridge for both scenarios.It would also be useful if someone else has Hyper-V with the integration components and dual physical nics to see if they can reproduce my symptoms on their box.Legacy Adapters:

I've the Intel Corporation 82801CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM) Ethernet Controller also a wireless slot (I've the wireless card DWL-G650+) When I turn on the pc and I go to "Ethernet Device", I see set: peth0 (Intel Corporation 82801CAM (ICH3) PRO/100 VE (LOM) ETHERNET CONTROLLER) and also set "Bind to MAC address": fe:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff I've set manually the IP address (I'm under router). Status is "Active" but can't go on the Net. When I change to "eth0 (Intel EtherExpress/100 driver)...sometimes become "Active" an other times said that the MAC address is different or to check the cable because can't find the IP. What can I do?
